I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and
what I shall answer when I am reproved.
And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may

WHAT DOES REPROVE MEAN?

THE 1843 CHART REFERRED TO AS A TABLE:

"As early as 1842, the direction given in this prophecy, to write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may
run that readeth it, had suggested to Charles Fitch the preparation of a prophetic chart to illustrate the visions of
Daniel and the Revelation. The publication of this chart was regarded as a fulfillment of the command given by
Habakkuk {GC88 392.1}
As early as 1842 the direction given in this prophecy to "write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run
that readeth it," had suggested to Charles Fitch the preparation of a prophetic chart to illustrate the visions of Daniel
and the Revelation. The publication of this chart was regarded as a fulfillment of the command given by
Habakkuk..."{GC 392.2}
As early as 1842, the Spirit of God had moved upon Charles Fitch to devise the prophetic chart, which was generally
regarded by Adventists as a fulfillment of the command given by the prophet Habakkuk, "to write the vision and make it
plain upon tables[Habakkuk 2:2, 3.] {4SP 241.2}

Loughborough:
It may be of interest to mention by name some of the men who acted a prominent part with Elder Miller and Himes in
the movement of those early times. First to head the list is Charles Fitch, of Cleveland, Ohio, who in 1842 suggested
the idea of having charts to illustrate the visions of Daniel and the Revelation. The origin of the thought was based
upon Habakkuk 2:2, 3{1905 JNL, GSAM 124.2}

Joseph Bates:
In May, 1842, a General Conference was convened in Boston, Mass. At the opening of this meeting, Brn. Charles Fitch
and Apollos Hale, of Haverhill, presented the pictorial prophecies of Daniel and John, which they had painted on
cloth, with the prophetic numbers, showing their fulfillment. Bro. Fitch in explaining from his chart before the
Conference, said, while examining these prophecies, he had thought if he could get out something of the kind as here
presented it would simplify the subject and make it easier for him to present to an audience. Here was more light in
our pathway. These brethren had been doing what the Lord had shown Habbakuk in his vision 2468 years before,
saying, "Write the vision and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an
appointed time." Hab.ii,2. {1868 JB, AJB 262.1}
The preaching was on the great leading doctrines of the second advent. Ministers and people listened with profound
attention, desiring to know if these things were so, and what to do to fit them for that day. The ministers present who
preached were Elders Himes, Litch, Fitch, Hale, Plumer, Cole, and many others. So anxious were the people to hear on
this great subject, that those who could not be accommodated in the big tent, could be seen in the distance
congregated under trees and clumps of trees, listening to selected ministers, explaining from the '43 chart, fastened
to the trees. {1868 JB, AJB 266.1}
"We shall continue to believe what we have constantly taught, [we should like to see how often since the Albany
Conference,] that the 2300 days began about B. C. 457, and must end at a point of time not remote from 1843, as Wm.
Miller first taught. The time is past to which the majority of evidence in our minds pointed for their termination." Advent Herald, Feb. 24. In a few weeks after this, the old chart is drawn out from the rubbish to which it had been
exposed through neglect and uselessness and hung up in a conspicuous place in the meeting for reference again, and
hailed with joy as an old particular friend

JAMES WHITE:
That which was positively true, and acknowledged by the Advent body in 1844, has not become untrue by the passing
of a few years. - We choose to stand on the "original faith{ND JW, PARA 6.3}
In reviewing the past, we shall quote largely from the writings of the leaders in the advent cause, and show that they
once boldly advocated, and published to the world, the same position, relative to the fulfilment of Prophecy in the great
leading advent movements in our past experience, that we now occupy; and that when the advent host were all united
in 1844, they looked upon these movements in the same light in which we now view them, and thus show who have
"LEFT THE ORIGINAL FAITH." {1850 JWe, ADREs 1.5}
It was the united testimony of Second Advent lecturers and papers, when standing on "THE ORIGINAL FAITH," that
the publication of the chart was a fulfillment of Hab.ii,2,3. If the chart was a subject of prophecy, (and those who deny
it leave the original faith,) then it follows that B. C. 457 was the year from which to date the 2300 days. It was necessary
that 1843 should be the first published time in order that "the vision" should "tarry," or that there should be a tarrying
time, in which the virgin band was to slumber and sleep on the great subject of time, just before they were to be
aroused by the Midnight Cry. {December 1850 JWe, ARSH 13.6}
Our minds were directed to that point of time, from the fact that dating the several prophetic periods from those
years in which the best chronologers assign the fulfilment of those events which were to mark their commencement,
they all seemed to terminate that year. This was, however, only apparent. We date the "seven times" or 2520 years,
from the captivity of Manasseh, which is, with great unanimity, placed by chronologers B. C. 677. This date is the only
one we have ever reckoned from, for the commencement of this period; and subtracting B. C. 677 from 2520 years,
there remained but A. D. 1843. We, however, did not observe, that as it would require 677 full years B. C. and 1843 full

years A. D. to complete 2520 years, that it would also oblige us to extend this period as far into A. D. 1844, as it might
have commenced after the beginning of B. C. 677.

