CAUSE AND EFFECT

What is meant by cause and effect?


How is it used in history?
Why is it important?

CAUSE AND EFFECT


Identifies chains of events and developments.
Short term and long term.
Identifies, examines and analyses the reasons why events
have occurred and the resulting consequences or outcomes.
Think of cause as the why of history.
Think of effect as the what of history.

FOR EXAMPLE
The League of Nations.
Aim: to punish Germany and ensure future peace.
but did it have the opposite ef fect?!
German defeat in WWI Allies come together to decide on the
terms of German surrender/agree on reparations Treaty of
Versailles.
Short-term ef fects: humiliation of Germany, economic instability,
hyperinflation, high unemployment, unstable government,
persecution of scapegoat groups.
Long term ef fects: Rise of the NSDAP, WWII (as Germany seeks to
reclaim territor y), the Final Solution.
