DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
APPROVAL FOR RESEARCH USING HUMAN SUBJECTS
At the University of Maryland, all research using human subjects must be approved by an
Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to the start of the research project. This process is
necessary in order to protect the rights of human participants and to ensure that
researchers follow ethical guidelines.
Research conducted in undergraduate classes for the purposes of instruction is exempt from
IRB approval, but ONLY if the following guidelines are followed:
Research projects conducted for course requirements must NOT:
1, Be published (e.g., on- or off-campus news publications, professional journals, etc.)
2. Be presented outside of class (eg., at campus-wide colloquiums, professional
conferences, etc.)
3. Be disseminated in any other manner (e.g., web sites, email, phone conferences, etc.)
If the researcher intends to publish, present, or otherwise disseminate the research results
as outlined above, IRB approval is absolutely necessary. Failure to obtain IRB approval under
these circumstances is taken very seriously by the University.
