Words from the Chairperson

Leadership cannot be taught, it can only be learnt. In the past 23 years, the Union has been a place where generations of
UYLers learnt about themselves and their very own definitions of leadership. Here, no one teaches us what to think, but
UYLers inspire each other and learn how to think. We are people who develop individuality through impacting each others
lives. This is where young adults with leadership potential start their journeys to become the leader they envision. Through
our experience in the Union, we learn, we grow, and we strive to become more outstanding leaders.
Young people like you and me make up tomorrows society. But even today, we are more than students who merely receive
processed information and filtered knowledge from the rest of the world. The future is in our hands, and everything we do
will have an impact on our community, whatever it may be. Would you be the one to show the world what we teenagers are
capable of? Are you ready to step out of your comfort zone and become the leader you can be? Being part of the Union helps
us develop into unique individuals with insights and prowess. With what we attain here, each of us can become a leader who
brings change to the lives of ourselves and of others.

Delineate your Orbit

Everything in this world starts with a dream, and it is dreamers who have created the world before us. Because of a dream,
we can now fly around the world on airplanes; because of a dream, the slavery system was abolished; because of a dream,
we can now travel all the way to moon. To dare to dream is always the first step, but to be a leader, that is not enough.
What makes a leader stand out from the rest is not just his thoughts, but his choice to stand up and make a move. Actions
speak louder than words, and it is when you dare to take action that you become a leader. A dreamer may not necessarily
become a leader, but a leader must have been a dreamer once. As leaders of tomorrow, we all have what it takes to bring
our community to strive for betterment, but the question is, Do you have the courage to take the step forward?
To delineate your orbit is not merely to sketch without a second thought. It is to know what you are looking for, then set your
path and see it through. It matters not where the path takes you. What matters are the many things you have achieved
walking down the path.
Shoot for the moon. If you miss, you will land among the stars.
Outstanding leaders have their own visions for their community. They know what they want to see in the future, and they are
willing to do what it takes to bring their community to change for the better. To delineate your orbit, you need to know what
you want to see. Dream, hope and imagine the future that you aspire. Then take a step forward and try taking reality a step
closer to what you dream for. It matters not what actions you take, but instead the choice that youve made to do what you
can. You can become outstanding if you take the step and let yourself shine like any outstanding leader does.
This is your chance to seek your chimera. This is the chance for you to Delineate your Orbit.

Look around you, and youll find faces that seem all too familiar, or faces that youve
never seen before. Whichever way, these are the people who will hold your hand in
the months to come. Smile. This is your new family.
A year ago I was sitting right where you are, and back then, I had no idea I would be
where I am today. UYL showed me its magic and made me who I am. Today, it is
your turn to start your journey here. When your journey here ends, I hope you would
be proud to come up and tell me about your story.
I am Katie Alitza Yuen from St. Marys Canossian College.

Welcome aboard. (:

Greetings to you all, Campers :)

Vice-Chairperson
LEE, Beatrix Man Kay
Marymount Secondary School

These words might emerge the moment you stepped into the hall: confused,
a mess, alone, terrified, lost, seeking, frightened, agitated, enthusiastic. Its
perfectly fine, for Im telling you that from now on, the Union will be your family;
the people around you will be your companions, later your soul mates. They
will walk with you, side by side, till the very end of the journey. Cherish every
moment and remember where you came for and why you were here.
Before you answer What do I want to do?, answer Who do I want to be?.
Im Beatrix Lee from Marymount Secondary School, 22 CCC Parti, 23 Camper,
24 vice.
Welcome Home :)

Vice-Chairperson
TING, Donald Ho Tin
Queens College
Hi there:) Do expect to often be asked in the coming year, if not the rest of your life: what do you
think of yourselves? You may not know what this question will mean to you, but as a UYLer who is
embarking upon his third journey here, this question alters my trajectory of life. OUTSTANDING,
the mere answer to the question.
Yet, this is not all about the Union. Its a family. Its enthusiasm. Its a magic.
But you need not know what UYL means to me. Get out of your comfort zone and find what it means
to YOU. Give it all youve got and try your very best so that when the year ends, you are proud to
call this place home and be a 24 Camper.
Just know, wherever you go, you can always come home.

And, with pride,

Im Donald Ting from Queens College, 22CCC Parti, 23 Camper and 24 Vice.

