Condition Monitoring of Transformers (on photo: distributive tranformer by Gazoogleheimer via Flickr)
Detectingearlysignsofdeterioration
Itispossibletoprovidetransformerswithmeasuringdevicestodetectearlysignsof

Thetechnique,whichcanbeappliedtootherplantaswellastransformers,iscalledcondition

atransformer.
Theextenttowhichconditionmonitoringisappliedtotransformersonasystemwilldependon
manyfactors,amongstwhichwillbethepolicyoftheassetowner,thesuitabilityofthedesign
(existingtransformersmayrequiremodificationsinvolvingaperiodoutofservicethismaybe
costlyandnotjustified),theimportanceoftheassettosystemoperation,andthegeneralrecord
ofreliability.
Therefore,itshouldnotbeexpectedthatalltransformerswouldbe,orneedtobe,sofitted.

Asassetownersbecomemoreconsciousofthecostsofanunplannedoutage,and

usefulnessofthistechniquecanbeexpectedtogrow.
