INSPIRED BY CUBISM This unit explores the experimental nature of Cubism and the difference between realistic and

d semi-abstract imagery.
Students need to select from a range of activities that develop their knowledge of artmaking techniques, as well as develop their ability to describe, analyse and write
about artworks using one or more of the Frames. Refer to Google classroom - mx4c3h or http://artebhsmshoward.weebly.com/inspired-by-cubism.html for a copy of this sheet.
Resources will be shared via google docs and hard copies will be available in the classroom each lesson. Accessing resources online will reduce paper wastage.

Practical task 1 Draw a 10cm x 10cm square in your VAPD. Copy a section of the image provided.
Focus on representing the tonal variation. Use the enlarged photocopy with this folder. Ensure a copy
of this task is in your VAPD.
Practical task 2 Arrange 4 5 still life objects on a table. Include some instruments in the
arrangement. Using a digital camera create 4 different PHOTOGRAPHIC compositions. Print out a
contact sheet and glue into your VAPD.
Practical Task 3 Draw a 10cm x 10cm square in your VAPD. Draw a section of one of the Still Life
drawings. Include all of the details and tonal variation. See resource folder for images. Ensure a copy of
this task is in your VAPD.
Practical Task 4 Use one of your photographs or a still life painting as inspiration for a simplified
Collage which focuses on composition, shape and colour.

your Visual Arts Process Diary.

Theory sheet 3. Describe a Cubist painting using 6 words from the


Vocabulary lists. You may do this task using the sheet available in google
docs and save a copy in you Visual Arts Folder in the student drive titled
Task 3 - Describing a Cubist painting.
Theory sheet 4. Read a Historians description of a Cubist Painting.
Underline key points and summarise the 3 main ideas. Glue into your
Visual Arts Process Diary.

Practical Task 5 Create a simplified Montage using PHOTOSHOP selection and layering techniques.
Use on of your photographs or a sourced Still Life photograph, selecting and rearranging areas to
reflect the Cubist style. Print and glue a copy into your VAPD.

Practical Task 6 Draw up a grid with approx. 16 squares 3cm x 3cm. Use these spaces to practice
mixing colours using acrylic paints. Aim for a variety of colours.

Practical Task 7 Using the images from your lead up tasks Montage, collage, drawings, photos, etc
create a Cubist inspired Painting. Your painting will be created on an A4 sheet of paper with a 10cm
border. Include a photograph of your final work in your VAPD and save in your work folder.
Practical Task 8 - Using the images from your lead up tasks Montage, collage, drawings, photos, etc
create a Cubist inspired relief Painting. Your painting will be created on an A4 size cardboard and
build up layers with cardboard. Include a photograph of your final work in your VAPD and save in your
work folder.
EVERYONE TO COMPLETE Practical choose your best 3 works. If drawings or collages then
photograph, if digital works convert to JPG file. Insert all images into a word document, write title of
unit and your name and submit digitally using google classroom.

Complete a selection of Practical tasks that equal to 70. You may be required to work on some of these tasks for
homework.

Theory sheet 5. Annotate a Cubist painting of your choice. Use the


vocabulary list provided. This can be done as a poster or PowerPoint. Save
your work in your Visual Arts Folder in the student drive - Theory Task 5 Self Directed Annotation.
Theory sheet 6. Create a presentation that explores the different types
of Cubism making reference to the key artist of this movement. Glue
evidence (photograph or summary of PP) into your Visual Arts Process
Diary.
Theory sheet 7. Write an extended response that explores how Cubist
artist challenged traditional conventions of painting. Use the scaffolding
and vocabulary provided. Glue into your Visual Arts Process Diary.

Allocate 3 lessons to complete your chosen theory tasks or


complete as homework.
