LIS 703 -- Descriptive Cataloging Exam

Instructions for Completing and Submitting Your Exam - PLEASE READ
CAREFULLY!
For this exam, you will create bibliographic records for five (5) items using RDA and
ISBD. Transcribe the appropriate data and then encode the data with both the fixed
and variable MARC fields that we have covered in this class to date. Templates have
been provided for you to use - please do not substitute a template of your own
creation. You need to transcribe only the data elements that have been covered so
far in this course:

title and statement of responsibility area,

variant titles,
edition statement,
publication area,
physical description area (including the Content, Media, &
Carrier Types),
notes area,
standard numbers (ISBN and LCCN),
fixed fields in MARC.

Please do not transcribe call numbers, subject headings, or access points other than
the ones listed above. Use the information provided for you for each item to create
your records. You will be provided with a title page, title page verso, cover, and/or a
table of contents, as well as further information about each item (such as page
numbers and dimensions).
You are encouraged to consult the course Lessons and Assessments, as well as
resources such as RDA Toolkit and OCLC Bibliographic Formats & Standards website.
If you have any questions about the exam (about the logistics of completing the
exam or if you need clarification on one or more of the items), you must contact the
professor via email. You MAY NOT consult another person about exam content (such
as other students, librarians, etc.) nor may you post questions about the exam in
the Canvas discussion forum or outside email or discussion lists. Any postings made
about the exam in the discussion forum for the duration of the exam period will be
deleted.
Complete the Descriptive Cataloging Exam within this Word document. Put your
name after "Your Name" at the top of this page and change the file name of this
document to: YourLastName_Exam1.doc (e.g., Jane Doe should rename her exam
Doe_Exam1.doc). The file extension can be either .doc or .docx.

p. 2

Upload the completed document to Canvas by 11:55pm CST on the due date noted
within the Weekly Schedule. Please do not wait until the last minute to upload your
exam.
If you have any technical difficulties that prevent you from submitting the
assignment, email it to the professor's outside email address (which can be found in
the course Syllabus). It will not be counted as late as long as the exam is received in
the professor's inbox by 11:55pm CST the day it is due. However, you may do this
only if you are unable to upload it to Canvas.
Use of templates
The templates provided contain the common MARC fields needed to transcribe
bibliographic data. You do not need to use every field for every record. Leave the
MARC field blank if you do not use it. You do not need to delete it. Please feel free to
add fields as needed (e.g., add an additional 246 for multiple variant title fields.)
Replace the x's in the 5xx fields with the appropriate MARC field code (e.g., change
5xx to 504 for a note on the inclusion of a bibliography). The underscores ( _ )
represent the first (1st) and second (2nd) indicators. Replace the underscore with the
appropriate indicator value where needed. The first (1st) indicator in the 245 field is
provided for you, so please do not change it.
Here is an example of a completed template:

Transcribe the appropriate value for each fixed field, even if it is listed as optional on
the OCLC and LC MARC websites. If a fixed field should be blank, then do not put
anything in the white space next to that field. Do not put n/a, an underscore, or an
equivalent value.
Assume that all of the following items on this exam are books written in English
unless otherwise specified.
If there is a table of contents present, you are expected to transcribe it in the
appropriate MARC field. Transcribe a basic contents note. Do not transcribe an
enhanced content note.
Please transcribe all of your answers on this exam using blue font.
