CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Modeling
Curves
2D Bounding Box
Users can now pick a 2D contour and CimatronE
finds the tightest square, circle, or enclosing
polygon that completely surrounds the contour.
The function has various uses, including:
Punch design: Helps users to decide how to
cut the die shoe, especially in situations where
there is more than one trimming punch in a
small area.
Manufacturing: Helps designers or NC
programmers choose the smallest possible
stock.
Benefits:

Here the user has chosen to control the orientation

angle of the bounding box. The automatic option
chooses the optimal angle for the smallest possible
bounding box.

Speeds up efficient punch design

Reduces scrap and shorten machining times
Increases automation

Here the user has automatically created the smallest

possible enclosing polygon.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Intermediate Curve
This new feature allows users to find the
intermediate curve(s) between two curves. A
special parameter allows users to choose how
many intermediate curves to create.
This feature may be used to define split direction,
place components on a part, and guide the path or
orientation of the tool during NC programming.
Benefits:
Avoids manual work

The parting line (dark blue curve) was determined by

the mid-curve of the two light blue curves.

The location of the vacuum holes and centerline of

the vacuum slots of the fixture were defined using the
Intermediate-Curve feature.

Here the Intermediate-Curve feature improves the

NC programming experience:
The 3D runner (left) was machined by a ball-nose
cutter along the mid-curve of the runners edges.
Using the curve to guide the cutter and not the
surfaces is faster and results in a smother toolpath.
The orange fillets in the screw (right) are machined
with a conic ball-nose cutter. The blue mid-curve of
the purple and light blue contours controls the
cutters 5-axis orientation.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Circle Features Improvements

Improvements to the circle features make it easy to
create multiple circles at the same time.
There are also additional ways to create circles,
including an option to create a circle by selecting
the center and an additional point.
Benefits:
Easier to create circles

The user has created multiple circles in the same

operation.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Unmerge Wires
Users often merge several contours in order to
perform extrusions and other actions
simultaneously.
Now, users can also unmerge wires that have
been merged, allowing for extrusions and other
actions to be performed on each contour,
separately.
Benefits:
Better user experience

While these three shapes were originally merged as

one, the user has unmerged the shapes to perform
separate operations on each one.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Approximate to Lines and Arcs for Wire EDM

The Approximate to Lines and Arcs feature allows
users to prepare geometry for cutting with Wire
EDM machines.
An enhancement means this feature creates a
smoother line with fewer sections. The feature also
includes an option to avoid sharp corners.
When necessary, users can specify the minimum
radius of the arcs, to accommodate limitations of
some Wire EDM machines.
Benefits:
Smoother geometry preparation for Wire EDM

The Approx. to Lines and Arcs feature has been

performed on the same curve in CimatronE 9 (left)
and CimatronE 10 (right). The red dots indicate
connection breaks. The results in CimatronE 10 are
much smoother.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Extend Curve Enhancement

The extend curve function lengthens a curve based
on its trajectory.
In the new version, users have the option of
defining the extension as a new, separate curve.
Among other advantages, this allows users to
measure the angle between two curves at the point
where they intersect.
Benefits:
Increases flexibility

The following curves have been created using the

Same Curve option that was available in previous
versions. The curve and its extension are one entity.

Users can also choose the Separate Curve option to

ensure that the orange and green entities will remain
separate.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Composite Curves Additional Functionality

In previous versions, users could add a radius to a
contour from inside the composite curve feature.
Now users can also add a chamfer, in the same
simple convenient way.
Benefits:
Facilitates better user experience

The user has added chamfers of various different

dimensions to the blue contour, using the Composite
Curve feature.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Faces
More Accurate Trim and Split Features
The Trim and Split features now generate higher
quality results (with less tolerant geometry).
Benefits:
Generates higher quality design

10

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Sharp Corner
This new modeling tool saves time and improves
quality when creating parting surfaces.
Sharp Corner converts a rounded corner into a
straight, sharp corner in one click. This means
external parting surfaces are easier to create, and
that extensions create fewer additional entities.
Benefits:
Faster, easier creation of parting surfaces
Better quality parting surfaces

The Sharp Corner feature was used to prepare the

parting surfaces.

11

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Fillet Enhancements
There are various enhancements to the fillet
feature, including:
Users now have the option to perform a
surface chamfer as part of the fillet feature.
Quality and performance of fillet creation is
even better, so that users can handle complex
geometries quickly and effectively.
Benefits:
Additional flexibility
Better quality results

12

The new Surface Chamfer operation, which is

included in the Surface-Fillet feature, is used to
chamfer surfaces.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Stitch and Heal Enhancements

When performing Stitch and Heal operations, users
can now achieve better results, and maintain the
colors of the original object.
Users also have increased user control over the
tolerance between objects (Max. Gap).
Benefits:
Better quality design
Smoother data import process

13

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Extend Planar and Cone Same Face

When extending faces, the system usually
preserves the original faces, adding extra faces for
the extension.
The Same Face option allows users to produce
smoother extensions with fewer faces by extending
the original faces themselves where possible.
Additionally, the function makes it easier to create
simpler parting surfaces.
Benefits:
Faster design

The following orange surfaces will be extended to the

blue contour.

Simpler parting surfaces

This option, which preserves the integrity of the

original faces and adds new faces to create the
extension, was available in previous versions.

The Same Face option allows users to achieve

smoother results by ignoring the original faces.

14

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Composite Face Maintain Gaps

The composite face feature enables users to
create one single face from a sequence of smooth
faces.
When there is a gap between two surfaces, the
systems tolerance settings may lead to the gaps
being lost after the feature has been performed. A
new option to set the max. distance allows users to
maintain gaps that are supposed to exist.
Benefits:
Increased user control

The composite face operation is performed on the

following two faces.

In CimatronE 9 (green) the operation lost the gap

between the two surfaces; in CimatronE 10 (orange)
users are able to maintain the gap.

15

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Solid
Extrude Enhancements
Extrude enhancements provide increased flexibility
when extruding on both sides of a contour.
New functionality provides users with an additional
way to set an extrusions dimensions. Users can
now define the extrusions length by two
references, one on either side of the contour, and
by an offset from a reference.
Users can also assign different tapers to each side
of the contour.
Additionally, users can now extrude on open edges
of surfaces; this is especially useful when creating
parting surfaces.
Benefits:
Faster extrusions with greater user control
More flexible extrude feature

In the following case, the user has extruded by a

different draft angle on either side. On the orange
side the extrusion passes the reference by an offset
of 7 mm. On the green side, the extrusion misses the
reference by an offset of 4 mm.

16

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Taper Enhancements
Enhancements to the taper functions provide
additional flexibility and facilitate faster work. They
include:
Both Sides Users can now assign different
tapers to each side of a contour.
Split Faces Users can now taper a face on
two sides of a contour or plane without having
to split the face in a separate operation.
Keep Size at Bottom Level During mending,
tool makers often want to preserve the
dimensions at the base (bottom) of a tapered
area, while thinning the top. The taper feature
now enables this.

The user has tapered the face on both sides of the

contour without splitting the face in a separate
operation.

Preview Now includes wireframe before

lines, so that users can visualize the effect of
the taper even if its very small.
Mark (Color) Taper Faces Users keep track
of faces that have been tapered by
automatically changing their color, making it
easier to see where mending was already
performed.
Benefits:
Faster design/mending
Increased user control
Cleaner feature tree

In the preview above, the original geometry is

represented by dotted lines, so users can easily see
the effect of even the smallest taper operations.
The user also chose to Keep Size at Bottom Level,
which means the base dimensions of the geometry
stay the same, whereas the top area is now smaller.

17

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Fair on Solid
The fair feature, which allows users to smooth
geometries and also to convert surfaces to analytic
surfaces (within certain tolerances), now works on
solids as well as surfaces.
The advantages of performing the fair operation on
solids is that the area does notdisconnect from the
rest of the part as a result of tolerances, and users
maintain all the advantages of working with a
closed solid after the operation.
Benefits:
Quickly and effectively fair geometries

18

Nurbs

Cylinder

Before the Fair has been performed (left), the

selected surface is recognized as NURBS. After the
fair operation has been performed (right), the
selected surface is recognized as cylindrical. The
surface remains a part of the solid object.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Unbend Pipes
Users can now unbend pipes as part of the SolidUnbend feature.
Benefits:
Work faster with pipes

The above pipe has been unbent in both of the lower

two images.

