Quick Tool for

Analysis &
Design of Beams
Name: Syed Jafar Shah Bukhari
Registration # 00000119080
Submitted To: Dr. Wasim Khaliq

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Develop a simple tool for quick analysis and design of RC
members.
To minimize, if not completely eradicate, the use of nonengineered construction of structures, particularly houses
and to provide a free, quick and efficient tool for analysis
and design.
Unlike the other complex software, requiring high specs
computers, the users will be able to use this tool via smart
phones, which will make it portable and best for on-sight
check of analysis and design.

METHODOLOGY
ASTM and ACI specified standards for construction of RC
members were followed.
The tool is developed in Microsoft Excel using the basic
commands and functions as well as the programing
language of MS Excel i-e Visual Basic of Application
(VBA).
Two separate Excel spread sheets are developed, one for
flexural analysis and design while the other for shear
analysis and design of beams.

How to Operate
Only the following inputs are required, which are put in
green boxes:
fc' (ksi) and fy (ksi)
beam width 'b' (in) and Assume beam depth 'h' (in)
D.L(ksi) and L.L(ksi)
support width (in) and Clear span Ln (ft) and c/c distance b/w
beams (ft)

Slab thickness hf (in) and Select Beam Case

Inputs Required

How to Operate Cont.

After entering the required inputs, flexural or shear
analysis and design of the beam will be generated
automatically.
ACI design checks will also be employed.

Output: Flexural Analysis and Design of the Beam.

Output: Shear Analysis and Design of the Beam.

Limitations and Future Plans

For now this tool is applicable for flexural and shear
design of beams with uniformly distributive loads only but
in the future I intend to develop similar spread sheets for
design of slabs, footings and columns with all types of
loadings.
