Grendel is a murderous monster that were banished by God for killing. By showing the readers his powers, it helped them understand why he is wanted to help Herot. By saying that Grendel can never know the love of God shows how dark and evil he is.

How did this piece of information enhance my understanding
of the poem?
What man, anywhere under
Heavens high arch, has fought in such darkness, endured more misery, or been harder pressed? Yet I survived the sea, smashed the monsters hot jaws, swam home from my journey. In Herot, when the night hid him, he never dared to touch King Hrothgars glorious throne, protected by GodGod, whose love Grendel could not know.
By showing the readers his powers, it helped them
understand how he can win every battle on his own. The reader understands that he is a very strong warrior and why he is wanted to help Herot.
He was spawned in that slime,
conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by God, punished forever for the crime of Abels death. I drove five great giants into chains, chased all of that race from the earth. I swam in the blackness of the night, hunting monsters out of the ocean and killing them one by one. They could hack at Grendel from every side, trying to open a path for his evil soul, but their points could not hurt him, the sharpest and hardest iron could not scratch his skin, for that sinstained demon had bewitched
This helps the reader understand why King
Hrothgar is never touched and shows that God is on their side. This shows that during this time, this region was starting to conform to Christianity. By saying that Grendel can never know the love of God shows how dark and evil he is. The reader understands that Grendel is a murderous monster that were banished by God for killing. The writer shows how hard it will be to defeat him in battle and how much damage he can do to Herot. This shows the reader how strong Beowulf is and how he has the strength to win against Grendel and his upcoming battles. It helps the reader understand his background and why he is a wellknown warrior in Herot.
This shows that not just any warrior could beat
Grendel, they had to be strong and do it with their hands only. This emphasizes Beowulfs strength when he is able to tear Grendels arm off and defeat him with no weapon.
all mens weapons, laid spells
that blunted every mortal mans blade. Wiglaf
Wiglaf is the only one to stay
back and help fight with his idol.
Death
Beowulfs death represents the
idea that all men and all their works shall die.
Only one of them remained,
stood there, miserable, remembering, as a good man must, what kingship should meanWiglafs mind was made up; he raised his yellow shield and drew his sword. Take what I leave, Wiglaf, lead my people. Help them; my time is gone. Have the brave Geats build me a tomb, when funeral flames have burned me, and build it here, on waters edge, high on this spit of land, so sailors can see this tower, and remember my name
This shows that Wiglaf is the only other warrior to
stay and help Beowulf. This shows you that when the time comes, Herot will have a warrior like Beowulf to help them through the battles they face.
This helps the reader understand that not every
man lives forever, even heroes will eventually die. This shows the reader that the brave Wiglaf will take over fighting for Herot in Beowulfs place.