19

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Additional Enhancements to Solid Functions

Additional enhancements of solid capabilities
include:
Pipe This feature can now be used as part of
Solid > Add and Solid > Remove operations in
addition to Solid > New operations.
Chamfer Define multiple chamfers with
different dimensions in the same operation.
Chamfer Define two distances for the same
chamfer.
Benefits:
Faster, more flexible work with solids

20

The chamfer was created by setting two offset

distances.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Sketcher
Sketching by Dimension
Sketching by Dimension is fully available for four
shapes: circle, rectangle, line, and ellipse.
This allows users to:

Place the shape on the sketch with preset

dimensions, as many times as required with
one click each time.

Choose whether additional similar shapes are

created with constraints (and related to the first
shape), or created with their own independent
dimensions.

Benefits:
Easier to sketch shapes
Preview dimension of a shape before you
place it

The squares were placed in three clicks. The second

two squares are constrained to the dimensions of the
first square.

Faster sketching of identical shapes

The squares above were also placed in three clicks.

Dimensions have been set independently for each
square.

21

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Drag Dimensions
Users can now alter the size of a shape by simply
dragging the dimension arrows.
Benefits:
Faster, easier work with the sketcher

By clicking on the arrow (currently highlighted in

green), users can drag the dimension as desired.
Dragging increments can be preset by the user.

22

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Sketcher Grid
The grid enables users to sketch items with
specific dimensions and locations in a
straightforward and easy way.
The grid can be used simply as a visual aid, or
users can choose to sketch based along its lines
using various snap options (e.g., snap to grid).
Users also have full control over the grid and can
set the distance between lines, as well as change
the grids appearance.
Benefits:
Easy to sketch shapes with specific
dimensions and locations

The grid has given the user an effective visual guide

for dimensions. The user has also used the Snap to
Grid option.

23

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Enter Sketcher by Reference Points

Users can specify a sketch-plane by selecting any
set of entities that define a plane (a combination of
points, lines, 2D curves, or a UCS axis).
Benefits:
Better user experience

The user has entered the sketcher by clicking on two

axes of a UCS.

24

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Better User Experience

Several additional upgrades improve the users
experience for work inside the sketcher, including:
Better performance in the sketcher when
working with complex parts or assemblies.
Delta Ensures that one or more points of a
sketched shape are at a specific distance (X,Y)
from another point.
Break Relations A new feature makes it
easy to break multiple relations with one click,
whether they are geometric, dimensional, or
external (between one or more shapes). Users
can also invoke the Close Points tool as part of
an external break relations operation.
During Add Reference or Add Geometry
operations, the sketcher now automatically
converts simple splines into an arc or line,
when possible, to make them easier to handle
(the conversion never strays from the
predefined tolerance).

Above the user has broken relations of the sketch in

one click.

Benefits:
Faster work
Better user experience

25

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Drafting
Faster Performance
Users can now work a lot faster when updating
views, or when creating new views using the Drive
View function.
Users can now create views up to 10 times faster
than in the previous version. The updating time of
views is also much faster.
This is especially important in projects with short
delivery time, where the drafting starts before the
design ends. In such projects, the views have to be
updated very frequently in some cases even
several times a day.
Now, users can spend less time waiting for the
updates.
Benefits:
Faster creation of views
Faster updating of views
Shorter delivery time

The top image shows the mold of a bumper, with

50,000 surfaces and 450 components. The image
below shows an 8-view drawing of that mold. This
drawing was created ten times faster in CimatronE
10 than in CimatronE 9.

26

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Drafting Templates
Users can now minimize repetitive work and
complete the drafting process more quickly with
detailed, more flexible drafting templates.
Enhancements allow users to:

Include a readymade Bill of Materials and/or

Table of Holes for specified views.

Adapt the template on-the-fly before each

project. Users can easily remove anything they
dont want to include in the template (entire
views, BOM or TOH tables, etc).

Include any sketch (with its dimensions) on

drafting documents.

Define ID numbers and LOH (Label of Holes)

annotations to show in the drafting document.

Store predefined sets inside the template

based on geometric types or color.

Benefits:
Faster drafting process
Avoid repetitive tasks
Ensure that draft layout is consistent for every
project

The new drafting template is shown above. The user

has control over which parts of a template to include
in a new draft.

27

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Increased Ability to Add Holes in Drafting Environment

When creating drafting documents and Table of
Holes (TOH), users can add extra holes on the fly.
This capability was available in previous versions,
but is now far more powerful.
Additional enhancements allow users to:
Create a TOH even if there are no holes in the
view, so that the user can add sketch holes.
Add sketch holes and fully define the type of
hole in order to include it in the TOH.
Select existing wireframe contours (points and
circles) and define them as sketch holes.
Preview the hole while defining its type.
Benefits:
Faster, more flexible work with holes during the
drafting process

28

The user has added and defined holes in the drafting

environment.

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Increased User Control over Content and Layout of TOH

Several enhancements make it easy for users to
create a more detailed Table of Holes, and include
more information in the Label of Holes annotations.
Users can now:
Create TOH templates in order to preset
layouts and choose fields. Users can either
modify the default template or add additional
templates.
Sort holes based on their location on the X or
Y axis.
Define additional columns in the TOH, and
include the text in those columns in LOH
annotations.
Manually edit the Z-start parameter (the Z end
parameter is automatically adjusted).
Include a visual indication of threads in the
TOH image, to ensure that holes with threads
are easily recognizable.

The user has added an additional column. In the X

column, holes have been sorted primarily by group
and then by X value.

Benefits:
Increased user control
Improved communication with NC
programming and quality control departments

Above is the visual indication of a thread which can

be added to the TOH image.

29

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Predefined Color for Dimensions and Symbols

In the new version, the ability to predefine colors
makes drafting easier to read and work with.
The system now enables users to define a color for
each type of dimension and each symbol in the
drafting environment. Symbols and dimensions
automatically receive a color based on their type.
Users can define separate colors for linear,
angular, diametric, and radial dimensions, as well
as for chamfers, arc lengths, and ordinates. Users
can also automatically assign colors to symbols in
the same way.
Benefits:
Easier to read and work with drafts

The user can predefine colors of both dimensions

and symbols.

30

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Dimensions Increased Accuracy

Dimension annotations can now include up to 6
digits after the decimal point to increase accuracy.
This is especially useful for users who work in
inches.
Benefits:
More accurate dimensions

Dimension annotations can now include up to 6 digits

after the decimal point.

31

33

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Catalogs
Catalog Rules (Add Rules)
When adding large numbers of catalog parts that
have similar geometries but varying dimensions,
specifying dimensions for each catalog part can be
time-consuming and repetitive.
In CimatronE 10.0, the system can now
automatically choose the most appropriate
dimensions for catalog parts based on a set of
predefined rules.
This is particularly useful for ejectors: users simply
place the ejectors, and then the system utilizes
preset rules to choose the catalog ejector with the
most appropriate dimensions for each ejector in a
single click.
The system can also use rules to select catalog
cooling items, punches, matrixes, screws, and
more.
Benefits:
Faster and more efficient work with large
amounts of catalog parts.
More powerful placement of ejectors, cooling
items, screws, and other catalog parts
More detailed BOM

34

The user has set rules to determine the lengths of

different catalog ejectors which will be used
depending on the geometry.

