ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

OVERARCHING ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S):

- How are quadratic functions used to model, analyze and interpret mathematical relationships?
TOPICAL ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
- What characteristics of the graph of a quadratic function distinguish it from that of a linear function?
- How would you recognize a situation when a quadratic equation should be solved by extracting the
square root?
- How can Completing the square of a quadratic equation help find the solution to that equation?
- Why would you want to use the Quadratic Formula to solve a quadratic equation?

GLOs AND SLOs

GLO(s):
- Develop algebraic and graphical reasoning through the study of relations
SLO(s):
- Factor a polynomial expressions of the form ax2+bx + c, a 0, where a, b and c are rational
numbers
- Analyze quadratic functions of the form y = a(x-p)2+q and determine the: vertex, domain and range,
direction of opening, axis of symmetry, x-and y-intercepts.
- Analyze quadratic functions of the form ax2+bx + c to identify characteristics of the corresponding
graph, including: vertex, domain and range, direction of opening, axis of symmetry, x- and yintercepts and to solve problems.
- Solve problems that involve quadratic equations

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
- Be able to recognize quadratic functions in algebraic, tabular and graphical form.
- Understand that the vertex is the max or min
- Understand that completing the square adds a term to both sides of the equation that transforms in
into a perfect square trinomial
- Be able to understand that the quadratic formula can be used to solve any quadratic equation
- Be able to analyze formulas in both vertex and standard form
- Be able to solve problems that involve quadratic equations

Unit Final

Brief Description
This will be given half way through the unit
after the first section is complete. It will be
used as an assessment of how well
students understood the first section of this
unit. It will be based solely on Quadratic
Functions.
This will be given on the last day of the
unit. They will have a class to work on it
and then before the test we will go through
the assignment as a class and discuss any
questions that gave the students trouble.
Can be used to inform whether they are
ready for the test or if more help is needed.
Given throughout the unit. Used for extra
practice for the students to know where
they need help. Will periodically be taken in
to be used as assessment on students
ability
Already written

Assessment FOR Learning

OF Learning

Given out periodically during the unit. Will

ask a couple of questions about how the
students are Feeling about the unit where
they are struggling and think that they
might need help. Also ask a couple of
question pertaining to the lesson. This will
help make sure that they arent
exaggerating how they are understanding
the information.