THIS CHART WAS DICTATED BY THE HAND OF THE LORD AND INSPIRED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT:
"I have seen that the 1843 chart was directed by the hand of the Lord, and that it should not be altered; that the
figures were as He wanted them; that His hand was over and hid a mistake in some of the figures,.."(EW 74.1)
I saw that the truth should be made plain upon tables, that the earth and the fullness thereof is the Lord's, and that
necessary means should not be spared to make it plain. I saw that the old chart was directed by the Lord, and that not
a figure of it should be altered except by inspiration{SpM 1.3}

ONLY BY INSPIRATION IS THE CHART TO BE ALTERED.

Q: WAS JAMES WHITE AND THE OTHER PIONEERS INSPIRED TO CHANGE THE CHART?
A brother asked, "Sister White, do you think we must understand the truth for ourselves? Why can we not take the
truths that others have gathered together, and believe them because they have investigated the subjects, and then we
shall be free to go on without the taxing of the powers of the mind in the investigation of all these subjects? Do you not
think that these men who have brought out the truth in the past were inspired of God?
I dare not say they were not led of God, for Christ leads into all truth; but when it comes to inspiration in the fullest
sense of the word, I answer, No{CW 33.3-34.1} 1890

Q: FROM WHEN & WHERE DID THE INSPIRATION COME FOR ANOTHER CHART TO BE MADE?
1850 CHART:
I saw that the truth should be made plain upon tables, that the earth and the fullness thereof is the Lord's, and that
necessary means should not be spared to make it plain. I saw that the old chart was directed by the Lord, and that not
a figure of it should be altered except by inspiration{SpM 1.3} 1850/1852

HERE YOU WILL FIND THE INSPIRATION OF A NEW CHART:

"God gave me a very interesting vision, the most of which you will see in the paper. God shewed me the necessity of
getting out a chart. I SAW IT WAS NEEDED and that THE TRUTH MADE PLAIN UPON TABLES WOULD EFFECT MUCH
AND WOULD CAUSE SOULS TO COME TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH." {15MR 210.4} (November 1, 1850)
On our return to BROTHER NICHOLS, the Lord gave me a vision and showed me that the truth must be made plain
upon tables, and it would cause many to decide for the truth by the third angel's message with the two former being
made plain upon tables{5MR 203.1} (November 7, 1850)
My dear Brother and Sister Loveland:
I hope to send you some papers soon. The chart is being executed in Boston. God is in it. {15MR 213.1}
Bro. Nichols has the charge of it.{15MR 213.2} (November 1850)
"I SAW THAT GOD WAS IN THE PUBLISHMENT OF THE CHART BY BROTHER NICHOLS. I SAW THAT THERE WAS A
PROPHECY OF THIS CHART IN THE BIBLE, AND IF THIS CHART IS DESIGNED FOR GOD'S PEOPLE, IF IT IS SUFFICENT FOR
ONE IT IS FOR ANOTHER.{13MR 359.1} (1853)
in other words, if they needed it in Bro. Nichol's time, we surely need it in our time

WHY THE CHARTS?

Remember, the Wise man builds his house upon the Rock(which these messages are compared to) and so when
the Rain falls(the latter Rain), the WISE MAN does not fall, but remains...

which we have been building ever since the message came in 1842, 1843, and 1844. I was in this message, and
ever since I have been standing before the world, true to the light that God has given us. We do not propose

If the 1843 chart is to be replaced by the 1863 chart that came out in 1863, then why is it that in the book
The Great Controversy, the book we are told is to go to the whole world next to the bible, why is it that in that
Book God is pointing the whole world to the 1843 chart in the 1884, 1888, and 1911 Editions?
Are we not counseled to know what is in that book?
When the world reads that book and they come to us for answers, should we not be able to explain to them the
prophecies found on that chart and how those prophecies had a major part in the huge advancement of the 1st
& 2nd Angels Messages?

