Journal #2 of Tutoring
Explain two teaching strategies that you used while tutoring or working with the student(s)
which would promote self-regulated behavior in the student(s).
1. To promote self-regulating a special student would change the names on the board to the
specific learning center that each student would work on that day. That job varied daily.
In the centers the students would read the instructions and do the activity with a partner.
This was all self-regulated. Another way self-regulation was promoted was when a
student was promoting emotional behavior when another student was cheating off his
paper. I talked him through calming himself down by speaking to himself out loud that
its no problem.
Reflection: I was impressed on how the students knew what to do in each center and got out what
they needed when the teacher told them it was time for centers. They found their partners and
went to their designated spot and worked quietly.
Think about the concept sense of self and its implications for teaching and learning.
Review the developmental trends on p. 245 in your textbook. Did you see indications of
sense of self affecting learning of the student(s) with whom you worked? Explain. What
effect did perspective taking have on the teaching and learning environment? Reread p.
255 in your textbook to understand developmental trends. If you observed aggressive
behavior, explain the type of aggressive behavior that you witnessed. See textbook p. 254255 for an explanation.
1. I did see indications of sense of self affecting my students learning when they would
get something write and I would praise them for the specific thing they were really good
at doing. When I did it they would carry more confidence over to the next problem, but
when I didnt they would get discouraged easily when working on the next problem.
2. Perspective taking did play an effect on the teaching and learning environment by making
it easier to understand why certain students acted the way that they did and it also made it
easier to learn how to fix the problem and prevent it from happening again.
3. Lucky for me I didnt experience any aggressive behavior.
Reflection: I was impressed on how well behaved the students were for the most part. I didnt see
any sign of aggression and misbehaving. The students were very well behaved and on task.
Many instructional strategies are summarized on p. 312 of your textbook. Describe two of
the ones you used for tutoring or RTI in your school placement. Be sure that you give a
rationale for the instructional strategies that you selected to use.
1. An instructional strategy that was used consisted of the mastery and review of basic
skills. Homework that was based off of previous material learned at school was used.
This certain instructional strategy was used, because this was a way to review and make
sure the students mastered this particular skill that was being learned.

2. Another instructional strategy used was to acquire effective strategies for interacting and
working with others. Small group inquiry learning was used to help the students interact
well with each other while learning a set skill that was working on being mastered.
Reflection: I was impressed on how many different instructional strategies I found throughout
this tutoring experience. There was a lot I learned from tutoring and watching the students and
teachers.

Final Reflection
In terms of the major concepts presented in this class, how do you think your school
experience and reflections on it has helped prepare you for classroom responsibilities as a
teacher?
1. Ive witnessed several different learning strategies, some ways to enhance the classroom
environment, positive and negative reinforcements, as well as different types of
assessments. My experiences in these classrooms will help me prepare for my own
classroom responsibilities as teacher, because students learn differently and thrive taking
different types of assessments.
Briefly sum the impact that this school experience has had on your professional aspirations.
You will not be penalized for constructive criticism.
1. This school experience was great for me! I came to the conclusion of what grade I want
to teach: 1st Grade. Before I started the current semester, I thought I wanted to teach
Kindergarten, however, when I tutored the 1st grade class I felt as if I was in my element.
It was exactly the curriculum I have seen myself wanting to teach. During the experience
I found things I would like to carry over into my classroom, such as centers, as well as
things I wouldnt like tot carry over into my classroom, such as finding a different was to
teach a certain type of math without using cubes. I enjoyed this assignment.