General CAD
Thread
Users will now benefit from more user friendly,
flexible threads. The new threads are displayed as
helical texture entities. The threads are far better at
adapting to changes in geometries (they do not go
through regeneration) and are far more stable.
Users are now able to do the following:
Work with new, more realistic representations
of threads.
Export threads to other CAD formats.
Place threads in places where they previously
could not be placed (see image).
Add chamfers without affecting the thread.
Easily change the surrounding geometry of the
thread (the thread adapts appropriately to the
change).
Enjoy a cleaner, more concise feature tree.
Benefits:
More straightforward work with threads
Easier to make changes to projects that
contain threads

40

Threads are now represented as above. Notice that

even though the far left hole is only partially

Parametric Import
Often, users work on projects that require the
creation of many features with identical geometries
but different dimensions.
The new Parametric Import option enables users to
create a library of geometric features, reuse each
one, and modify dimensions on-the-fly.
Users can also choose to merge the imported
geometry into an existing object, or to cut the
geometry, or both merge and cut.
Benefits:
Faster, simpler design by reusing geometries
Increased user control
Simpler, cleaner feature tree

pierce points:
The point at which a line or axis and a datum
plane cross.
The point at which a curve would have crossed
other geometry, if it had been extended.
Benefits:
Better user experience

Users can now select the pierce point where a line or

axis and a datum plane cross.

45

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Conflict Solver
Error Locator (Visual Error Information)
When a modeling operation is not successful, the
problematic geometry that causes this can often be
fixed in a straightforward way. The challenge is to
find the problematic geometry in the first place.
Now theres an easy solution: the Conflict Solver
shows users exactly which geometry caused the
modeling operation to fail, so that users can quickly
fix the problem and move on.
Benefits:
Easier to identify errors
Faster design process

The Conflict Solver highlights the geometry that is

causing the error (red area).

46

CimatronE 10 - CAD for Tooling

Regeneration Conflicts Highlight Leaf

When regeneration conflicts arise, users no longer
have to browse through the feature tree to find the
problem. The system now locates and highlights
the problematic feature, even if its hidden under
another feature.
This is particularly useful for assemblies, where
problematic features can be hard to find.
Benefits:
Faster regeneration process

The system locates and highlights the problematic

feature that resulted in a regeneration conflict.

Cut Manager for Sub-Assemblies

CimatronE speeds up tool design by automatically
creating pockets for added parts (such as screws,
inserts, lifters, and ejectors).
The Cut Manager gives users full control over this
process, allowing them to override automatic
cutting settings and decide where to cut and where
not to; users are never stuck in cases where
automatic processes fall short of whats required.
The Cut Manager is now effective for added subassemblies (such as sliders) as well. This allows
users to decide, part by part, where to cut and
where not to.
Benefits:
Increased user control

Forming Operations
Springback Deform
This feature allows users to deform a model based
on start and end conditions. It can dramatically
speed up and simplify modeling needed for
springback compensation.
Often, sheet metal parts require over bending to
compensate for elasticity of the metal. Using a
combination of professional experience and FEA
tools, users determine the extent of the over
bending. Users then have to model the forming
shape as necessary.
This process takes hours when done manually.
The new Springback Deform tool allows users to
perform deformation of the forming shape in
minutes.
This feature is available as an optional add-on.

The user can set an unlimited number of target points

(end conditions) for the deformation, and can also
define certain areas as static.

Benefits:
Handles springback modeling effectively

Here we see the original part (start conditions) and

the deformed part (end conditions) one on top of the
other after the deformation operation has
successfully been performed.

Blank on Binder Control Tipping Direction

The Blank on Binder and Auto Blank on Binder
features allow users to unfold freeform shapes
onto 3D geometries.
The results are based on the tipping direction,
which the system identifies automatically.
In this version, users can see the automatically
generated tipping direction before performing a
blanking operation. If necessary, users can modify
the tipping direction manually to achieve the best
possible results.

Here the user has manually defined the correct

tipping direction.

Benefits:
Increased user control
Better results

This has resulted in a successful blank on binder

operation.

top picture is automatically flattened (bottom picture).

53

CimatronE 10 - Die Design

Skin > Overcome Sharp Corner Enhancements

Working on complex sheet metal parts requires
using a skin (one side of the sheet metal). The skin
function automatically selects all relevant faces.
However, there are cases where the part includes
sharp corners. In these cases, CimatronE
automatically continues the selection beyond the
sharp corner to complete the operation.
In the new version, the feature is now more
powerful, highlighting the correct areas for even
the most complex parts.

Benefits:
Reduces human error by preventing skipping
selection of some surfaces
Saves time by eliminating manual selection

In the above image, the user selects the Overcome

Sharp Corners option to automatically continue the
selection beyond the sharp corners.

54

CimatronE 10 - Die Design

Strip Design
Improved Strip Design Process
The Die Design solution provides a flexible
environment in which to create a 3D strip quickly
and accurately.
In the new version, the strip design environment is
more intuitive, with the flexibility to go through the
process your way.
The Strip Design Guide includes two new tools to
help users establish carriers and define the punch
boundaries in a straightforward way.
The improved process makes the entire system
easier to use and ensures complete associativity
for efficient editing.
Benefits:
Easier to create and edit the die strip

The Carrier Sketcher, and Punch Boundaries buttons

have been added to the guide, making it easier for
users to define and edit these entities.

55

CimatronE 10 - Die Design

Insert Forming Shape

Producing a line of forming shapes is a basic initial
step in the die design process.
The main advantage of the forming shape line is
that there is full associativity throughout, so that
changes made to one forming shape affect all
subsequent forming shapes.
Sometimes users finish designing a forming shape
line and then realize they need an extra forming
shape in the middle of the line. Previously, users
would have to add forming shapes that are not
associative, or even start from scratch.
CimatronE now provides the flexibility to easily
insert an additional forming shape, while
maintaining full associativity in the forming shape
line.
This means that inserted forming shapes behave
as if they were part of the original forming shape
line.
Benefits:
More flexible design of forming shapes
Easier and much faster to make corrections
and additions
More convenient forming shape design

56

The user has created four forming shapes, and has

now decided to insert an additional forming shape.

1A

The additional forming shape is inserted between the

first and second forming shapes, and the forming line
maintains complete associativity throughout.

Tool Design
Trimming Punch Creation
With these new enhancements, trimming punches can be created more quickly and efficiently.

Accelerated Creation of Multiple Punches

Users can now instantly create and place several
punches at the same time.
The familiar trimming punch feature, which allows
users to design trimming punches in one click, now
enables users to select several contours at the
same time.
The system automatically creates the punches
according to the users specifications, cuts through
plates to position the punches, and establishes
dimensions of the matrix, die backing plates, and
die shoes.
Benefits:
Faster creation of multiple trimming punches
Reduces repetitive work

In the Trimming Punch feature the user simply

selects four different punches to create the punches
and their respective pockets inside the die tool.

57

CimatronE 10 - Die Design

More Fastener Shapes

The trimming punch feature can automatically
create fasteners of several shapes.
In addition to L shaped fasteners, which were
available in the previous version, the feature now
supports fasteners with circular edges, and even
fasteners with edges based on chained contours.
More powerful options for fasteners allow users to
create a larger variety of punches, without any
modeling.
Benefits:
Fasteners of many shapes handled quickly
and automatically
More convenient design environment

The chained edge fastener shape is new in

CimatronE 10, and its wedge dimensions can be
defined as necessary.

58

CimatronE 10 - Die Design

Split Matrixes
Die designers sometimes choose to create a
matrix from two or more components, in order to
simplify the manufacturing process.
The Trimming Punch feature can now recognize
more than one component for each matrix. The
system automatically creates the defined tapered
cuts in all of the matrixes.
Benefits:
Quickly and efficiently creates split matrixes
Avoids manual work

The matrix above is made up of two separate

components.

expenses of die components such as punches,
based on dimensions of the stock. There are two
categories of costs for such components:
Machining Costs and Material Costs.
When defining the stock for Machining Cost
calculations, users can now:
Define the stock by volume (this option is also
available for calculating Material Cost).
Define the stock as rectangular or circular.
Add an offset value to the stock volume.
Additionally, users can also add fixed costs to the
Machining Costs.
Benefits:
Improved cost calculation
Increased user control
Increased flexibility

64

The improved Expense Details dialog offers more

options when defining the stock.

