Dear Take Action Tuesday Leaders,

We are so excited that IST will be hosting next years AISA-Global Issues Service Summit. It
will be an inspiring event that will empower students to become agents of change in our world,
particularly in relation to the 20 global issues highlighted in Jean Francois Rischards powerful
book High Noon: 20 Global Problems and 20 Years to Solve Them.
As you know, the focus of this conference is service. One of our tasks is to prepare and execute a
service program for the students to participate in on day 3 of the conference. Student delegates
from schools across Africa will spend the day on one of 12 service sites in order to gain a rich
service learning experience. Your service project could be one of these sites!
We would be thrilled if you would consider participating in one of these committees. We believe
you have the skills and expertise that will make the planning of this summit a grand success, and
we would love to have you as part of the GISS team for 2016.

AISA GISS 2016

Name of Take Action Tuesday Group or CAS project:

Creating a Private-Public Partnership (PPP) Education Centre

Why are you interested in getting involved with GISS 2016?

As an IB student you are required to initiate a project that you whole-heartedly lead. Whether
it be a group project or individual project. I am interested in getting involved in GISS with my
projects as I believe that it will not only help the participants understand more about the
environment that surrounds Tanzania, but it will also give them an insight as to how to aid
locals and the government develop a business that will aid the economy to some extent, and
conjunctively aid researchers and students.

Give a brief description of your service project:

My service project aims to work with the Tanzanian Marine Reserves and create a recognized
PPP Education Centre on Makatumbe Island, whereby university students and local students
can conduct research whether it be on the island itself or in the surrounding waters. This
project will help fund Tanzania Marine Parks in order to allow them to take rigorous precaution
to protect the surrounding reefs through the employment of locals to patrol the area and the
secure the island.

What makes your project unique/interesting?

My project is unique and interesting because it takes into two important aspects of our lives.
The ability to construct and develop a business (communication with other sects in the field)
and the care for our environment. The use of business in this project is interesting as it is used
to develop a framework for reef protection and education.

How is this project sustainable? (consider society, environment + economy)

This project once running will be run under the Marine Parks and perhaps IST (to be decided
upon). It will boost the income of the marine parks in order to fund projects to protect the
island. The protection of the island will lead to a lower rate of reef and land degradation. It will
also allow for research to be conducted on the island and its surrounding areas for university
and school students under a cost.

Where is your project situated?

On an island situated near the fish market called Makatumbe

What type of work will delegates at your service site be involved in?

- Delegates will be split into groups, each working with a Member of the Marine Parks to
devise strategies for further protection of the island and to understand the way in which the
TMPA works
- Delegates will also get a chance to tour the island and go snorkeling to identify different
species that inhabit the island and its surroundings. This will allow for them not only to have a
good time, but also understand the benefits of protecting this island and thus encouraging
them to discuss and derive stronger protection strategies.
- Delegates will also, be taught by representatives from the marine parks protection strategies
that they are able to implement in other coastal regions.
- Delegates may even get a chance to talk to some of the fishermen about their jobs and why
they do what they do. (this depends on if we can get fishermen to open up about their jobs)
- Depending on how things work out as I am working on the project I may add or remove
certain activities in order to make the experience for the delegates not only fun but also
educational and inspiring.

How many people can be meaningfully engaged in action at the site?

20-30

What materials/ resources/ equipment will you need on site?

- Snorkeling equipment
- Water
- Poster paper and pens
- maps of the island
- a list of all the species found in the surrounding areas to help delegates identify the species

Which global issue(s) is your project related to?

Environment and sustainability
