Last week-end, we celebrated the Feast of the

Baptism of the Lord. Since Monday last, we have
been using the color green for the Liturgical
vestments. We will continue to do so, till we reach
Ash Wednesday on February 10. The Season of
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and the color that
we shall use will be purple/violet.
This Week-end, we begin the Second Sunday in
Ordinary time. We begin the Season with a
Reading from Isaiah making it clear that God
rejoices in us, like the Groom rejoicing over the
Bride. The Miracle at Cana, from the Gospel of
John, and the imagery of a Wedding Celebration
forms the background of Jesus First ever Miracle.
Saint Paul writing to the Corinthians speaks about
the gifts and talents that God gives every
individual. We are stewards of Gods Gifts of Time,
Talents and Treasure.
Next Saturday, the Academy and Parish
Appreciation Lunch is to thank those who use their
talents and gifts for the good of others. Thank you
to all others, for just attending our week-end
services, even if you are not volunteering to do
anything special in the Parish. God bless you ALL.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

SAINT CATHERINE OF SWEDEN

Saint Marianne Cope of Molokai

(1838-1918)
Feast Day January 23

Lord Jesus, you who gave us your

commandment of love of God and neighbor, and
identified yourself in a special way with the
most needy of your people, hear our prayer.
Faithful to your teaching, St. Marianne Cope
loved and served her neighbor, especially the
most desolate outcast, giving herself generously
and heroically for those afflicted by leprosy. She
alleviated their physical and spiritual sufferings,
thus helping them to accept their afflictions
with patience. Her care and concern for others
manifested the great love you have for us.
Through her merits and intercession, grant us
the favor which we confidently ask of you so
that the people of God, following the inspiration
of her life and apostolate, may practice charity
towards all according to your word and
example.
Amen

Todays Gospel
story gives us a
good example of
how to handle
conflicts without
sinning.
Mary sees a need
and wants Jesus
to do something
about it. She knows full well
that only a miraculous intervention will solve the problem. She wants the divine in
him to respond to her request, but the human nature
of Jesus responds first: He
doesn't want to reveal his
divinity with this kind of miracle. He's eager to heal souls,
not empty wine jars.

"Woman, how does your

concern affect me?" he says.
Friday January 22
"My hour has not yet come."
1 Samuel 24:3-21
This is like saying, "I respect
Ps 57:2-4,6,11
your request, holy Daughter
Mark 3:13-19
of Eve, but think about how a
miracle in this
situation
Saturday January 23
would
affect
the
ministry
I'm
2 Sam 1:1-4,11-12,19,23-27
about to start! People will
Ps 80:2-3,5-7
come to me for party favors
Mark 3:20-21
and other earthly pleasures,
but I want to give them eternal salvation."
We Catholics like to use this scripture as faith-building
evidence of the Blessed Mother's ability to help us. We
see her in this story as a mother who can get for us
whatever we want from Jesus, because she can make
him change his mind. Jesus told her no, but the conflict was resolved her way. Mary won, Jesus lost.
Isn't this how we view conflicts? It's not resolved until
someone's a winner and someone else is a loser.
Therefore, when we make requests of God and he

doesn't give us what we want, we

feel like we're the loser, so we pray
harder, trying to make God become
the loser. And when
that doesn't work, we
ask
the
Blessed
Mother to side with
us and influence her
Son against his will.
But God wants us to
be the winner from
the start! He always
wants what's best for us. Mary knew
this when she told the wine stewards, "Do whatever my Son tells
you."
Conflicts are not inherently bad.
Conflicts become sacred opportunities for wonderful solutions when we
entrust them to God. Mary trusted
that Jesus cared about the people at
the party. Jesus trusted that the Father cared about both the people
and his ministry. It was a win-win
situation.

Reflect & Discuss:

1. How do you feel when you lose
an argument? How hard do you
work at making the other person
lose?
2. Will you trust God to take good
care of you even if you feel like
a loser?
3. Describe a conflict (a hypothetical one or a real one from your
past or present) and suggest an
ideal solution. Is anyone a loser
in this scenario?
4. If you were to truly trust God,
what might he do to resolve the
conflict so that everyone benefits?

Holy Family Catholic Academy organized a Christmas drive for Holy Family Home
Orphanage in Osaka, Japan. Students from National Junior Honor Society were
responsible for organizing and packaging 135 gift bags for the children living at the
orphanage. The gift bags were hand delivered to the children by Wolfhound soldiers
from the 27th Infantry Unit from Schofield Barracks. The Sisters at the orphanage
mailed us these beautiful photos showing the happy children with their special bags.