Mold Design

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Faster Parting
In the new version of CimatronE, Parting is faster and more reliable, and includes new analysis tools.
The enhancements to the Parting process allow users to work with better quality CAD models in the
assembly environment and thus save up to 30% of overall design time as well as avoid mistakes and
apply changes more effectively.
During the parting process, QuickSplit and other parting tools can now utilize solid body information
(from closed and open solids). This does not mean the part has to be a true watertight solid body.
Even open solids contain valuable information that is now utilized by CimatronE. This part topology
provides CimatronE with information about adjacent surfaces, and enables the system to provide
various benefits for work with all solids, even those that are problematic and contain faults. Such
benefits include:
Better, more comprehensive splitting and analysis tools
Increased automation during parting and throughout the tool design process

Additionally, new analysis tools in the parting environment can help users dramatically shorten the
mold tool design process (in the assembly environment), allow customers to handle more complex
jobs effectively, and shorten the overall delivery times of projects. These tools help users to increase
the quality of active parts by identifying and helping to repair faults (gaps and mismatches) in solid
objects. Active parts that have fewer faults result in:
Faster, easier modeling and tool design
Avoiding mistakes
Successful regeneration
Earlier start for manufacturing of the mold (NC programming, Milling, Wire EDM) because pockets
for inserts or lifters can be added to the core and cavity even before exporting parting surfaces.
Electrode design can also start earlier.

69

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

QuickSplit on Solid
QuickSplit on Solid (for both closed and open solids) includes three additional QuickSplit modes,
offering two . main advantages:
Faster, more effective preliminary split
Analysis tools to speed up mold tool design (by evaluating parting surfaces)

Preliminary Split (By Draft Angles Only)

QuickSplit on Solid assigns parting directions to
surfaces in a far more reliable way, and helps
users locate areas of undercut.
The increased reliability is because QuickSplit can
now use topology (solid data from both completely
closed and open solids) to assign QuickSplit
directions accurately based on draft angles.
Because QuickSplit on Solid is extremely reliable,
users no longer have to spend time manually
assigning QuickSplit directions to surfaces that
were not assigned automatically.
Any unassigned surfaces are real undercut
surfaces, and require mending or lifters/sliders/etc.
Users can now use QuickSplit to locate these
surfaces.

The green dots represent very small surfaces. In

CimatronE 9, these surfaces were not assigned
automatically to the relevant QuickSplit directions.

In addition, the Preliminary Split tool allows users

to control the draft angle on which the analysis is
based, making it very useful for designers of
rubber molds and other non-standard plastic
molds.

Benefits:
Faster assigning of faces to QuickSplit
directions
Less manual work
Increased flexibility for designers of rubber
molds and other non-standard molds
Sliders and lifters identified during the early
stages of the design
Easier to identify areas that need mending

70

QuickSplit on Solid successfully assigns all faces

based on draft angles, except where there are
undercuts and a lifter is necessary.

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Evaluate Parting Surfaces

This option allows users to evaluate the integrity of
the parting surfaces in terms of how well they are
aligned with the parting line.
There are two QuickSplit modes that offer this:
Analysis By Draft Angles and By Parting
Surfaces This mode checks that parting faces
match their corresponding QuickSplit directions
and it identifies places where the parting surfaces
are incomplete, making it easier for users to
address any issues.
Analysis By Parting Surfaces Only This mode
is the final check of parting surface integrity. If the
check is successful, then the active skin (smoothly
joined QuickSplit Faces and Parting Surfaces) is
watertight and can be used to create solid active
parts, saving a considerable amount of time in the
assembly environment.

Here the user has used the Analysis By Draft

Angles and By Parting Surfaces mode, and found
an area where internal parting surfaces are missing.

Benefits:
Higher quality CAD models
Option to ensure 100% solid active parts
Easier to locate and repair faults

Here the user has activated the Analysis By Parting

Surfaces Only mode. The analysis was successful:
surfaces underneath the parting line remain green,
while surfaces above the parting line have been
selected. This means the user is working with a
watertight active skin that can be used to create solid
active parts.

71

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Open Edge Analysis

The new Open Edge Analysis allows users to evaluate open edge faults (mismatches and gaps),
making it easier to locate faults and repair solids. Repairing solids partially or completely is not
required, but often leads to massive time savings in later stages of the mold design.
The Analysis feature includes a large range of different analysis options. The following 3 sections
describe the tools main functions:
Evaluation and Mending of Imported Parts
Analysis of Parting Surfaces and QuickSplit Faces
Analysis to Define the Parting Line

Evaluation and Mending of Imported Parts

Mold Makers often work with imported parts that
contain small, hard to locate faults (usually
mismatches or gaps between surfaces). The Open
Edge Analysis has two main advantages for those
working with such parts:
Full evaluation (by object) of faults in the entire
object Enables users to immediately
understand the part they are working on and
locate problematic areas.
Local evaluation (by selection) The analysis
tools can show which faults the user has to
mend in specific areas, in order to stitch
successfully on the first try. This can save
hours of stitching trial and error.

Benefits:
Immediate evaluation of imported objects
Simpler and faster to identify areas that need
mending, and evaluate post-mending
No surprises later on

72

In the above part, the areas marked in yellow and

pink contain faults. The user can evaluate the quality
of the mending of the imported part.

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Analysis of Parting Surfaces and QuickSplit Faces

The Open Edge Analysis helps users to improve
the quality of active parts from within the parting
environment, thus speeding up the entire mold
design process.
The analysis enables free selection in specific local
areas of parting surfaces and QuickSplit faces to
identify faults.
This includes the following faults:
Within the QuickSplit faces only (all the faces
of the part that are allocated to one QuickSplit
direction).
Between the QuickSplit faces and parting
surfaces.
Between the parting surfaces only.

The user can see clearly that there are several open
edges between the QuickSplit faces and the parting
surfaces that require attention.

In areas that include both QuickSplit faces and

parting surfaces based on free selection.
The analysis can make it easier for users to ensure
completely solid active parts in the parting
environment, and to ensure that work in the
assembly environment is faster and easier.
Benefits:
Better quality CAD models of active parts
Option to ensure 100% solid active parts while
still in parting environment
Easier to spot faults
Easier to repair faults
Faster parting process
Faster mold tool design process

73

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Analysis to Define the Parting Line

This analysis helps users to ensure the parting
lines definition is error-free, so that there are no
delays in later stages of the mold design.
In order for the parting line to be correctly defined,
no single surface of the part can spread across
both sides of the parting line. Users have to split
surfaces of the part at the parting line.
This means users are now able to create parting
surfaces in the optimal places, without considering
the edges of the QuickSplit faces. At a later stage,
they can adapt face edges to the parting line.
Benefits:
No more split-related delays in the mold
assembly environment
Faster, smoother parting design process

74

The Free Edges option of the Open Edge Analysis

tools checks for surfaces that need to be split. In the
image above, the gray surface is a parting surface.
The green surface crosses both sides of the parting
surface, and therefore needs to be split.

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Automatically Assign Parting Attributes to Parting Surfaces

In previous versions, users had to assign
QuickSplit directions to parting surfaces manually.
Now the system can do this automatically in one
click.
Assigning parting surface attributes helps users to
visualize the shape of each QuickSplit direction
with its parting surfaces, and simplifies selection of
surfaces for each direction.
Benefits:
Faster parting process
Repetitive manual tasks are no longer
necessary

Parting attributes of all of the parting surfaces have

automatically been assigned to the correct QuickSplit
direction.

75

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Extrude on Parting Surfaces

This enhancement allows users to save time when
creating internal parting surfaces.
Users can now extrude on the edges of surfaces.
Whereas complex internal parting surfaces used to
require many surface operations, they can now be
done faster and more easily in a single operation.

Benefits:
Faster, better quality parting surfaces

This operation used to require sketching a composite

curve, and then performing sweep, trim, bounded,
and stitch. Now the user simply performs one extrude
operation.

76

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Cut Active on Solid

Cut Active on Solid allows users to achieve a much
higher quality of active part in the assembly
environment. As such, this is the point at which any
repair work in the parting environment starts to pay
off.
Users can complete parting with an active skin
(smoothly joined QuickSplit faces and parting
surfaces see image). Cut Active cuts the stock
(cavity or core) with the active skin in a solid
operation. This means the core and cavity are
created as either open or closed solids, without the
need for a stitch operation.
Whats more, the Cut Active feature allows users to
cut cavities and cores that already have holes and
pockets. This means designers can send blocks to
be drilled, milled, or go through wire EDM before
they have established the parting line! This can
shorten delivery time significantly.

