Reflection
4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital
information and technologies.
For this standard, I have created the artifacts that demonstrate my ability to model and
facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. These
artifacts include The Internet Safety Blog Posting, the Multimedia Design Project, which focuses
on the effects of cyberbullying and the Copyright Assignment. In the Internet Safety Blog
Posting I was able to describe my ability to teach students the correct and wrong way to use the
Internet, how to prevent and handle cyberbullying, the dangers of online predators, and the
importance of protecting private information online. This artifact explains how I was able to use
technology as a tool to engage students in learning about internet safety using websites such as
netsmartz.org, and with the use of acronyms which helps my students retain the information that
they have learned regarding the importance of internet safety. I described how I was able to
develop the 5Cs to ensure that my students stay safe while using the internet. The 5Cs, which
includes Cautious, Confidentiality, Communication, Citizenship, and Consequences, are essential
components I developed to help teach my students about internet safety. The Copyright
Assignment was a PowerPoint presentation that could be used in a professional development.
This presentation explained the definition of copyright, the four factors of Fair Use, the
importance of The Teach Act and how it effects video usage in the classroom and the two types
of video mediums & how to use them. To reinforce what I taught my students about internet
safety, I created a Multimedia Design Project/WebQuest using Weebly. Rebeccas Journal is a
Cyberbullying project which is based on a play written by me. This play brings awareness to the
community about the effects of cyberbullying. The play takes place in Rebeccas home after her

funeral. The events that led to her death are revealed as friends, family, teachers, and even her
bully read excerpts from her journal. To help students and the audience analyze and constructing
meaning from this theatrical experience, students completed a WebQuest on cyberbullying, why
it happens, and how to prevent it. This WebQuest was created using the Universal Design
Principle and met the diverse needs of all students, by being hands-on, interactive, collaborative,
and internet based. It also provided multiple options for student learning and allowed my
students to have ownership of their learning by giving them choices about how they want to learn
and what they want to produce.
Standard 4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use states that candidates will model and
facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. The
Internet Safety Blog Posting, the Multimedia Design Project, and the Copyright Assignment,
artifacts demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use of
digital information and technologies. The Internet Safety Blog Posting artifact describes how I
was able to successfully model and facilitate importance of internet safety while cultivating
digitally responsible citizens. It describes my ability to model and facilitate internet safety by
implementing three strategies that engage students as they learn about internet safety. These
strategies include using multimedia, role-playing, and implementing the acronym, the 5Cs. The
first strategy I described was the use of multimedia and videos to engage student learning. The
second strategy is role-playing which is a used to help students learn about internet safety
because it encourages students to use higher order thinking skills to make good decisions. Using
role play, my students developed solutions to the problems presented in the scenarios and
evaluated the characters actions. The third strategy, acronyms helped my students retain the
information that they have learned. For students remember the importance of internet safety, I

have developed the 5Cs in order help them remember to stay safe while using the internet. The
5Cs stands for Cautious, Confidentiality, Communication, Citizenship, and Consequences, all
which are key components to teaching internet safety.
The second artifact I used to demonstrate my ability to model and facilitate the safe,
healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies is the Multimedia Design
Project. This artifact is a WebQuest cyber bullying project that helps students gain an
understanding of the emotionally, physically, and psychologically effect cyberbullying has on
teens. Using my play Rebeccas Journal and technology, students were able to use higher order
thinking skills to create an authentic and meaningful product, make informed decisions, and
create social change. This project was designed using the Universal Design principles and met
the diverse needs of all students, by being hands-on, interactive, collaborative, and internet
based. It also had multiple options for student learning and allowed my students to have
ownership of their learning by giving them choices about how they want to learn and what they
want to produce. Students have the choice of producing a PowerPoint, Movie, Prezi, a Digital
Story, Digital poem or song to educate and persuade Rebeccas bully and other teens to end
Cyberbullying.
The third artifact I used to demonstrate my ability to model and facilitate the safe,
healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies is the Copyright
Assignment. The Copyright Assignment artifact is a PowerPoint presentation that Technology
facilitators can use in professional developments. This presentation describes the importance of
Copyright and Fair Use, the four factors of Fair Use, and The Teach Act. With permission from
Common Sense Media, I embed a video on Copyright and Fair Use Animation that explains what
a Copyright is and encourages people to think before they copy anything from the internet. Not

only is this video helpful for teachers but beneficial for students as well. In this artifact, I have
described what teachers are allowed to implement under the Teach Act. This artifact includes
scenarios to help teachers make a connection to what they have learned and links are provided if
additional information is needed.
As a result of these artifacts, I have learned that technology can be an effective tool used
to engage learners who cannot be accommodated by the traditional classroom, but when not used
appropriately, technology can also be a dangerous tool. Therefore, if I am to advocate for
technology integration and facilitation, then I must remember that student safety is a top priority.
As a responsible educator, it is important for me to teach my students that the misuse of the
internet can lead to serious consequences. For that reason, it is important that I teach my students
the right and wrong way to use the internet, how to prevent and handle cyberbullying, the
dangers of online predators, and the importance of protecting private information online.
To improve the quality of these artifacts, I would provide more information and resources
on how parents can prevent Cyberbullying. I would also include information on how parents can
also model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of technology. By doing so,
parents too can demonstrate examples of a good digital citizen.
These artifacts have a great impact on school improvement, faculty development, and
student learning. The Internet Safety Blog Posting can have a great impact on schools due to the
emotionally, physically, and psychologically stress Cyberbullying can cause. Also, misuse of
technology can affect discipline issues in the classroom and affect students academic
achievement. The misuse of the internet while on school grounds, is a violation of school policy
and is a criminal offense. However, teaching students about internet safety encourage students to
become productive digital citizens and encourages students to use critical thinking skills while

making wise decisions. When educators model and facilitate technology safety, they protect and
impact student learning. Assessment tests such as iPredator can be used to measure a students
Internet safety practices and online risk vulnerabilities.
