Unit Statement: This unit is designed to be as an introductory unit to concepts that would
be essential for a student to begin to understand computer programming. Selective unit
one is designed to assist the student in making a choice as to continue further studies by
taking AP Computer Science. It is also designed as an opportunity for the student to gain a
deeper understanding of how computer software works. The student will select a topic in
conducting an in-depth research project. Suggestions are listed below; this could be an
individual project or a collaborative project.
Essential Outcomes: (assessed for mastery)
1. The Student Will collaborate with other students to write the steps and procedure
to solve a problem.
2. TSW survey and describe the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of
computer languages.
3. TSW demonstrate with an outline the process of computer programming, including
conceptual design to debugging and beta testing to final roll-out.
4. TSW demonstrate understanding of: conditionals, user input, variables, looping.
5. TSW demonstrate understanding of the difference between compiled and uncompiled code.
6. TSW demonstrate understanding by explaining the use of display text & numbers,
arrays.
7. TSW collaborate in the design of a project through discussions and brainstorming.
Suggested Materials:
Software: Karel the Robot can be used to complete programming section.
(If robotics are to be used then this takes a year of advanced planning.)
Hardware:
No unique or special hardware is needed for this unit.
Project:
The student will design a project on a current topic at the forefront of programming (AI,
computer chess, micro-computing, distributed computing, bionics or any new "great idea"
in computing and how these ideas affect the world in which we live.
