Dear Sirs,
The change of millennia (year 2000) may lead to malfunctioning of various
components and systems incorporating electronic circuits such as timers or calendar
chips, which require correct date information in order to function as intended. In this
connection we are already receiving requests for confirmation that MAN B&W
engines will not be affected by such problems.
The engines themselves have no such parts, but a number of components and
systems installed with the engines contain electronic circuits which might be prone to
failure. These could e.g. be bridge manoeuvring systems, electronic governors,
safety systems, alarm systems, or oil mist detectors.
We have therefore requested our suppliers to confirm that none of the equipment
supplied by them will cause any problems in connection with the millennium change
and, furthermore, we have asked our licensees to ask their sub-suppliers for the
same confirmation. As the normal lifetime of a ship and its main engine is 25-30
years, we have asked the suppliers to consider the implications for equipment
supplied within this time frame.
When the information is at hand, probably in the first half of 1999, we shall inform
you of the outcome of our investigation.
If you have questions concerning specific engines, we ask you to kindly direct them
to the relevant engine builder.
