Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service

FAQ

1 Overview
What is the Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service ?
Answer: The Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service simplifies clustered Data ONTAP configuration
and data migration for customers transitioning from NetApp Data ONTAP 7-Mode to clustered Data
ONTAP. This service also supports data migration from non NetApp storage to clustered NetApp Data
ONTAP. The service provides an architecture review, strategy, Data ONTAP configuration and data
migration, testing and verification while retaining storage efficiencies and snapshots.
All protocols, including SAN and NAS are supported.

A Custom Firm Fixed Price (CFFP) option is available to prospects that do not meet the criteria
for a Firm-Fixed Price (FFP) package, including those that require over 20TB of data to be
migrated.
FFP Migration Service Package
o Up to 20TB of data will be migrated
Part Number: PS-FFP-MIGRATE-CMR-Zx (Restricted)

Are NetApp installation (rack and stack) services included with this offering, or are they
purchased and performed separately?
Answer: They are not included. The installation service delivery must be completed before this service is
performed and are additional items to be added on the hardware order.
What customer problem does this service address?
Answer: This service addresses the following areas:

The customers lack of experience and mentoring in clustered storage configuration and data
migration

Optimal use of product features

The ability to perform a minimally disruptive data migration

Avoid possible loss of mission-critical data during the data migration

Working with IT staff in managing major infrastructure change

What is different about migrating to clustered Data ONTAP compared to previous upgrades from
NetApp to NetApp?
Answer: There are three key differences:

Clustered Data ONTAP has a different architecture from Data ONTAP 7-Mode. Because of this,
there is no in-place upgrade available without the use of swing gear. Existing systems must go
through a data migration step to gain the advantages of clustered Data ONTAP.

Clustered Data ONTAP and Data ONTAP 7-Mode do not have feature parity. Depending on the
customers existing workloads and feature use, migration of certain datasets can be complex and

Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service

FAQ

might require a redesign of the customers storage architecture or might not be possible at this
time.

Because data migration from Data ONTAP 7-Mode to clustered Data ONTAP can be complex,
some data migration quotes have been higher than anticipated. This new service offering
addresses this issue with aggressive pricing and a fixed price package.

Who can sell this service?

Answer: Both NetApp direct and partners can sell this service. NetApp partners must engage a NetApp
Solution Principal (SP), Engagement Manager (EM) or their equivalent for quoting. It is also a best
practice and highly recommended for NetApp Sales to engage a NetApp Solution Principal, Engagement
Manager, or their equivalent for quoting.
Who can deliver this service?
Answer: NetApp Professional Services only. Partners can leverage NetApp IP to create and deliver their
own branded services.
Note: NetApp partners/resellers who are clustered Data ONTAP qualified will perform their own transition
services on their own paper. Our SKUed CFFP and FFP service product lines will not be relevant to them.
What is the pricing of this service offering?
Answer: For detailed pricing information, go to the Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service Sales
Training Slides, which are in the Field Portal Binder.
Since Travel and Expenses (T&E) are not covered, how is this cost handled?
Answer: Use your Geos back office processes to account for T&E costs.
I have a large opportunity. We will need swing gear. How should I proceed?
Answer: The Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service FFP package does not provide swing gear.
Pursue this opportunity under the Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service Custom Firm-Fixed Price
(CFFP), where you can include swing gear costs in the terms and conditions and pricing of the CFFP
SOW.
What has been done to make the FFP package cost competitive?
Answer: A historical 7-Mode to 7-Mode migration analysis was used to come up with a baseline. After
comparing the two results, we determined an appropriate list price that both provided aggressive pricing
and maintained adequate margins. The Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service FFP offering is priced
to be comparable to traditional 7-Mode to 7-Mode data migration pricing.
What LoE is involved?
Answer: The Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service FFP package cannot be negotiated, therefore,
LoE is not negotiable with the customer. In cases in which negotiation is required, CFFP should be
quoted.
What is the target market for the Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service ?
Answer: There are two target markets as follows:
1. All NetApp DataONTAP 7-Mode customers. This included customers with systems sending
AutoSupport information to NetApp that are running Data ONTAP 7.3, which ranges from three to five
years old. These systems either are likely to be up for service renewal or are reaching the end of software
support. Customers can have up to 20TB of SAN and NAS data to migrate to clustered Data ONTAP.
Opportunities above 20TB can be quoted via a clustered Data ONTAP CFFP opportunity.

