EE2001 Circuit Analysis

Assignment 1
Year : 2016

Prepared by : Asst. Prof. Justin Dauwels

1. (a). Sketch the waveform of the voltage across the capacitor Vc (t) in the range t [0, 10] s for the circuit
given in the figure 1(a). The capacitor contains an initial voltage Vc (0 ) = +3 V. The waveform of
the current i(t) is given in the figure 1(b). Compute the energy stored in the capacitor at t = 10 s.

1. (b). Derive the expression for the voltage across the capacitor Vc (t) for t > 0 for the circuit given in the
figure 2. From the expression of Vc (t), obtain the following:
(i) time constant of this circuit,
(ii) voltage across the capacitor immediately after the switch is closed, i.e., Vc (0+ ), and
(iii) steady state value of Vc (t), i.e., Vc (t = ).
t=0

2. The switch in the circuit shown in the figure 3 has been at position 1 for a long time. At t = 0, it is
moved to the position 2. Use the time domain analysis method to determine the current across the
inductor for t > 0. Compute the energy stored in the inductor at t = 1/3 s.

3. Consider the circuit shown in the figure 4. The switch S has been open for a long time and is closed
at t = 0. Use the time domain analysis to determine the complete expression for the current iL (t) for
t > 0. Hint: Use the initial conditions to compute the value of the constants.
