Synthesize

I think that I did synthesize a little bit. Although I

focused on the specifics of the case, I did bring together
various problems into one issue. One design challenge is the
amount of material that Ben and Laura want to include in the
exhibit In this case, the challenge is compounded by the fact
that Janette has a tendency to encourage clients to think big
(Nelson, 2014, p.198). Here I synthesized the challenges
created by an overenthusiastic marketing person and an
overenthusiastic client.

I wrote, If I find it interesting, my kids are not that interested

in it. This exemplifies a principle that it is difficult to design
activities that engage such a wide variety of learners. This
principle is not specific to this case, but the case does

encounter this problem.

As I look at this now, I did not really connect the issues. I
identified two main issues: too much desired content and too
much desired interactivity. Now, I see this as one issue: the

client wants more than they budgeted for.

I think that I was pretty reflective because I did stick to the
facts in the case. Thats kind of amusing to me because for

every case, I did have questions that I would have liked to ask.
However, in the actual scenario, I do not believe I made any
inferences nor did I suggest that the problem could be solved

by knowing more about the scenario.

My final recommendation included this line: .If they can find
students willing to serve as interns, then that will work out
well, but, if not, at least Ben can realize that he may need to
dial back his vision, given his budget. I tried to find a way to
solve all the problems: Bens lack of limits, the low budget, etc.

with one solution.

The fact that we had to list the pros and cons of the solutions
kind of forced me to consider the implications. When I thought
about hiring University students, I said, . However, it may be
difficult to work with university students. They may graduate
or move on. While thinking that those students were a great
resource, I also recognized what might go wrong if they

decided to go that route.

I used words like could, may etc, rather than will or

should.
I dont know that I did a great job on this case. I barely knew

what I was doing. However, when I look at the qualities of an

expert vs novice, I think I was less novice than I thought. I
attribute that to my years teaching mathematics. I think math
trains the brain to think in these expert ways.

It really seems like I am summarizing what I read. To be
honest, Im still not sure how I would synthesize this issue.
Unless discussing the common problem of poor attitudes on

Principles vs

the part of the participants would be synthesizing.

I think I managed to look at principles. For example, I
stated, Another design challenge is the diverse audiences of
the teachers. I further elaborated that different teachers
have different needs. However, rather than discussing how
each need could be met, I discussed how to generally meet

all the needs.

I prioritized the issues and connected them. I said that the
teachers may resent the district hiring an outside consultant
when they are expected to use their own funds to by copy
paper (Cullen & Rulison, 2014, p. 51). This recognized that
some of their resistance comes from the fourth issue: the
lack of budget. I also recognized that solving one problem
(resistance) could help with others (diversifying): If
Vincent gets them to buy in and uses the time he is given
effectively, the teachers could probably adapt what they are

learning for their specific area.

As a teacher, I knew a lot more about this situation. I could
put myself in the place of the teachers and in the place of

someone who thinks the change would be good. I felt that I

had enough information to make some recommendations

based on the scenario and my experience.

I think I did a good job of finding a solution that would
cover most of the problems. I certainly didnt view the
problems and subsequent solutions as discrete. I think this
choice combines the two options to overcome the biggest
constraints: resistance to change and the time needed to

teach the material.

I think I did a fairly good job of considering the implications
of the decisions. Again, the requirement to list the cons
helped here. Shadowing teachers is time consuming. Im
not sure he will have the time to create the buy in that will
be needed for a quick adoption. It is possible that the
teachers will be suspicious of his motives and that will result
in skepticism from the very teachers that he hopes will

influence the others.

I use the words recommend which indicates flexibility.
Then I use the word should which indicates rigidity.
However, in practice, if my idea was shot down, I would try

add further, more general depth to the problem at hand. This

program has used wikis, but did not give any training on how
to use them. I felt weird just going in and changing other
peoples work. For me, this highlighted the need to train the

I was pretty specific about Davids concerns. However, I also

I realized that the problems were symbiotic. When I was

If the struggle is more frustrating than productive, Gina and

David may be more discouraged than encouraged to try this

Action Plan for Moving Forward

I have to say that our discussion this week really helped me realize that I think I am at a
stage where I just need more experience. I dont think I need any more knowledge. Not that I
would never need more knowledge or that there is nothing more to learn from reading and
discussing, but I really need to start doing so I have a stronger anchor for the reading and
discussing. Thats pretty impressive since 14 months ago, I didnt even know what instructional
design was and had never even heard of the ADDIE model.
I have been hired as a Teacher Curriculum Reviewer at my school. Those duties start
soon. I will be working with our instructional designers to revamp the PreCalculus course,
which hasnt changed in eight years. I am looking forward to working with these experienced
professionals so that I can learn from them.