What are the services high-level sizing guidelines for SAN and NAS environments?
Answer: There are guidelines in the Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service Sales Training Slides.

Answer: The part number is PS-FFP-MIGRATE-CMR-Zx (Restricted)
What is the part number for the Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service CFFP?
Answer: The part number is PS-SOW-SOL-MIGRATE-CMR
Are there any restrictions to quoting the services part numbers?
Answer: Yes. The FFP package uses a restricted part number. Before ordering a Clustered Data ONTAP
Migration Service part number, the individual will need to be granted permission.
What is the NetApp direct and partner sales motion and ordering process for the Clustered Data
ONTAP Migration Service?
Answer: The Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service sales motion will leverage the new cDOT Solution
Check Process when and where available. Where it is not available, use the existing Cluster-Mode Expert
Team (CMET) process.
Reference your Geos current pricing process for Geo-specific zone part numbers and pricing.
Note: Partner sales must contact a NetApp SP/EM or equivalent before quoting the Clustered Data
ONTAP Migration Service offering.
For additional details on the sales engagement process, review the Clustered Data ONTAP Migration
Service: PS Sales Process
Are there prerequisites to performing a Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service sale?
Answer: Yes.
1. Before the service is sold, a thorough review of the environments suitability for migration must be
completed. We recommend using the Transition Advisor (TA) tools for this review.
2. NetApp Installation Services must have been purchased with the hardware, and the installation
service delivery must have been completed. To learn more about Installation Services, go to:
https://fieldportal.netapp.com/Core/DownloadDoc.aspx?documentID=93392&contentID=126667
3. All systems included as part of this service must be validated with the applicable NetApp
Interoperability Matrix Tool (IMT).

FAQ

Learn more about the Migrate Now! promotion at

https://fieldportal.netapp.com/modules/fieldportal/binders/content.aspx?contentid=157682
What is included in the promotion?
Answer: The promotion delivers the following NetApp Migration Services free for the first 20TB of data
and at a 35% list price discount thereafter. This is in addition to the inherent efficiency savings that come
with NetApps professional data migration services based on NetApps best practices.
Is it more expensive to migrate from Data ONTAP 7-Mode to clustered Data ONTAP than from 7Mode to EMC?
Answer: This is EMC fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD). Although EMC does have competitive
campaigns targeted against NetApp, their packaging smoke screen misleads customers into thinking they
are getting a deal from EMC on data migration services.
Understood. That said, Id like to know what Im up against. What is EMC up to these days?
Answer: EMC is aggressive and has a successful track record of selling complete solutions to its
customers, as well as targeting NetApp customers for takeouts.
The new Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service offering helps you to protect your accounts from an
EMC attack. This new offering has been priced aggressively to allow you to use this service to shield your
accounts from competitors. Additional information from the NetApp Competitive Account Team (CAT) is
available at https://fieldportal.netapp.com/competitive/overview.aspx.
EMC: EMC competitive takeout campaigns against NetApp have included the following:

EMC Isilon One and Done Promotion:

Free Isilon Migration Solution Package valued at $25K includes:
Solution architecture
Project and test planning
A sample dataset migration up to 10TB
Discounted Professional Migration Services
30% discount on EMC Isilon PS Migration Services
EMC Isilon: best-of-class scale-out NAS
Isilon OneFS 7.0 Mavericks: New EMC offering that includes a built-in NetApp FAS migration
tool to ease customer migrations from NetApp FAS to Isilon
The NetApp FAS to Isilon migration tool is for 7-Mode (Data ONTAP 7.3 and above) CIFS
and NFS migrations and is built into the Isilon OneFS. EMC claims that it is more efficient
than other third-party tools. It is designed to migrate data from NetApp natively to Isilon,
including ACLs. EMC claims it will leverage snapdiff to eliminate the need to perform
expensive tree walks and hence speed migration to Isilon.

NetApp response: The new Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service offering and its aggressive pricing
will help you protect your accounts from an EMC attack. Why throw away all of your NetApp advantages
and the significant performance improvements that come with clustered Data ONTAP? Why take the
gamble on Isilon?
What training is going to be made available?
Answer: A sales training presentation is posted on the Clustered Data ONTAP Migration Service Field
Portal site. This training focuses on the service itself, pricing, and the sales motion.
What data migration tools training is available for people interested in refreshing their technical
skills?
Answer: For SAN-based (that is, DTA2800) data migration, the following NetAppU courses are available:
