Abstract
Theperformanceofdifferentactivatedcarbonsfortheremovalofnonionicsurfactantsfrom
metallurgicwastewaterwasassessedthroughlabscaleexperiments.Twodifferentmatrices
wereused:asimpleone,obtainedbydissolvingdifferentamountsofasinglenonionicsurfactant
(TritonX100)indistilledwater,andacomplexmatrix,preparedasabovebutusingsurfactants
freewastewaterfromanItalianmetallurgicplantassolvent.Inthiswaythemainoperative
parametersthataffecttheadsorptionprocessinthesimplematrixhavebeenstudiedavoiding
theinterferenceduetothecomplexmatrix:thentheresultswereutilizedtodefineandoptimize
thetestscarriedoutonthecomplexmatrix.Theadsorptionequilibriumexperimentaldatawere
bestfittedwithaLangmuirisotherm,allowingdefiningthecontacttimeandtheproperdesign
parametersfortheadsorptioncolumn.Thedifferenttestswereperformedonfourdifferent
activatedcarbontypes,andtheremovalefficiencyandthetreatmentcycledurationforeachof
thetestedcarbonswerediscussedandcompared.Theexperimentalresultsshowedthatthe
saturationadsorptioncapacityisnotnotablycorrelatedeitherwiththepHvalueorwiththewater
matrix,whereastheslopeoftheisotherm,definedbytheHenryconstant,issensiblyhigherat
strongacidicoralcalineconditions,withaminimumvalueatnearlyneutralpH.Therefore,itwas
concludedthattheremovalefficiencyismaximizedwhentheoperativepHwasinthe24unit
valuerange.Thebestactivatedcarbon,intermsofremovalefficiency,resultedtobeamineral
activatedcarbon,characterizedbythehighestiodinenumber,andthuswiththelargestporosity.
Removalefficiencieswereinthe60to80%range.
