NOTE: The stability of the rear-side of a berm breakwater is very important for its overall stability. In the case of moderate to severe damage to the rear-side, the risk of total failure of the crest and front side of a berm breakwater is very large. Van der Meer and Veldman (1992) suggested using the following values for the overall design factor (see also PIANC, 2003a): Rc 1 / 3 sop = 0.25 for start of damage Hs Rc 1 / 3 sop = 0.21 for moderate damage Hs Rc 1 / 3 sop = 0.17 for severe damage Hs where Rc is the crest freeboard (m) and sop is the fictitious wave steepness (-) based on the peak wave period, Tp (s). 1
