Teaching Internship
Rock Review Lesson
SOL(s):
ES.5

The student will investigate and understand the rock cycle as it relates to the origin and
transformation of rock types and how to identify common rock types based on mineral
composition and textures. Key concepts include
a igneous rocks;
b sedimentary rocks; and
c metamorphic rocks.

Instructional Objectives:

Students will be able to identify and sort igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks by
their appearance.
Students will know the different types of rock found on earth and the sub-classifications
of each.
Students will know key examples of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Students will be able to create the rock cycle based on their past knowledge.

over the warm-up questions.
Then the class will be told that they
will be doing a rock review that day.
The teacher will hand out worksheets
and explain the review.

of the rock cycle. They will do this
by choosing one rock to follow
through the cycle. Students will be
encouraged to use their notes and the
teacher will be available to help.
If not finished at the end of class,
students will need to complete it as
homework. Students will turn the
review in for a classwork grade and
use it to study for their test.

Students will quietly work

on their review using their
notes and ask questions as
needed.

Students will glue or tape
graded work into their
notebooks.

Students will be assessed on their

understanding of rock types and
classification of rocks. The review
will be used as a formative
assessment of their understanding.
Students will also be assessed on
their warm-up.

Differentiated and Accommodation

The activity is differentiated in type of activity; students must recall information, identify and create to
demonstrate their knowledge. Students who need more direction will be assisted individually and those
who require smaller groups or less distraction will be taken into the lab to work on their review. A digital
copy of the worksheet will be provided on Google Classroom for students who have writing difficulties.

2. Draw what type of rock it becomes (volcanic glass extrusive
igneous)
3. Your illustrated story must be in color!
b. Your rock must complete the entire rock cycle. (30 points)