Internal Secretary
CHU, Emily Ka Wei

Hey UYLers!(: What do you think of yourselves?
This little light of mine, Im gonna let it shine.
Every single one of you sitting here is unique with something inside you.
You may not discover it now but try not to underestimate yourself and
just let every piece of you shine throughout your whole life(:
Im Emily Chu from Belilios Public School, 23camper, 24insec ^^
Welcome home(:

External Secretary
MAN, Nicolle Wan Chi
St. Pauls Co-educational College
UYLers say that the Union is home. I cannot deny that.
But it is also something more, something a lot bigger. It is a cultivation of ideas,
a dreamland of inspiration. It is an encounter with so many questions, a chase
for so many answers. It is a sense of security, yet a thrill. It is a place that makes
you feel and think.
Trust me, its hard sometimes.
But its worth it.
I am Nicolle from St. Pauls Co-educational College, 23Camper and 24Exsec.
And yes, welcome home.(:

External Secretary
TAM, Sean Hok Yiu
St. Pauls College

We ask ourselves, who am I to be?

Brilliant? Gorgeous? Talented? Fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
Its never too late to be whoever you want to be.
Starting from today, I want you to feel whats going on around you and dare to try and
explore more.
And I want you to know, that youre here for a reason.
Someone wants you to be here, someone recognises your strengths and potentials, that
you are more than you could ever think.
As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the
same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates the others.
You are OUTSTANDING. Welcome aboard. (:

I remember one year ago, when I had my first day in this place, I was studying other

you all, and all these people around, who may be unfamiliar to you, will be ALWAYS
AROUND.
Campers, I could hardly tell you about what you will get in this place, because this is

do you feel now? Fervent, nervous, excited or perplexed? No matter what your answer is,
please taste it and bear it in mind as it will guide you throughout this year. Now, open your
eyes widely and look around this School Hall, look at those people with youthful smiles
standing and sitting in here. They may be strange or familiar to you, but no matter what
they are the ones who will be part of your upcoming Camper journey, or even your life

Halooooo Campers! Welcome aboard! Here is HKUYL, the destination is unknown,

is one and once you are aboard, there is no emergency exit. Hope you enjoy the
journey~~:)
I am Matthew from Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College, one of the

become an outstanding leader, first you have to be vigorous and courageous enough
to get your foot in the door. Taking the bull by its horns and finally you will have a
rewarding memory.
Just find your prey, take the initiative, and hunt like a wolf. :)

Hello there!
= this right here, is your comfort zone.
All the greatness in life, begins at the very end of this cubicle. If you want something
youve never had, then youve got to do something youve never done.
UYL is home. This sentence will not mean anything to you, unless you take the first
step, and experience everything this place has to offer. Look around you, the unfamiliar
faces will not become your family, unless you go and start up conversations. So what are
you waiting for? Home is only a term, and its waiting for you to give it meaning.

Union becomes my Home, and Im sure, is home for you all too.
Do take my words: cherish every moment in this enchanted place and unearth your

HI!!! Im Jason from WFN. What do you think of HKUYL? For me, HKUYL is much
more than merely five random alphabets, but a journey that will unearth your
potential and equip you to be tomorrows leaders. Now, look at the person who
has just accompanied you while you came into this hall. Say thank you to him/her
as he/she is going to be your companion throughout this year. This journey may
be somewhat arduous and you may get lost through your journey. Yet, even if you
do get lost, dont forget your original intention of being a Camper as well as the
support from your companion. Make no regrets!

Its a struggle. Its having butterflies in your stomach. Im sure we have all come to a
point where we all had to decide.
Is it right to be back in here? Is it the opportunity that I should seize? Am I willing to
sacrifice my time, my sleep, my academic excellence?
Some of you might have made the decision without a second thought. Some of you
might have had long nights thinking it through, bounded by responsibilities, high
expectations, words from others.
No matter if you were the determined ones or the hesitated ones, remember to go
ahead for what you think is right.

