STANDARDAUTOMOBILENOMENCLATURE
Forseveralyearstherehasbeenaninsistentdemand
forstandardizationofnamesofcarparts.Uniformity
intheuseofnamesandterminologywouldsavemany
ofthedelayscommoninpartsreplacementservice,
andmakeforclearnessandbrevityintheuseof
automobiletermsgenerally.
Thenomenclaturecontainedinthefollowinglistwas
developedataseriesofmeetingsofengineeringand
servicerepresentativesofseveraloftheleading
automobilemanufacturersofAmerica.Ithasbeen
approvedindetailbytheNomenclatureDivisionof
theStandardsCommittee,andhasbeenpasseduponin
turnbytheStandardCommittee,theCounciland
adoptedbythemembersoftheSocietyofAutomobile
Engineers.
Anattempthasbeenmadetoincludeinthelistthe
moreimportantpartsthroughoutthewholecar,bolts,
studsandthelikebeingindicatedingeneralterms.
Bodypartshavenotbeenincludedgenerallynorparts
ofsomeunitssuchascarbureter,whichvarysomuch
inconstructionastomakeanythinglikeuniform
nomenclatureverydifficult.
Definitionsofdifferenttypesofconstructionhave
beenincludedforseveralunitsinordertoencourage
uniformterminologyindescriptionsappearinginthe
tradepressandincatalogs,aswellasinthe
technicaldiscussionsoftheSociety.Definitionsof
differenttypesofbodiesarealsoincluded,because
itisthoughtthatsomeauthorityshouldtakeaction
tomakepossibletheuseofnameswhichwillbe
understoodgenerally,ratherthanthosewhichare
meaninglessexcepttopersonsconversantwiththe
terminologypeculiartoindividualmanufacturers.It
issurprisinghowmanydistinctlydifferenttypes
ofbodyarebeingsoldunderthename"brougham,"for
instance.
Aschemeofclassificationbasedentirelyon
assembliesisimpracticableforgeneraluse,on
accountofdiversearrangementofelements
ofsocalledconventionalcars.Theclassification
adoptedisthereforebasedlargelyonfunction.

Inmostcasesthenamesdonotneeddefiningto
anyonefamiliarwithautomobileconstruction,
especiallywhenconsideredinconnection
withtheothernamesinthesamegroup.