This is an active skin (smoothly joined QuickSplit

faces and parting surfaces). In this case the user has
repaired all faults in the active skin, ensuring that it is
completely watertight.

Benefits:
Shorter mold tool design
No surprises later in the process
Higher quality CAD models
Shorter overall delivery times

The user has already created several holes and

pockets in the cavity and core, so that they can be
sent for wire EDM and drilling at an early stage.

Because the active skin is watertight, the Cut Active

operation results in closed solid active parts (cavity
and core). Notice that the cut is successful even
though there are pockets and holes in the stock.

77

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Mold Assembly
Insert Design

Extract Insert by 2D Contour

The new Extract Insert feature enables users to
create inserts by defining a 2D contour.
The 3D geometry of the insert is automatically
created, and a pocket is created where the 2D
contour was drawn. The insert is created as a new
part in the assembly.
Benefits:
Faster insert design
Top to bottom: The user selects a contour around the
geometry and an insert is automatically created
based on the 3D geometry.

78

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Insert Application
This application provides a simple automated way
to create inserts, and allows users to establish
pockets in the core and cavity at a very early stage
in design, so that time consuming wire EDM and
milling operations can begin on the first day of
design.
Users simply choose an insert type from a
commercial or user-defined catalog and place the
insert over the desired QuickSplit surfaces of the
core and cavity. The placed inserts are
automatically cut and the system creates the
relevant pockets in the core and cavity.
The feature simultaneously creates several inserts
at the same time.

This insert was automatically created using the insert

application.

Benefits:
Faster creation of multiple inserts
Early start for manufacturing process
Shorter delivery time

Multiple inserts can be placed in the same operation.

79

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Lifter Design
Lifter Application
This application provides a simple automated way
to create lifters, and allows users to establish
pockets in the core and cavity at a very early stage
in design, so that time-consuming wire EDM and
milling operations can begin on the first day of
design.
Users simply choose an lifter type from a
commercial or user-defined catalog and place the
lifter over the desired QuickSplit surfaces of the
core and cavity. The placed lifters are
automatically cut, and the system creates the
relevant pockets in the core and cavity.
Benefits:
Faster creation of lifters
Easy editing of lifters
Better quality CAD models of lifters

Cooling Enhancements
There are several enhancements to cooling
design, including:
Intersection curves in visual analysis, offering a
more precise, efficient and quick detection of
interferences between the cooling object and
its surrounding components.
A dedicated Cooling Cut Manager similar to
the Cut Manager available in Add operations,
offering better control over components cut by
cooling objects.
A new Ball End cooling tip type.
Individual control over cooling tip types and
size to save time and manual work.
Benefits:
Faster cooling system design
Better user experience

The system located a collision with an ejector, and

displays a red intersection curve in the area where
the collision occurs.

The system now allows users to add ball end cooling

tips, as well as drilled end cooling tips.

81

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Mold Setup Enhancements

Mold Setup, which allows users to pre-define
various parameters to be used later for creating
relations, is now more flexible and user-friendly.
Enhancements to the tool include:
Ability to add an unlimited amount of
parameters.
Ability to arrange the order of parameters by
dragging.
Benefits:
Increased user control
Better user experience

The user drags the CavityInsert Y parameter to a

higher row. Users can now add unlimited parameters
to the Mold Setup and arrange the order of
parameters by dragging.

82

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

ECO
Enhancements to the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process offer a smoother, simpler way of
handling and documenting changes to a project, and include support for multiple changes.

ECO Documentation
The Documentation feature allows users to track
every ECO. Users can now scroll through a list of
change orders and review before and after
screenshots, along with a description of the
changes and other details. It also allows users to
link applicable documents and models to each
ECO record and quickly access them.
ECO Documentation is the ideal quick reference
tool, and can help to evaluate costs, present
changes to customers, and keep organized
records.
Benefits:
Easier ECO quoting and cost estimates
Better organized records
Improved communication with customers

The ECO Documentation tool allows users to keep

records of all changes that occur during a project.

83

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Flexible ECO Process

In the new version, CimatronE offers users the
flexibility to choose between two ways of
implementing changes.
Users can apply changes to the work part, and
maintain complete associativity throughout the
project, or apply changes to active parts for faster
results.
When working with simpler molds and dealing with
changes during the early stages of mold design,
users will usually prefer to apply changes to the
work part.
When dealing with changes at the later stages of
mold design, especially if the mold is complex,
users will often choose to apply changes directly to
the active parts.
The system now offers a convenient guide to allow
straightforward access to either method.
Benefits:
Increased flexibility
Easier and faster implementation of changes

84

The new ECO guide and the Update Active Parts

process.

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Analysis for Multiple ECO Changes

Most projects include several ECO changes.
CimatronE 10 now fully supports any comparison
between versions of the part (e.g., comparing the
8th version of the part with the 7th version of a part);
results are accurate, comprehensive, and easy to
interpret.
This makes it easier and faster to accommodate
multiple ECOs.
Benefits:
Easier and faster implementation of changes

85

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Apply Changes to Active Parts (Update Active Parts)

Users often have to apply an ECO change at a late
stage in the mold design process.
The Update Active Parts tool allows users to apply
the changes directly to the active parts (core,
cavity, etc).
The process works in three stages. First, the
current master part is compared to the new model
to obtain the old and new faces. Then, all old faces
in all active parts can be deleted simultaneously.
Finally, the new faces are split between the active
parts and directly exported.
While this option does compromise associativity, it
allows users to process changes very quickly and
efficiently. It is especially useful when users have
reached a very advanced stage of a complex
project. It also enables users to implement
changes to active parts, even if they are no longer
connected to the work part.

First stage Compare new and old masters.

Second stage Delete all old faces in all active parts.

Benefits:
Additional flexibility
Avoids regeneration

Third stage Split the new faces among the active

parts.

86

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

ECO Relocate Tool

Sometimes, when users receive an updated part,
the orientation of the part changes. The Relocate
tool allows users to quickly and efficiently place the
updated part in a position where it properly
overlaps the original part.
The tool can be used while comparing the new and
old master, while updating the Work Part, or while
creating a Diff Part.
Benefits:
Additional flexibility

The original part and the ECO were received with

different orientations.

The gray and yellow versions of the part now

completely overlap after the Relocate tool was used.

87

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

QuickCompare Enhancements
The QuickCompare analysis now allows users to
understand engineering changes faster and more
confidently, by displaying analysis results in a
clearer way (see images).
In addition, the tools analysis is now more
accurate and reliable.
Benefits:
Easier to understand changes
More reliable analysis

CimatronE 9 QuickCompare: Red indicates surfaces

in the original model that have changed; blue
surfaces are from the new model. While the area of
change is very clear, the actual change itself is hard
to understand.

CimatronE 10 QuickCompare: Here the system

displays the red and blue coloring only on the
surfaces that have moved, making the change much
clearer.

88

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Moldex Mold Flow Analysis Add-On

Mold designers can now simulate and analyze the
injection molding process from within CimatronE.
This enables users to ensure optimal placement of
injection points, and increase the quality of the
manufactured part.
The flow analysis tool displays a full 3D
visualization of the molding process, providing the
inner temperature and pressure of the cavity.
CimatronE users can evaluate the welding line, air
traps, flow balance, cooling time, the number of
gates needed, and the location of the gates.
A report generator enables users to provide
relevant feedback to their customers.

Benefits:

This report, created from inside CimatronE, estimates

and provides visual analysis of various different
variables. This screenshot shows the time it takes for
the molten plastic to reach different areas of the part.

Quoting plays a crucial role in keeping a tool shop
successful. Accurate estimates are essential in
order to remain competitive and profitable.
The MoldQuote Generator application helps mold
makers achieve more accurate quotations by using
project details, which are available in CimatronE
MoldDesign, as well as cost-related details, which
are set by the mold maker based on experience.
Quotes can be customized based on templates
(including the company logo), and are generated in
PDF, Excel, or HTML.

Benefits:
Increased control over pricing and profit
margins
Professional looking quotes

The MoldQuote Generator helps mold makers

achieve more accurate quotations and generate
professional quoting sheets.

