Haiku Poem Analysis

Sound of a stream,
Sunlight dancing on waters,
Life wakes up again.
This untitled Haiku poem was written by Roumiana Tsenkova in 2004. I chose this
poem because I like the way the language forms, personification and alliteration, were used to
depict things in the poem. The writer does not use difficult words to describe things in the
poem; she uses easy understanding of words to represent the action of non-living things. This
conveys the image of waking up in the middle of a peaceful place, surrounded by nature,
where you can eventually hear the water in the stream, flowing in the early morning. The
relaxing sound of the water in the stream, and the sunlight gives the reader a warm sensation
that theres life and freshness. This life and freshness reflects on how we can start over and
wake up to new adventures. The incidents that happened in the past that had sorrow and
sadness would be left behind and flows down the stream. When life tries to bring you down,
you would have to continue and move on, starting a new day and make the best out of it.
The literary devices that are used in the poem are personification and alliteration.
Personification is used to compare one thing to another. The writer described the action of
sunlight by using the word dancing to give the sunlight, which is non-living thing, a human
characteristic. The sunlight is not actually dancing on the water, but its shining on the water
that moves all the time. So, the writer used dancing to describe how the sunlight is moving on
the curvy water. Alliteration is used between the words sound, stream and sunlight. The use
of alliteration helps the poem to be more catchy because the repetition of the consonant sound
in each word makes the word stand out and thus, become more memorable to the reader.

According to the explanation about how the writer uses different types of language
forms to describe things in the poem in the above paragraph, I think the writer was very
successful in expressing ideas and feelings to the readers. Even though, this poem is short and
simple, there are still some deep meanings hiding inside each word.