If the 1843 chart was to be replaced by the 1863 chart, would you please explain to me why Bro. Loughborough,
The man Sister White said is to teach the members and those newly come to the faith regarding the rise and
progress of the 3 messages, why is he in 1913, 50 years after the 1863 chart came out, why is he, when standing
before many people while giving a presentation on the 1st & 2nd angels messages, why is he exhibiting the 1843
chart and not the 1863?
Its because the prophet said in his day(1906) that all the messages that were taught from 1840-1844 are to
be repeated.(See 21MR 437.1

HERE IS THE QUOTE REGARDING LOUGHBOROUGH EXHIBITING THE 1843 CHART:

The morning hour was filled by Elder Loughborough with reminiscences of early experiences connected with
the proclamation of the first and second angels' messages during the great advent movement. As an
introduction to his talk, he exhibited an old logical chart of the visions of Daniel and John, published by Joshua
V. Himes in Boston. This chart, yellowed with age and exposure, awakens many memories in the minds of
those who passed through the early advent movement, AND IS AN INSPIRATION TO ALL WHO ARE STILL
PROCLAIMING PROPHETIC TRUTH.. It arouses feelings similar to those aroused in the hearts of old warriors
before whom is unfurled the banner of their regiment. This is the chart that was regarded by the Adventists

A STATEMENT:
Although there wasnt any error on the 1863 chart, the 1863 chart over time caused many people to go away
from our old paths because the 2nd witness had pretty much been removedand many errors started to come in
more and more.
Why was this so?
Because according to the Prophet, Miller focused on the prophetic periods(plural) that both ended in the
same year and the fact that two, not one, ended in the same year showed the people in Millers day what Miller
was sharing was truth(regarding the time).
You have to have at least 2 or 3 witnesses for any truth to be established(2 Corinthians 13:1).

When the 1863 chart removed the 2nd witness to 1844, all types of attacks on the sanctuary message had come
in. This is why God, through Sister White in The Great Controversy is pointing the world(not only the church) to
that chart. We should all have an understanding of all the messages on that chart.
In March, 1840, William Miller visited Portland, Maine, and gave a course of lectures on the second
coming of Christ. These lectures produced a great sensation
MMR. MILLER TRACED DOWN THE PROPHECIES WITH AN that struck conviction to the hearts of his hearers.
HE DWELT UPON THE PROPHETIC PERIODS, and brought many proofs to strengthen his position.(what was the
result from him dwelling on these prophetic periods?) Then his solemn and powerful appeals and admonitions
to those who were unprepared, held the crowds as if spellbound. {CET 16.1-.2}

WHICH PROPHETIC PERIODS?

I have seen that the 1843 chart was directed by the hand of the Lord, and that it should not be altered; that
the figures were as He wanted them; that His hand was over and hid a mistake in some of the figures, so that
none could see it, until His hand was removed(EW 74.1)
Those faithful, disappointed ones, who could not understand why their Lord did not come, were not left in
darkness. Again they were led to their Bibles to search the prophetic periods. The hand of the Lord was
removed from the figures, and the mistake was explained. They saw that the prophetic periods reached to
1844, and that the same evidence which they had presented to show that the prophetic periods closed in
1843, proved that they would terminate in 1844{EW 236.1}
the prophetic periods extended to 1844(EW 237.1)

PRESERVE OUR WAYMARKS TO PROTECT THE SANCTUARY MESSAGE

At this time many efforts will be made to unsettle our faith in the sanctuary question; but we must not
waver. Not a pin is to be moved from the foundations of our faith. Truth is still truthThe old waymarks must
be preserved, that we lose not our bearings(see 21MR 437.1). {1MR 55.3} 1906

FIRST ANGEL'S MESSAGE REGARDING THE CHART by: James White

"And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on
the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give
glory to him; for the hour of his judgement is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and
the fountains of waters." Rev.14:6,7. This angel's message represents the last mission of mercy to the world; and it
has been fulfilledthe last message to the world was - "Repent for the hour [time] of his judgement is come." Time
was connected with that message, and that time was 1843. God said by the prophet, "Write the vision and make it
plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it." - Hab.2:2. The whole advent host once believed that publishing
the visions of Daniel and John on the chart, from which the swift messengers lectured in 1842 and 1843, was a
fulfillment of this prophecy; and the unbelief of those who doubt now, does not prove that we were all mistaken
then. The passing of the time, and the perpetual backsliding and unbelief of Adventists has not changed this truth of
God into a lie; but it remains truth still. You who participated in this first angel's message, and felt its power and
glory, and saw its effects on the people, just go back with me to the camp-meetings, conferences, and other meetings
where the time, 1843, was proclaimed from the chart. With what solemnity, zeal and holy confidence the servants of
the Lord proclaimed the time. And O, how their words fell upon the people, melting the hardest sinner's heart; for
God was with them, and his Spirit attended the solemn message. The most spiritual and devoted in all the churches
caught the flame and many who had been trained to worship their church and their minister, here learned to "fear
God" alone, and "give glory to him." This message weaned us from this world, and led us to the feet of Jesus, to seek
forgiveness of all our sins, and a free and full salvation through the blood of Christ. Dear Brethren, Was this message
"from heaven or from men?" I know your answer - "from heaven," Amen. We then "tasted of the good word of God,
and the powers of the world to come," and we can not, will not, dare not give it up, and call it a "mistake... {1850 JW,