90

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Electrode Enhancements
Auto-Contour Improvements
The Auto-Contour feature, which automatically
detects the contour of an electrode, is now far
more powerful and robust.
This results in faster work and reduces the need
for manual intervention, especially when working
with templates.
Benefits:
Eliminates the need for lengthy manual design
operations
Increases the success rate of automated
electrode creation

The user has already designed a simple electrode for

this part. Now, the user wants to create a complex
electrode for the area with the crossing slots.

Faster delivery of electrodes

These are the burning surfaces of the new electrode.

Even though the orange capping surfaces were
manually created to close the gaps made by the
crossing slots, the blue contour was automatically
created.

The complex electrode was automatically created by

using the simple electrode as a template.

91

CimatronE 10 - Mold Design

Renumber Electrodes
This feature allows users to ensure electrodes
have consecutive numbers. As well as refreshing
the numbers of electrodes, the feature also allows
users to add a prefix and suffix to multiple
electrodes at the same time.
Benefits:
Better organized electrode design and
manufacturing process

The Renumber Electrodes feature allows users to

give electrodes new names which include
consecutive numbers, as well as a standard prefix
and suffix.

NC General

CimatronE 10 - NC General

The SuperBox Productivity Acceleration Device

The SuperBox is a plug and play device that
automatically offloads NC calculation tasks from all
CimatronE seats in a network, thereby freeing up
resources of individual work stations.
As a result, users find their personal computers run
faster, and they can work better on their current
projects, or work on many projects at the same
time. Many users also find that their toolpath
calculations are accelerated, depending on their
current hardware.
This is a first-of-its-kind appliance, combining
hardware and software, and only requires a power
outlet and a network connection within the
customer premises.
Benefits:
More productive NC programming
Faster calculations
The SuperBox plugs into an existing network and is
immediately recognized by CimatronE NC seats. The
user continues to work on the current project or a
new one, but the procedure is offloaded to the
SuperBox, leaving the computers resources
completely free so the user can work faster and more
efficiently.

95

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Background Calculations
NC programmers can now complete projects a lot
faster.
In CimatronE 10, the system executes calculations
in the background, allowing the user to continue
working uninterrupted on the same part without
wasting time.
While calculations are running users can:
Start work on the next procedure.
Verify, simulate, and generate g-code for
existing procedures.
Make changes to the geometry in the CAD
environment.
Switch to other CimatronE projects and other
applications.
Benefits:
Higher productivity
Better user experience

While the user continues to work on this project, the

computer calculates 10 other procedures. Each time
a procedure is calculated, the user can check and
verify the toolpath while other calculations continue to
run.

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Cutters and Holders

New Cutter and Holder Library

CimatronEs new cutter and holder libraries offer an organized, powerful working environment, as well
as the ability to create strong, centralized libraries and import catalogs from major suppliers.

New Cutter Library and New Separate Holder Library

CimatronE 10 provides a new cutter library and a
brand new holder library.
The new libraries enable users to browse, sort,
filter, and search through available cutters and
holders.
The libraries interface also allows for easy editing
and includes management options such as a
Remove Duplicate option that searches and
deletes identical copies of existing cutters.
Benefits:
More powerful and flexible work environment

There are now separate cutter and holder libraries

with a completely improved user interface.

Better organized cutter and holder libraries

The holder and cutter libraries can retrieve cutters

and holders from NC files, NC templates, drill
sequences, and designated files.

97

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Centralized Libraries
Manufacturers can now build centralized cutter and
holder libraries which can be shared on the server,
so that all Cimatron users in the company are
working with the same standard tools and holders.
NC programmers, tool room personnel, and shop
floor operators share the same up-to-date data
throughout the organization.
The centralized libraries can be viewed by all and
managed by authorized users (including viewer
seats).
Users can also maintain personal libraries, and
access both their own libraries, and the companys
libraries, side by side.
Benefits:
More efficient, organized work environment
Improved communication across the company
Standardization across the company

98

Both of these seats can access the cutters and

holders from a centralized library (on the network), or
they can use the cutters and holders stored locally on
their own computers.

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Manage Multiple Libraries

The new structure of holder and cutter libraries can
hold within it any number of sub-libraries. This
means that users can toggle between centralized
libraries, libraries shared over the network, and
personal libraries.
This also provides users with the flexibility to
maintain separate libraries for different types of
jobs, or for different materials, or machines.
Users can also share and exchange libraries easily
over a network, or even by email.

Benefits:
More powerful and flexible work environment
Better organized cutter and holder libraries
Better communication between departments
Standardization across the company

The user has created separate holder libraries for

different machines.
There are also separate cutter libraries for different
materials.

99

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Cutter Table Enhancements

Improvements to the cutter table, which operates
within NC files, provide a flexible working
environment and include powerful management
capabilities.
Examples of enhancements to the cutter table
include:
Cutters and holders are separate entities and
are assembled in the cutter table.
New parameters specify the grip length and
the full cutter length.
Option to manage tools within the machines
magazine.
Customizable fields with filters, and sort
options.
Relation between machining parameters: Vc,
Spin, Fz, Feed, and No. of Teeth.
Benefits:
Increased user control
Better organized and customized work
environment
Fewer mistakes by using the companys
standard holders

Any Shaped Cutter

Users can now program machining for revolving
tools of any shape. This is useful in both 2.5 axis
and 5-axis profiling operations.
The simulator can also calculate and display the
real material removal of the non-standard cutter,
and represents the cutter visually in simulations.
Benefits:
Increased flexibility
Increased user control
Real life material removal simulation
Machining with this non-standard cutter has been
programmed using the Any Cutter option in which
any revolved contour can be defined as a cutter.

101

CimatronE 10 - NC General

External Mass Editing in Excel

Users can now import and export entire libraries of
cutters of holders into (and out of) CimatronE using
Microsoft Excel.
As well as facilitating mass creation of tools, this
function can be useful when users want to edit
many tools at the same time: When users work
with the same tools for different materials, the
system has to recognize different machining
condition parameters (e.g., feed, spin Vc, Fz).
Users can use the Excel import and export options
to adapt these parameters in Excel, and thus avoid
feeding the information manually.
Additionally, users can use the export features to
keep records of available tools.
Benefits:
Faster programming
Increased standardization

102

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Contour Enhancements
Machining Inside Nested Contours
This enhancement shortens and simplifies
programming by allowing users to perform
machining that previously required two or more
procedures in one single procedure.
Nested contours are contours that lie entirely within
an outer contour. Previously users had to program
separate procedures in order to machine inside
such contours. Now these areas can be machined
in the same procedure.
This is useful in many cases (see images), but also
massively simplifies engraving by enabling users to
machine the area that surrounds the letters and
areas inside letters (such as A, B, D, etc) in the
same procedure.
Benefits:
Faster, simpler NC programming
Fewer procedures necessary

In CimatronE 9 users had to program two procedures

to machine all the area inside the contours.

Easier text engraving

In CimatronE 10, all the machining can be done in

one easy-to-program procedure.

103

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Immediate Preview and Other Enhancements

For many procedures, users decide which areas
will be machined by picking contours.
Users can now preview the areas that will be
machined, while they are selecting contours. This
avoids mistakes and confusion, especially when
working with nested contours (see previous page).
Additionally, enhancements in the user interface
make it easier to define the machining areas
quickly and clearly.
Benefits:
Easier and faster to define machining areas
Users can now check the machining contours before any
machining takes place. In this case, the user can
immediately spot a mistake here no machining takes
place inside the Olympic circles.

The user quickly fixes the mistake before calculating the

procedure.

104

CimatronE 10 - NC General

NC Report Enhancements
NC Report in Excel and PDF
The NC report, which provides the shop floor with
important machining information, can now be
produced in PDF and Excel format, in addition to
HTML. The Excel format (2007/2010) can be
viewed in the Microsoft Excel viewer without a
complete Excel license.
Reports are also generated much faster.
Benefits:
Increased flexibility
Faster creation

The report can now be generated in three different

formats: PDF, Excel, and HTML.

