Voice Work

Breathing work:
Neutral breathing relax and allow the freeness of the breath,
openness of the throat and natural breathing pattern, this develops
the outbreath.
1 Imagine shoulders, spine and hips widening in turn.
2 Breath out focusing on the abdominal wall, hands below the navel pulling in
and up on the out breath, let in breath take care of itself x4
3 Same abdominal wall breath but 2nd half of breath turn attention to pelvic
floor muscles which are lower and in between legs. X4
4 Hold the breath at the end of each exercise and naturally release tense
muscles rather than pushing out.
5 Put all together
6 Add the 'H' breath to the beginning of the exercise working on the breath
reaching to buttocks, arm pits and widening ribs.
7 Move all of this work against the wall and then away from the wall, if you
are collapsing hold a chair above your head.
Voice Exercises for the diaphram and supported speech from the lower
belly
Panting- hee hee, hor hor, hoh hoh, hoo hoo, ha ha, high high, hey hey
On giggling each phrase: do it focusing on the diaphram, under the navel, back
of waist and above pubic bone.
Now sustain those sounds:

Against a wall, neck and spine long, knees bent, feet hip width apart hand
under navel.

Hee heeeeeeeeeeeeee- try and sustain imagine navel being pulled

inwards and upwards but don't do it subconciously yourself.

Do this for all the different sounds

Then repeat but on the second time reach down even lower for the
support at the pelvic floor

Try this exercise with the diamond points

1 Just below the breast bone wanting to move out
2 Sides of the diamond wanting to move out
Pant silenty 30 seconds
To avoid excessive breath pressure:
-Release the sounds
Hoooooooooor
Haaaaaaaaaaaaah
Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh
Heeeeeeeeeeee
Hoooooooooooooo

When letting the breath out each time imagine the breath flowing from the
belly to the lips which should help widen and lengthen the spine.
To help remove Glottal attack:
-Place your thumb below the breastbone and make some "psh" sounds to engage
it.

Recall the sounds of hoh hoh, har har, hee hee, high high, hey hey, hah hah from
this same place.
Then say the phrases coming from the breastbone

"Hello, how are you?"

" Hi'm fine thanks!"
To ensure sufficient breath pressure:

Standing against a wall hands below the navel.

Slide on a "sh" sound from quiet sh to loud and back down.(all the time
imaging that sh from the belly)
As the sh gets louder focus and imagine the belly being pulled in tighter
and reach down mentally to the pelvic floor for more breath on the 2nd half.

"Hand how are you?"

Flexibility of the soft palette:

"NG" sound brings soft palette and tongue together, and "AH" opens them,
alternate between the two to practise their flexibility. Or "NG" to "EY".

Once you have done this try using this exercise on text by using either ng
to ah or ng to igh or ng to ey and then once flipping to the vowel start
speaking the text straight away.
Giggle and sob for engaging larynx muscles:
-Giggle on the sounds hehehehe or hohohoho

Count from 1 to 10 giggling on each number

The alternate between giggling on each number and speaking each

number trying to replicate the same feeling of openess for both

Try the same exercise on a sob

To remove harsh, breathy closure:

Lie in semi supine hands below the navel.

Sigh out a few times with a sense of boredom, then sigh out on the sound
ho ho ho with the same feeling of boredom.

Repeat with hoh hoh hoh, hor hor hor, hah hah, hah, high high high, hey
hey hey, hee hee hee

Then sigh out saying these phrases:

"Hello, how are you?"
" Hi'm fine thanks!"
"Hand how are you?"
Focusing the sound forward:
Move the face and lips around to relax them and blow out of the lips
Round the lips, imagine a slight yawn in the back of the mouth making space
around the back teeth.
Let out a long 'hoo' sound
Then slide from hoo to oh like this hooo-ohhh-ooo-ohhh-ooor-ohhh-ooo-orrr.
Then try ho-oh-or-ah-igh-ey-oo-oh-or-ah-igh-ey

To enable free and easy movement around the range:

Place your hands below your navel
Lips rounded constantly making a continuous ooeeoooeeeoee sound
Use a slight sob to keep the throat open
Before making any sound blow out the air and take a new breath
Glide down from the top note on a new breath imagining coming from above it
and not reaching for it
Then slide down your pitch range SLOWLY, go especially slowly on any break
areas. Focus the sound forward as you do so to try and prevent any changes in
qualities and registers.
Develop vocal range:
Hands on navel
Making oooeeeeoeee sound again
Imagine your voice as a rollercoaster travelling up and down, you can use your
hand like a roller coaster for a guide.
Car Revs- for supporting range with breath rather than throat tension:
-Hands on navel
-Blow through your lips like a horse
-Make short bursts of sound as if like a car revving up- sound coming from the
belly to the front of the mouth.
-Rev the car on different pitches or a rolled 'r'