Hugh OBrian Youth

World Leadership Congress (HOBY WLC 15)
The Hugh OBrian Youth Leadership World Leadership Congress (HOBY WLC) was a journey of selfexploration and reflection. As we took part in different activities that were dedicated to let us experience
different forms of leadership, we rethought our own lives and visions of the future world.
The best part of HOBY WLC was communicating with Ambassadors from different cultural backgrounds.
Although we had very diverse lifestyles, the one thing that we all had in common, was the will to make our
country and the world a better place. We were given many opportunities to discuss about the problems in
our neighbourhoods and hometowns. By sharing our experiences with one another, we gained insights into
the possible solutions to these problems.
Many people have the preconception that only adults and the authorities can solve these social problems. In
fact, the average teenager is also capable of making changes. I met a group of ambassadors from Taiwan
who launched a campaign that aimed at saving stray dogs; and there was another ambassador from the
USA who organised anti-bullying activities in school. I was impressed by their courage and determination
to make a difference, and I think those are exactly what make one a leader: the will to make an impact, and
to go one step further. When we take the initiative to make changes, we also create an example for others
to follow. As an individual, we may not be much. However, as more and more people follow our examples,
we are capable of changing our community or even our country.
Apart from activities concerning leadership, the heartfelt connection between ambassadors was also
unforgettable. We spent days and nights talking about our strengths, our weaknesses, our life stories and
our dreams. We all shared similar passion about our future. My experience in HOBY WLC has reminded me
of the importance of exploring the world. It was not until meeting so many inspiring people from different
parts of the world, that I realised how big and amazing this world could be. Never give up hope
HOBY WLC is for sure a life-changing experience for me, and I will not be satisfied by just letting it become
part of my memory. I would love to share its positive vibes and passion with people around me. Hopefully
the world may become a tiny bit better because of my effort my effort to make an impact, my effort to live
HOBY.

Annual General Meeting

Year Plan

Global Awareness Project (GAP)

Nov 15

Nov-Feb

Good leaders are always aware of recent world affairs and local issues, and this gives rise to our first
event of the year, the GAP. Aiming at the development of Campers social awareness, the Project
provides the finest platform for Campers to raise their suggestions and ideas towards contemporary
local and global issues. Through workshops, lectures, and debates, Campers can develop their
perspectives on global affairs and local issues, as well as hone their public speaking skills. Also,
Campers critical thinking skills can be nurtured by proposing feasible solutions towards problems
that the world is currently facing.
Throughout the GAP, Campers will be representing Ambassadors from different countries and
investigating domestic problems of the respective countries. The World Congress, which is the
climax of the Project, will then be held in December where the groups of Campers will have to present
their solutions, undergo negotiations and debate with other groups. Ultimately, they can mature into
responsible and visionary leaders who display compassion and commitment towards the community.

Christmas Reunion Dec

Community Ties (CT) Feb
After viewing global issues, Campers are going to materialise the ideas they learnt in the GAP into
local problems, as well as to recognise the sense of urgency to make an impact in the community. The
CTs are organised for them to show their compassion towards the underprivileged and experience
the life of the needy in person. It is a continuation of the GAP, serving the purpose of providing
precious hands-on experience for them to give a helping hand to the underprivileged and raise their
communal cognisance. Campers will be given chances to realise their proposals for helping the
people in need. This ultimately raises the awareness of Campers towards different social issues and
fosters their mindsets to make a change in society.

12

Youth Leadership Seminar (YLS)

Mar-Apr

After the social leadership programmes, the YLS takes place in late March. Shifting focus from social issues
to communication skills, it aims at empowering one another through group activities, in which Campers
realise their strengths and weaknesses.
The Seminar comprises several workshops which provide the opportunity for Campers to collaborate with
their groupmates by solving various tasks, thus strengthening their team-building skills and the bonding
among the groups. The pinnacle of the Seminar is a four-day-three-night Camp. Campers will be entering
a peculiar yet mysterious world where they have to overcome different obstacles and learn about the
qualities that leaders should possess. Through the group leadership-orientated programme, Campers
communication skills can be reinforced and leadership styles shaped.

Camper-cum-Committee Project (CCC)

May-Aug

The last event of the annual programme is the CCC. Campers have to apply what they have learnt in
the previous programmes and coordinate with one another to organise an external programme for nonUYLers. The Project ultimately aims at nurturing Campers leadership skills and spreading inspiration to
the participants of the Project.

Hugh OBrian Youth World Leadership Congress

(HOBY WLC 16)
Jul 23-30
Ten Campers who demonstrate outstanding leadership attributes and potentials throughout the annual
activities will be selected as International Ambassadors to represent Hong Kong at HOBY WLC 2016 in the
upcoming late July in Chicago, IL, USA. The WLC is a once-in-a-lifetime and inspiring programme where
international friendships can be built and Ambassadors scope broadened by learning different cultures and
norms from around the globe.

Annual Dinner cum Closing Ceremony

Aug

As the journey comes to an end, memories will be reminisced at the Annual Dinner. On this special occasion,
Campers will have the chance to recollect their journeys and be joined by alumni and Honorary Advisors,
who will share their perspectives on UYL magic and leadership. With the recollection video, it marks the last
official event of 24th HKUYL. Eventually, a splendid end of the outstanding year is announced by the locked
doors of the banquet.
