Learning Objective: We will represent proportional relationships with

equations. (G8M4L9b)

Concept Development:

When we read a story, we can create an equation in two variables by setting up a

proportion.
Example: I need 3 cups of sugar to make 2 dozen brownies.
Question-how many cups of sugar (y) will it take me to make x dozen brownies.

! 3
=
! 2

This equation can be represented in a table as well as in a graph.

Guided Practice:
Steps for Representing Proportional Relationships as Equations
1. Read your question carefully and determine your independent variable (x) and
dependent variable (y).
!
2. Create your proportion as a rate that equals ! .
3. Solve for y by multiplying the numerator of each fraction by the denominator of
the other fraction.
4. Complete a table or graph your solution as dictated by the question.

Tessa was building birdhouses with her grandpa. Many neighbors wanted to buy
their birdhouses. If Tessa is able to build 7 birdhouses in 5 hours, how many
birdhouses can she build in any number of hours?

How many birdhouses can she build in 40 hours?

How long will it take her to build 35 birdhouses?

Laynies Produce Stand sells 7 ears of corn for $1.50. Saras Fruits and Veggies sells
13 ears of corn for $2.85. Write two equations (round to the nearest penny), one for
each produce stand that model each relationship. Use the equations to complete the

Closure:
Oscar and Maria each wrote an equation that they felt represented the proportional
relationship between distance in kilometers and distance in miles. One entry in the
table paired 150 kilometers with 93 miles. If k=number of kilometers, and
m=number of miles, who wrote the correct equation that would relate miles to
kilometers and why?

Oscar wrote ! = !. !"# because the rate 1.61/1 represents miles per km.

Maria wrote ! = !. !"# because she said that 0.62 represents miles per km.
