Standards Review for ELA 5th-12th First Draft, Laura Crawford, Deer
Creek Middle School
Concern: THIS IS MY BIGGEST CONCERN!!!! It is standardizing a teaching technique instead of focusing on what the student should be able to do with questioning at each grade level. 1. Speaking and Listening 5th-12th in pairs, groups, whole class standardizes teaching technique instead of what students will do. Recommendation: change to Students will ask and answer questions regarding X.information, interpretation, etc (whatever fits grade level focus). Concern: 2. Reading and Writing Critically - 5th-7th 5th genre, connect and respond to textsobjective summary (**) make inferencesevidence to support 6th same as above plus **and to begin to paraphrase 7th same as above plus ** and begin to generalize Recommendation: Identify begin to It is ambiguous. Concern: 3. Reading Critically and 6. Research 6th grade standards need to be consistent students willto begin to paraphrase.. Reading students willsummary, paraphrase accurately Research, meaning if students are only beginning to paraphrase in 6th grade, how will that paraphrase for research with accuracy (which alludes to mastery)? Good things! Vertical progression 5-12 in Writing with a Grade Level Focus Reading and Writing Critically 8-12 8th Student will identify genre, connect and respond to texts summary, paraphrase, generalizemake inferencesevidence to support 9th same as above, but addsgeneralize, and synthesizecite thorough evidencehistorical and cultural perspectives focus on works from American, British, and/or world literature. 10th Same as 9th 11th same as above, but adds cite specific, thorough evidence 12th Same as 11th
