InJanuary2015,RohitShettyannouncedaprojectwithShahRukhKhanintheleadwhichwouldbe
theirsecondcollaborationafterthe2013filmChennaiExpress.Shettystatedthathewouldstartfilming

oppositeeachother.HealsosignedactorVarunDhawanwhowasreportedlyplayingKhan'sbrother

Filming
Principalphotographybeganon20March2015withDhawaninGoa.[15][16]KhanandKajolfirstjoined
thecrewforfilminginBulgariafromJune2015.[17]Laterthatmonth,thefirstsongfromthefilmwas
shotonDhawanandKritiSanon,inBulgaria.[18]ThescheduletherewaswrappedupbylateJuly.[19]In
August2015,aromanticsongfeaturingtheleadpairwasshotinIceland.[20]Theentireteamthenleft
forHyderabadinearlySeptembertoshootwhatwastoutedtobethefinalscheduleoffilming.[21]
However,theworkinHyderabadwascompletedbylateOctober,andfilmingofficiallycametoanend
withabriefscheduleinGoa,thesamelocationwhereitwasstarted.[22]InDecember,afterthe
promotionshadcommenced,anothersongwasshotinhaste.Itfeaturedallfourleadactorsandhadtobe
playedsimultaneouslywiththeendcredits.[23]

DilwalewasreleasedintheUnitedArabEmiratesadaybeforeitsworldwidereleaseon18December
2015.Thefilmwasreleasedinaround3100screensinIndia.[24]
ThesatelliterightsofthefilmweresoldtoSonyPicturesNetworksaspartofadealworth220crore
(US$33million),alongwiththenexttwoorthreeRedChilliesEntertainmentproductions.Thevaluation
ofDilwalealonewasapproximately60crore(US$9.0million).[25]
On14December2015,intheUnitedKingdom,thefilmreceiveda12AclassificationfromtheBritish
BoardofFilmClassificationfor"moderateviolence".Thefilm'sUKdistributorchosetoremovethirteen
secondsinordertoobtainthisrating(theexcisedmaterialbeingscenesinvolvingstrongerviolencethan