105

CimatronE 10 - NC General

NC Report Choose UCS for Motion Limits

The NC report includes motion limits (X/Y/Z Min.
and Max). These help shop floor operators to set
up the stock on the machine.
Users can now choose which UCS should be used
as the basis for the report, ensuring that the shop
floor operator receives relevant and specific details
for the current job.
Benefits:
Fewer mistakes
Improved communication between engineering
and shop floor
More efficient initial setup on the shop floor
Increased user control

In this part, the orange surface will be machined from

above and the green area from the side. Because it
is machined from another orientation, the green
surface toolpath has different motion limits, which are
based on its own separate UCS.

An NC report generated for the toolpath on the green

surface displays motion limits based on the relevant
UCS, both in the toolpath summary and elsewhere in
the report.

106

CimatronE 10 - NC General

User Experience
Logs per Procedure
Users are now able to access logs for any
procedure to receive detailed information on-the
fly.
The procedure log provides programming and
machining information including:
Calculation time (including the start and finish
time of the calculation).
Estimated machining time.
Motion limits (bounding box) based on the
procedure UCS.
Highest Z for XY motions to ensure rapid
motions are safe.
Logs are saved within the ELT file for convenience
and future use.
Benefits:
Easy access to important programming and
machining information.

The log of the above procedure, which is easily

accessed from the Process Manager, provides users
with programming times, estimated machining times,
and motion limits.

107

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Removable R-Flag
The R-Flag warning appears when there has been
a change in the remaining stock before a
procedure. This prompts users to check if the
current procedure has been affected by the change
and if it needs to be recalculated.
Users can now remove the R flag once they have
checked the procedure, without recalculating the
procedure.
Benefits:
Increased user control
Better user experience

Two separate rough procedures have been

calculated in the orange and green areas.

The user changed the downstep of the operation in

the orange area. Because this change affected the
remaining stock, an R Flag has popped up near the
green area procedure. Since the green area
procedure has clearly not been affected, the user can
now remove the R flag.

The manual removal of the R flag is recorded in the

procedures log file.

108

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Process Manager User Interface Enhancements

The Process Manager includes symbols and flags
next to every procedure to allow users to quickly
track their status.
In this version, the symbols and flags have been
reorganized and redesigned to make the Process
Manager more user-friendly.
Benefits:
Better user experience
Easier to determine status of procedures

The reorganized symbols and flags make it easier to

browse through a job to check the status of
procedures.
Every procedure has a large Flag alert which
displays its status (calculated, interrupted, etc).
Additionally, when theres an update or an error,
small symbol alerts appear on either side of the flag.
The symbols and flag above indicate that the
geometry has been modified (g), the calculation
completed successfully (check mark), and the
procedure was selected by criteria (c).

109

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Defining Surfaces as Part or Check

The part/check categories allow users to select
which surfaces will be machined (part surfaces),
and which surfaces will be avoided (check
surfaces) to ensure there are no collisions before
being machined.
Switching surfaces between the Part group and the
Check group is much easier in this version.
The part and check categories can be divided into
subgroups based on their surface offset. In this
version, working with multi-surface offset subgroups of part or check is much easier with a userfriendly color coding system that allows users to
clearly visualize their selections.

Benefits:
Easier to define surfaces as part or check

One shade of green designates the part surfaces,

and one shade of yellow designates the check
surfaces.

Better user experience

In the new version, different shades of green can

designate different part subgroups, and different
shades of yellow can designate different check
subgroups.

110

CimatronE 10 - NC General

Global Filter Keep Last

The Global Filter enables users to view their
procedures more clearly by adjusting the
appearance of different toolpath motions (cutting
motions/air-motions/approach-retract/etc).
In this version the Global Filter keeps the last
settings, which are used for every subsequent new
NC file opened.
Benefits:
Better user experience

In the example above, the user has set different

colors for different toolpath motions. These settings
are automatically adopted by new NC files.

111

NC Strategies

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies

5-Axis Stock
Enhancement to 5-Axis Stock Handle Undercut Stock
CimatronEs automatic 5-Axis Stock enables
efficient 3+2 axis positioning milling, safely
machining all necessary material and eliminating
air cutting.
A new enhancement to the 5-Axis Stock allows the
system to handle undercuts as effectively as it
handles regular position milling.
For example, if material has been removed from
the top of an object, and a user wants to continue
machining from the bottom or any other angle, the
system recognizes material that has already been
removed in the previous operation. This eliminates
over machining and air cutting.

The top image shows the part. Due to its geometry,

the orange surfaces have to be machined from the
left, the purple surfaces have to be machined from
below, and the blue and green surfaces are
machined from the top.

Benefits:
Simple to program safe 3+2 axis positioning
milling with maximum efficiency
Shorter machining time

The middle image shows the stock after the

operations from the left and from below were
performed.

The bottom image shows the rough operation from

the top after completion of the operation from the
side (orange) and from below (purple). The system
identifies the remaining stock, skips the already
machined orange and purple areas, and fully
machines the light blue area.

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies

2.5 Axis Milling

Additional Method of Cutter Compensation
Cutter Compensation allows CNC operators to use
a cutter with a different diameter than the one used
during programming of a 2.5 axis procedure.
There are two different types of inputs for cutter
compensation. The input into the machine can be
the actual cutters dimensions, or it can be the
difference between the actual cutter and the
programmed cutter.
While both types of cutter compensation achieve
the same goal, if shop floor operators have to use
a cutter compensation method theyre not used to,
it could lead to confusion and serious mistakes.

A toolpath for this part has been programmed,

using the white contours as an input. But the NC
programmer, knowing that the tool might be
switched at the last minute at the machine, can
now dictate how this is done, based on shop floor
guidelines.

CimatronE can now handle both types of input, and

NC programmers can decide which type to use,
based on the shop floor preference.
Benefits:
NC programming adapted to shop floor
standards
Prevents mistakes at shop floor level

Option 1: The toolpath as tool tip location (blue)

allows the shop floor to input the difference
between the diameters of the current tool and the
old tool at the machine.

Option 2 (new in CimatronE 10): The toolpath as

geometry (blue) allows the shop floor to simply
input the diameter of the tool they are using.
Note: In most areas the blue toolpath and the
white input contours coincide. However, in the
areas that were too small for the cutter, the
toolpath is different from the input contours to
prevent over machining.

116

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies

Rough Operations
Enhancements to Second Rough Operations
The term Second Rough includes all machining that takes place between the first rough and the finish
operations. In CimatronE 10, enhancements reduce machining times and calculation times of these
roughing operations, while increasing the overall quality of the resulting toolpath.

Minimum Stock Width Enhancement

The Minimum Stock Width parameter is a simple
way to shorten machining time and reduce jumps
during Rough; it permits the tool to automatically
skip areas that can easily be completed during
finish operations.

The first rough operation of this part was done using

a cutter with a large corner radius. This cutter left a
lot of material along the light-blue fillet at the bottom.

In this version, the minimum stock width parameter

results in even shorter machining time, fewer
jumps, and a cleaner toolpath.
The new improvement is most relevant in cases
where a lot of material has to be removed from the
lower layers of a part (see images).
Benefits:
Shorter machining time
Cleaner toolpath with fewer jumps

The image above shows a Second Rough operation

with a stock-width of 0.1 mm done in CimatronE 9. In
addition to the necessary passes along the light-blue
fillet at the bottom, the two vertical fillets were
machined as well.

With the new CimatronE 10 results, it is no longer

necessary to machine the vertical fillets.

117

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies

Improved Toolpath Quality in Second Rough

Users often perform several rough operations in
the same area, using a slightly smaller surface
offset for each operation (e.g., first rough uses a
0.5 mm surface offset, second rough uses a
0.3 mm surface offset).
The system now completely supports these
changes in surface offset even when they are very
small, and it always produces a clean, smooth
toolpath with very few jumps. This also ensures a
uniform remaining stock after each Second Rough
operation.
Benefits:
More predictable results
Better toolpath

In CimatronE 9: This is a second rough operation

with a 0.3 mm surface offset (the first rough had a
0.5 mm surface offset). Because the change in
surface offset is relatively small, the system was
unable to produce a viable toolpath.