Fitch's "1843 Chart" Becomes Standard in 1842-1843

Early in 1842 the famous "1843 Chart" was devised by Charles Fitch, assisted by Apollos Hale. It was an attempt to
simplify and unify the prophecies, and to make them easier to present to the public. It thenceforth became the
standard chart, superseding all others, and was a telling factor in the proclamation of the "1843" phase of the
Millerite message. The originals were hand-painted and lettered on two broad sheets of canvas. They were used by
Fitch for the first time in Springfield, Massachusetts, in a course of advent lectures that stirred the city. Employed a
short time later in the East Kingston camp meeting (June 29-July 5, 1842), they were picturesquely described by John
Greenleaf Whittier, who stressed the eager upturned faces of the listeners-for charts always gripped the attention.
These charts, he said, translated those Oriental symbols into stark Yankee realities, and exhibited them "like the
beasts of a traveling menagerie." {1954 LEF, PFF4 733.3}
This improved chart was first used shortly before at the twelfth General Conference at Boston, in May. At the very
outset of the session Fitch had brought it forward for consideration, and the conference was so impressed with it that
they forthwith voted unanimously to have THREE HUNDRED COPIES LITHOGRAPHED. Such is the record of Bates,
chairman of the conference. Joshua Himes, the secretary and man of action, soon had them lithographed and out in
the hands of the advent lecturers. In size they were three feet four inches by four feet seven inches. (Facsimile
reproduction on page 616.) They were publicized in the columns of the Signs, at 2.50 each, and widely used by all
Millerite preachers, thus exerting a marked influenceStrategic dates are scattered over the chart in the upper and
lower right-hand half-677 B.C., the beginning date of the "seven times," or 2520 years; 457 B.C., and the 2300 years to
1843; 508, and the 1290 years to 1798, and the 1335 years to 1843, and 538 and the 1260 years to 1798. Then 1299
and 1449 for the 150 years from 1449 to 1840 for the 391 years. {1954 LEF, PFF4 734.1}
This Fitch chart was a distinct advance over all previous diagrams and charts. The "1843 Chart" corrected certain
former inaccuracies, and omitted a number of untenable positions previously held. IT HAD THE APPROVAL OF THIS
LARGE GENERAL CONFERENCEand, be it noted, with Miller listed as present and participating. IT THEREFORE HAD
THE GROUP APPROVAL OF THE LEADERS. And, published by Himes, it definitely set the pattern in the interpretation of
prophecy for this stage of the movement{1954 LEF, PFF4 734.2}

SCOPE OF THE "1843 CHART."

The "1843 Chart" portrays the following characteristic features:
From top to bottom, at the left, is a vertical column marking the centuries from 700 B.C. to 1800-and ending
with the climactic A.D. "1843."
In the upper left is the four-part metallic image of Daniel 2, signifying Babylonia, Medo-Persia, Grecia, and
Rome, and the modern-nation divisions of the feet and toes, which are named;
the paralleling beasts of Daniel 7, and the ensuing papal Little Horn surmounted by a triple crown;
the Persian ram, the Grecian he-goat, and notable horn of Alexander, in Daniel 8;
the crucifixion of Christ in the "midst" of the seventieth week is indicated;
the pagan Roman dragon of Revelation 12
the papal ten-horned beast of Revelation 13 (the two-horned beast is entirely omitted);
The papal mystery-woman of Revelation 17
three woe angels in the lower left(says left, but should say right) corner;
the fifth and sixth trumpets of Revelation 9
and the various prophetic time periods-the 1260, 1290, 1335, and 2300 year-days, the months, and the "7
times of the Gentiles."
It presented an impressive composite picture, and was the focal point of multiplied thousands of effective

Again and again I have been shown that the past experiences of God's people are not to be counted as dead facts.
We are not to treat the record of these experiences as we would treat a last-year's almanac (5MR 455.2) (1903.)
The record of the experience through which the people of God passed in the early history of our work must be
republished. Many of those who have since come into the truth are ignorant of the way in which the Lord wrought.
