Computed Tomography uses ionizing radiation and computer assisted formatting to

produce multiple cross sectional planar images. Possible image planes include axial,
coronal, reformatted coronal and reformatted sagittal images. Slice width for orbital
studies is always 3mm or thinner. Radiodense contrast allows more extensive
evaluation of vascular structures and leaks where there is breakdown of the normal
capillary endothelial barrier (as with inflammation). Soft tissue windows are good in
determining some soft tissue pathologic features such as cellulitis/abscess (loss of
radiodense margins)

MRI uses a large magnetic field to excite protons of water molecules. The energy
given off as the protons reequilibrate to their normal state is detected by
specialized receivers (coils), and that the information is reconstructed into a
computer image. When looking for ocular or unilateral orbital pathologic condition,
may request and orbital surface coil; however, for most routine orbital studies, a
head coil is indicated to provide bilateral orbital views extending to the optic
chiasm. Always request fat suppression and gadolinium enhancement. Orbital
studies without these are incomplete and misleading.
