This ten week summer Design Build program produced an animal husbandry facility through the collaborative efforts of the architecture, landscape architecture, and
veterinary medicine programs at NCSU. The facility is divided into two separate, enclosed, needs-based spaces which give veterinary students ease of movement
between the two distinct spaces. The project emphasized the use of reclaimed wood and materials to help ground the structure to its rural surroundings. Wraparound
windows engender a constant connection to the natural surroundings and, more importantly, provide uninterrupted views of the animal pens.

Expansion of the new NCSU University Club facilities on campus allowed
for the addition of natural swimming pools intended to invite a variety
of alumni, families, and students to immerse themselves in this calming
natural retreat. A gradual transition from the traditional bricks and mortar
of academic life is afforded through incorporation of a series of smaller,
shifting transitory spaces. Such gradual transition allows for a more complete transformation into this nearby natural respite.

This simple coastal structure seeks to celebrate my favorite pastime of longboarding. The residential design is aligned along a single main axis upon which the entire
structure is balanced. Such balance allows for a stable platform which supports
predictable, controllable ease of movement. The sliding walls along the north and
south facades mimic the linear movement involved in propelling oneself effortlessly
along on a longboard.

MUSEUM

ARC202 I Mary Englund I Spring 2014

Analysis of Precinct Two in the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina served as the foundation of this design. The Museum of the City design pulls from the dominant and distinctive characteristics of this historic urban precinct. Every attempt was made to maintain and
celebrate the citys heritage throughout all aspects of the conception and design. The entry
to the Museum of the City seeks to allow visitors to experience the progressive changes to
Charlestons architectural heritage throughout time.

MOVEMENT

ARC201 I Mary Englund I Fall 2013

Edward Muybridges expressive photographic studies of motion
challenged this exacting study of spatial understanding. The free
and flowing motions of Muybridges dancer in a confined space
served as the basis for this study. An attempt to develop a sense of
fluidity and freedom in a coherent sequence guided this recreation
of space which allows for the dancers series of movements in a
limited amount of space.

CUBISM

ARC202 I Mary Englund I Spring 2014

Pablo Picassos cubist painting, LArlesienne, provides the rigid and fragmented topography for this exercise in which I emphasize a rather crucial moment from within
the painting. My interpretation seizes upon a single plane that folds and bends throughout this abstracted landscape. This single plane serves to define the volume
and guide path through the various elevations of the site.
