Human hibernation is proposed as an adaptive survival trait mediated by changes in cell membrane properties and mitochondrial pathways. It is theorized to be controlled genetically by "master genes" FTO-snv(rs1421085) and IRX3, IRX5 and their effector genes, defining two phenotypes: complete hibernation with protection from disease, or incomplete hibernation with disease risk. Proposed studies using Isotopomer Spectral Analysis and CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing on cell lines under normoxic and hypoxic conditions aim to demonstrate the influence of proposed hibernation genes on energetic pathways like glycolysis and reductive carboxylation.
