My senior project research paper
What Its All About
For my senior project I knew I wanted to do something involving cooking but I
wasnt sure what to do at first. The first thing that came to my mind was creating a
cookbook with a bunch of healthy recipes to somehow tie it in to dance. Then I decided
that I was going to minor in dance so my project didnt have to involve dance somehow.
Then it hit my why dont I teach a cooking class. So that is exactly what I am going to do,
I am going to create and teach a cooking class that is once a week for four weeks.
In order to make my project run smoothly I am going to research a few things.
The first and most important thing that I am going to research for me is how to get rid of
my fear of public speaking. I dont want to get up in front of my class and freeze and
have everyone staring at me wondering what they are supposed to be doing. Then I am
going to research the different learning styles to see how to incorporate each. After that I
will research the best advertisement methods to see how to get people to come to my
class, so that I will have a class to teach. Then I will research how to work with kids and
teens since that is the people who I am hoping will come to my class so I know how to
work with them and not get aggravated with them for doing something stupid. Finally I
am going to research the benefits of cooking so that I and the people in my class will
have the knowledge of why learning to cook is important.

Mattera 2
The Know How
Public speaking is the most common fear of mankind. We all know we will have
to speak eventually but we still panic when we know we have to speak publicly. So we
try to either avoid it at all costs or do it and stubble through it and do an okay job (David
Carbonell). Many people have something that they want to say but are too afraid to share
it and are stuck with a match or fear and a burning desire to speak their minds (Sam
Harris).
Public speaking is known to be people in Americas biggest fear even bigger then
dying (Amber N. Finn). Speaking in front of people has become an Extreme selfconsciousness that talking starts to feel like a sharp pain that wont go away until you can
sit down and not have anyone look at you. You start to feel like a ghost is wearing your
face as a mask and you are about to be a crazy implosion (Sam Harris). Researchers have
found that there are two ways that people react to in fear of public speaking. Some people
just get anxious and nervous others just get freaked out and have a panic attack and they
believe that it is biological (Amber N. Finn).
You could probably get away your whole life without doing public speaking but it
would probably make your life glum and limit the things you could do in life. If you
admit you have a problem and learn to overcome your fear your life will turn out much
better (Sam Harris).Once speaking in public becomes an emotional trigger future
situations may end badly and people will avoid speaking in public totally (). Agreeing to
speak when you are asked and accepting your fear will make your life easier. All you
have to do is prepare something to say and practice it until it becomes a second nature to
you so when you get nervous the information will be there in your mind (Sam Harris).

Mattera 3
The trick is that you have to commit to what they are saying and focus on the material.
Dont rush through it because that causes you to talk fast which makes you take small
breaths that makes your fear greater (David Carbonell).
There are three main types of learning styles; visual, auditory, and kinesthetic
learners. Visual leaners learn things best by seeing the information, auditory learners
learn best by hearing the information, and kinesthetic learners learn best by doing (Types
of learning styles). Knowing what you learning style is important to a successful learning
experience. By knowing your style you can be sure of yourself and in your skills to learn
(Using your learning styles)
When teaching a visual learner you have to notice when they stop paying
attention and start drawing a picture. So have them draw about what they are learning, so
they will understand what to do (Gina Conroy). Some useful ways to have them retain
information would be to have them make flashcards, have them do word puzzles, draw
and Watch videos of what they are learning (Claudia Pesce). Having the visual learning
students picture things in their minds or looking at things in a different way may help
them understand information better. Most visual learners are very precise and have to see
what to do to fully understand what to do (Gina Conroy).
Auditory learners learn by listening, they understand information more on the way
it sounds. They have an easier time comprehending instructions when you say it out loud
instead of writing them down, and understand things better when they are read out loud
so they can hear it (Whats your learning style? ). Some auditory learners do really well
when working with music or rhymes to remember the information, others need repetition

Mattera 4
to remember. Auditory learners love group discussions and have to ask question or talk
though the problems they are having understanding (Gina Conroy).
Kinesthetic learning was created from creativity and they have to learn through
doing. Kinesthetic learners need to move and be active in order to really learn, they cant
sit still they have to be doing something (What are the best kinesthetic learning
strategies?). These learners have to grip concepts, stay connected to what is happening,
follow their instincts, and just keep moving in order to learn. These learners need to be
directed to do something when there is nothing to do so that they dont become a
distraction (Gina Conroy).
Some ways of teaching are not good for a classroom they can be not very
effective and damaging to the students. Round Robin or popcorn reading doesnt help
students comprehension and can be embarrassing if you say something wrong (Jennifer
Gonzalez).

Sometimes a less taught is not a lesson learned, just because a teacher taught it

doesnt mean everyone understood what just happen and move on (Saga Briggs).
Promoting an event is like gardening you start with seeds of an idea and if you
dont fertilize with promotion it will die. One thing that is very important is a logo
combined with lots of amazing pictures to grab peoples attention. You also need to look
everywhere so that people will want to come (Kerri King). One thing that should be done
is send out a pre event email, with a subject line that will draw people to come (Andy
Crestodina). You have to use social media to promote, but dont get overwhelmed by
them. Being on a few social medias that are up to date is better than having all of them
with very little current information (Kerri King).

Mattera 5
The best places to advertise is everywhere create a flyer and put it up but make
sure you start 2 weeks before your event to give people a heads up. Word of mouth is also
a great way to advertise but dont be annoying about it (15 useful event promoting
tips).Find an organization to support your event so it looks better and may get more
people to come (Five Tips for Low-Budget Event Promotion). There are some dos and
donts to keep in mind like Do; always be polite while advertising and drink lots of coffee
to keep yourself together. Dont only advertise on social media or be so annoying while
advertising in person that people will want to punch you (15 useful event promoting tips).
Some of the advantages of having kids cook is that they get a sense of
accomplishment and are less likely to become picky eaters. By making cooking fun for
them they may not look at chores as something they are forces to do but more as
something fun (Brad Lowry). When they cook with the parents they will be exploring
their senses and not even know it (Mary L. Gavin). With kids helping in the kitchen they
will be learning skills they didnt know yet like reading a recipe or calculating how much
flour to use (Brad Lowry). Safety is important to remember while kids are cooking with
you in the kitchen. To prevent kids from getting hurt have them do really easy things like
adding ingredients or turning a page in a cookbook (Mary L. Gavin). A good idea to
remind kids of the safety precautions is to put up a checklist of things to do to protect
them (Brad Lowry).
There are many reasons why you should learn to cook one of them is to get to
know your kitchen, some people really only know how to reheat our food in the
microwave and then consume our food (5 Benefits of Enrolling in Cooking Classes).
While life may be hectic learning to cook could create family time and a moment of piece

Mattera 6
for yourself (Marye Audet). Learning how to cook could make you feel empowered and
believe in yourself which could improve your life (5 Benefits of Enrolling in Cooking
Classes). Cooking is a lot of things but the biggest thing is fun and creative you explore
your creativity and have a blast at the same time and it makes other people happy too if
they get to eat your delicious food (5 Reasons Baking is Good for Mental Health).
Putting it to Work
I have now researched how to get rid of my fear of public speaking, then I
researched the different learning styles and how to work with them, all about advertising,
working with kids and the benefits from cooking. So now I am going to overcome my
fear of public speaking so I will be able to talk in front of my class, answer questions and
actually teach my class. With my knowledge of all the learning styles I will now know
how to teach every type of learner that I will encounter. I know the best ways to advertise
my project and get people to come. I know that if I get kids in my class I will know how
to handle them. I will make sure that my class knows all the benefits from cooking and
has fun doing it.