The same second rough in CimatronE 10: Note that

there is no under machining, the toolpath is smooth
with no jumps, and the remaining stock is uniform.

118

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies

Optimized Rough
The system allows users to decide whether to use
the high accuracy rough or the faster calculation
rough.
Users can now select the new optimized option to
let the system decide which rough is appropriate
based on the specifics of the current procedure.
Benefits:
Simplifies programming
Optimal calculation times

119

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies

Plunging into Pre-Drilled Holes

The system can now plunge into pre-drilled holes,
even in cases where the previously drilled hole is
almost the same size as the tool.
Benefits:
More predictable behavior

120

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies

Finish Operations
New Finishing Strategy Helical Milling
The new Helical Milling strategy is especially useful
for milling all around steep cavities or cores,
especially in electrodes.
Helical Milling offers considerable surface quality
advantages over Z-layers machining, producing a
continuous toolpath with only one entry and exit
point. Helical Milling thus achieves a shorter
machining time as well.
Benefits:
Higher surface quality
Shorter machining time

The electrode finish is done using the traditional

Z-Layers strategy. The connections between the
closed layers are marked in yellow. These connection
motions (both on-surface, tangential-retract and
approach) might leave marks on the electrode.

This is the same electrode machined with the Helical

strategy. There is only one entry and one exit point
on all the closed layers, resulting in a better surface
quality. In this case, to ensure zero left over material
at the bottom, the user activated the Mill Final Pass
option.

121

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies

Hit Planes
Z-layer machining is often used to machine walls
and other vertical geometry.
During finish operations, if the new Hit Horizontal
Planes option is selected, an extra pass is added
to reach the horizontal planar surface of the part
exactly.
When walls in a part are interrupted by horizontal
planes, this option ensures that the part will be
completely machined in one procedure.
Benefits:
Predictable results
Eliminate the need for additional operations

The top image shows the part. With the new Hit
Horizontal Planes option, the thin orange horizontal
surfaces will be fully machined by the layer-style
finish motions used to machine the walls.
The two images below zoom in on the machined part.

Simplify programming

This first close up image shows the part without the

new option; there is stock left over on the orange flat
surfaces.

The second close up image shows the part with

the new option; the orange horizontal surfaces
are fully machined to the exact Z height of the
horizontal planes.

122

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies

Finish Mixed Optimized

The new Mixed-Optimized option allows users to
machine from top to bottom (the higher surfaces
down to the lower surfaces of a part). This ensures
complete stock removal with no potential tool
breakage due to collisions between the stock and
the tool.
The option is available when using different
strategies for milling horizontal and vertical
surfaces.
The option is useful when there is a lot of stock to
be removed, such as in the first semi-finish
operation.
Benefits:
Safer machining
Increased user control

The Semi-Finish procedure for this part uses different

strategies for horizontal and vertical areas (Finish Mill
by Limit Angle). Previously the system would
automatically mill vertical (white) first and horizontal
(black) second, regardless of height.

The second image shows the Mixed Optimized

machining order. This order guarantees a complete
removal of all the stock above a certain area, before
it is machined.

123

CimatronE 10 - NC Strategies

Finish Trochoidal Appearance Enhancement

Finish Trochoidal is extremely useful for High
Speed Machining and Micro-Milling procedures.
Because of its advanced Zero-Overlap algorithm,
witness marks (which are usually associated with
trochoidal machining) are eliminated and toolpaths
produce a truly smooth surface finish.
NC programmers find the machining technique
more user-friendly, and its cutting trajectory easier
to understand, with new appearance
enhancements (see images).
Benefits:
Improved programming experience

The following part has been machined using finish

trochoidal motions. The images below zoom into the
area in the black square.

In CimatronE 9 (left), the toolpath does not

distinguish between machining motions and air
motions.
In CimatronE 10 (right), users can clearly see where
machining occurs.

Re-Machine Operations
Cleanup User Control Over Horizontal/Vertical Split Angle
During cleanup operations, the use of different
strategies to machine horizontal and vertical areas
can result in a superior surface quality.
A new option provides even more control over
machining: users can specify the split angle that
differentiates horizontal areas from vertical
areas.
This added flexibility allows users to machine
exactly the way they want to.
Benefits:
Increased user control over machining
Better surface quality

This is a CimatronE 9 Cleanup operation; it

combines the all along strategy (blue) in horizontal
areas, and a Z-layers strategy (black) in vertical
areas to machine the orange fillet area.

In CimatronE 10, users can define the splitting

angle. In the bottom picture, the user sets the

splitting angle to 50 degrees. As a result, only the
fillet at the back is recognized as vertical, and the
toolpath is smoother with fewer jumps and better
surface quality.

5-Axis Milling
Improved Tilting Toolpath
The tilting strategy now produces a better surface
quality with smoother motions that protect the tool
and machine.
An upgrade in the internal processes of the
strategy produces more optimal orientation
changes for the tool, leading to a significant
improvement in the quality of machining.
Benefits:
Better surface quality
Longer tool and machine life

The image shows a cleanup operation. A cutter with

a conic shank is used to speed up machining and
improve surface quality.
Generating this toolpath in CimatronE 10 resulted in
a smoother toolpath with minimal vibration and
therefore a much higher surface quality.

5-Axis Swarfing for Ruled Surfaces

This new dedicated procedure allows users to
program swarfing for ruled surfaces (surfaces
defined by a line driven along two curves) in a
simple, straightforward way, and with high quality
results.
Swarfing increases surface smoothness and
shortens machining time by cutting with the side of
the tool (5-axis profiling style), rather than with the
tip. The procedure is used to machine fluid parts
for turbo-engines and aeronautical parts like
integral elements.
The procedure allows users to control the number
of downsteps (slices), as well as semi-finish
passes (layers). It also supports conic tools.

The image shows a conic tool swarfing along the

blade of an impeller with 3 down passes.

Benefits:
Increased surface quality
Shorter machining times
Easier to program

5-Axis Collision Check Mode Smoothing

A new Smoothing parameter available in the
Collision Check mode creates a toolpath with a
smoother trajectory and smoother changes in tilt
angle during machining.
Benefits:
Improved surface quality
Longer tool and machine life

5-Axis Connections (Links)

Several enhancements offer users more flexibility
in choosing the right connections, allowing users to
improve surface quality and protect the tool and
machine during high speed milling.
The enhancements are as follows:
Control of connection feed rate (as percentage
of machining feed rate).
Improvements to the Blend Spline connection,
taking into consideration check surfaces (see
image).
Ability to round rapids, and smooth clearance
movements.
Benefits:
Better surface quality
Longer tool and machine life

In this example, the system has considered the

orange locating pin as a check surface and has also
considered a 5 mm offset around it. The connection
still maintains a blend spline trajectory, but avoids the
locating pin by the defined offset.

Multi-Blade Rough
Multi-Blade Rough provides an easy-to-use
programming environment with the flexibility
necessary to create efficient 5-axis Rough
toolpaths with minimal air cutting.
The Rough operation offers three trajectory
variations shroud, hub, and blend (see images)
so users can easily adapt toolpaths to the material
and specific geometry of the multi-blade part.
Benefits:

The hub trajectory type runs parallel to the floor with

a uniform downstep.

Optimal Rough toolpaths

Fast, easy programming

The shroud trajectory type runs parallel to the stock

with a uniform downstep.

The blend trajectory type takes into account both the

stock and the floor, and usually provides the optimal
roughing toolpath with a variable distance between
layers.

Multi-Blade Finish Walls

The Finish Walls strategy is very easy to program.
The resulting toolpath cuts the walls of an impeller
or blisk in the smoothest possible way for
maximum surface quality.
The Finish Walls strategy simplifies machining of
even the most complex multi-blade parts.
Benefits:
Optimal toolpath for smooth machining
High surface quality
Easy programming

Multi-Blade Finish Floor

This easy-to-use procedure cuts the entire floor of
multi-blade parts, reaching between the blades,
and around the splitter with smooth and safe tool
motions.
To allow users to achieve the highest possible
surface quality for the specific part machined, the
system provides full user control over the rounding
of the toolpath around the splitter (see images).
Benefits:
Easy programming
