Lose weight Talk to your healthcare provider about what

your ideal weight should be. Call 1-855-SP-MY-DOC to find
a doctor. A nutritionist can design an eating plan for you. Call
732.745.7930 to make an appointment for an evaluation.
Stay active Exercising is one of the surest ways to get
healthy and stay healthy. A physical therapist can help to
design an exercise routine that includes a safe warm up and
cool down. The Saint Peters Department of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation can be reached at 732.745.8570; the
Saint Peters Sports Medicine Institute can be reached at
732.565.5455.
Eat less white food When you eat white bread, white
rice, white pasta and white potatoes the level of blood sugar
in your bloodstream spikes. It is believed that eating these
foods causes overeating because after your blood sugar
spikes it dips and your body craves carbohydrates.
Stress relief Find healthy ways to manage your stress.
In addition to eating well and finding time for rest, seek out
support from someone you can trust. Stay organized so you
can manage your time more efficiently. Visit the Saint Peters
Better Health Library at http://betterhealth.saintpetershcs.com
to learn more about stress relief.
Meditate This is an effective stress-buster that has been
practiced for thousands of years. There are many techniques
for meditating and one of the chief benefits of practicing
meditation is the fact that it calms your mind.
Eat less salt Salt is known to increase blood pressure
because it causes the body to retain fluids which puts an
extra burden on your heart. Eating too much salt will increase
your likelihood of developing heart disease, and increases
your risk of osteoporosis, stroke and kidney disease.

Manage blood pressure Uncontrolled high blood pressure,

or hypertension, is one of the risk factors for strokes, heart
disease and heart attacks, aneurysms and kidney failure. Have
your blood pressure checked by your primary healthcare
provider. The Community Mobile Health Services healthcare
team provides free blood pressure screenings throughout the
year. Call 732.745.8600, ext. 8903 for more information.
Stop smoking The effects of smoking on your body have
been well documented. Dont smoke and if you do, stop. The
benefits are practically instant. For one, your lung capacity will
improve within days of kicking the habit. Call 732.339.7747
for more information about our Lung Screening Program.
Manage diabetes Diabetes also is a risk factor for heart
disease. It can be prevented, but when developed as a result
of poor diet and lack of exercise, it can be controlled through
education and lifestyle changes. For more information about
the Saint Peters Diabetes Self-Management Education
Program, call 732.339.7630.
Get good sleep In recent years research has pointed to
the fact that lack of sleep contributes to disease and causes
weight gain. Sleep well and you will more likely find peace of
mind and the energy you need to get through the day. Visit the
Saint Peters Healthcare System YouTube Channel to watch
videos about getting a good nights sleep. To inquire about a
prescribed sleep study, call the Saint Peters Center for Sleep
and Breathing Disorders at 732.937.6055.
