SCHOOL ASSESSMENT ASSIGNMENT

Assessment Results
The observations Ive made while doing my residency at Cesar Chavez
Leadership Academy have been quite fascinating. Although, Ive only been at Cesar
Chavez for a few months, I was informed that 8 years ago this school was a failing school
and the government took over. The school was not stable; most teachers would leave
after a year or two. Cesar Chavez did not offer any physical activity programs that would
help students, nor did they offer any program that would help students achieve their
goals. This school has come a long way, luckily Ivette Rodriguez; the principal now,
stepped in and made some major changes.

SCHOOL ASSESSMENT ASSIGNMENT

One major change that I consider a strength is that Cesar Chavez became a Leader
In Me School. Cesar Chaves incorporates the seven habits on a daily basis. The seven
habits are practiced each day and are encouraged among the students. In addition to
incorporating the seven habits, Cesar Chavez also became a Kagan school. Kagan
structures increases academic achievement, improves ethnic relations, enhances selfesteem, creates a more harmonious classroom climate, reduces discipline problems, and
develops students' social skills and character virtues (Kagan Online, 2016). While using
Kagan strategies, teachers incorporate physical activates to their lesson plans. When
implementing the seven habits, the last habit is Sharpen the saw, means you take care
of your body, exercise, and get enough sleep. This is beneficial because the students are
encouraged to automatically use the seven habits.
Although these strengths are significant, I do see a weakness we can improve on.
Cesar Chavez lacks awareness of how important it is to have nutritious meals. Since the
beginning of the year Ive observed what my students bring to class, and it includes
nothing but junk food. The snacks they bring may include Takis, Hot Cheetos, Kool-Aid,
Cookies, and other snacks along those lines. The second weakness is the snacks they sell
afterschool, again not healthy and pure junk food. The snacks they sell include hot
Cheetos, Doritos, Lays, Mexican Candy, various sodas and they add Chamoy! Chamoy is
a sweetener and it includes around 80g of sugar, with a total of 80 calories per serving,
according to My Fitness Pal.
This ties in directly to the school assessment survey. The results indicate that we
scored a 20% under Curriculum and After School. The way we can improve both
weaknesses is by informing the students. We can inform students by teaching mini

SCHOOL ASSESSMENT ASSIGNMENT

lessons, with a lot of visuals, examples and videos of how junk food affects our body. We
the teachers can be more encouraging towards the kids on bringing nutritious foods. I
strongly believe that once the students are informed about what they are eating, they
would start making healthier choices, and all the sections of the school assessment would
increase. My 1st graders would be pleased to be learning about the effects of junk food
and learning about alternative food they can eat. The way we can improve the after
school food stand is by having a meeting with the staff that runs the stand. Simply by
talking to them on the benefits of incorporating healthy snacks and breaking down what
the junk food is doing to our kids.
The outcome that I would expect from the two suggestions is one; seeing students
bringing healthy, nutritious snacks to school and the food stand selling healthy snacks. I
would also expect students to be engaged in the topic and genuinely caring about their
body. I would want them to think of various ways they can help their body, or should I
say, Sharpen The Saw. I would really want the food stand to be supportive and
understanding in making better choices when selling the snacks.
One way to engage administration, teachers, parents, students and the community
in promoting more healthful behaviors is by inviting guest speakers to meetings or
assemblies. Having a guest speaker can be beneficial because they can speak about
issues that relates to the topic and have a better understanding of the topic. This helps
everyone be aware and everyone learns something new.
The second way to engage the community in this is by sending information home.
Most of the parents in the community dont have time to attend any meetings, workshops
or assemblies because they work, but by sending pamphlets and resources out they would

have a better understanding of what is going on in school and how they can help. The
parents would be helping by encouraging their kids to bring healthier food.
Engaging parents and administration would increase the school assessment
drastically. This information can be brought up in the assemblies, meetings, pamphlets
and workshops. It can be used as an eye-opening tool for everyone. I believe that this
tool can change everything, by seeing this everyone will want a change!
The information gathered can help facilitate the process of my Signature
Assignment. The information can support my Signature Assignment topic, which will
mostly likely be related to awareness to various foods and the effects it has on your body.
I have a good understanding of the topic and can expand on my findings and knowledge
with the Signature Assignment.
Information
Im currently completing my senior residency at Cesar Chavez Leadership
Academy in the Roosevelt School, in an urban area in South Phoenix. Im placed in a 1st
grade ELD classroom with 4 ELLs and 1 monolingual. I have a total of 18 students in my
classroom. The school is K- 8th grade and there were at total of 424 students enrolled in
2014. 12 of those students were Caucasian, 0 were Asian, 3 African American, 402
Hispanic/Latino, 3 American Indian, 0 Pacific Islander, and 4 were more than two races
according to School Digger.
The total population, race around the school is a total of 29, 865. There are eight
main populations that make up the demographics around the school. The majority of the
community is Hispanic with a population of 19, 032. The African American population is
the second most around the school, with a population of 5,766. 3,108, are Caucasian, 451,

are American Indian, 139 are Pacific Islanders, 373 are Asian, 424 are two or more races
and 59 are other race not listed, according to City Data.
Cesar Chavez Leadership Academy is a public title 1 school, that was once a
failing school and it is now a B+ school. The percentage of ELLs in the school is not
determined, however 43% of the populations household language is Spanish, according
to Movoto Real Estate. In 2014 the percentage of students who received free/reduced
lunch was a 1.4 ratio and the student to teacher ration last year was 24.2, according to
School Digger.
