Winnipeg, Manitoba R1N 3R8 204-871-1414 cduffield@retsd.mb.ca January 1 st, 2016 To whom it may concern, It is my pleasure to write a letter of reference for Samantha Adamson. There is no question that Sam has the makings of a great teacher. Sam is currently a teacher candidate at Transcona Collegiate Institute and has taught my Computer Science 20s students. It was immediately clear from her first day that Sam understood the importance of understanding each students ability level and meeting them there. Sam began her block by performing a formative assessment to gauge the level of understanding of each student. Her activities and planned experiences afterwards were always appropriate and challenging for each student. Sam also skillfully encouraged inquiry, or co-discovery of knowledge with the students whenever possible. In groups, she got her students to select either a historic figure or a current career in computer science. With some leading questions, they explored and presented their findings to others. While they did this, Sam was able to teach and encourage the use of 21st century skills such as teamwork, collaboration, and communication by modelling and structuring the experience for the students. However, what impresses me most about Sam is her desire to become involved with the school community. She volunteered to travel to John Gunn School to help facilitate a programming afternoon with grade 8 students before she even began her practicum block. There, she led and organized high school students from TCI and helped supervise activities. Further, Sam volunteered and help decide activities for TCIs hour of code event on Friday, Dec. 11th. At that event, she led students through a variety of activities and helped ensure its success. Lastly, Sam volunteered to attend home room meetings whenever possible to learn more about how they work and to make connections with the students there. It is obvious to me that Sam is not only a great classroom teacher, but that she will also ambitiously add so much more to her next workplace. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at any time. It would be my pleasure to tell you more. Sincerely,
