Technology
Allworksheetswillbeprojectedfrommylaptoptothescreenontheboard.Eachworksheetwill
beshownandexplainedbeforethestudentsbegin.Thiswillallowforthestudentstohaveaclear
understandingoftheirexpectations.Afterexplainingeachworksheet,studentswillhavethe
opportunitytoaskanyclarifyingquestionsbeforebeginningtowork.
Thefigurativelanguagegamewillbecreatedingooglepresentationandpresentedontheboard
forstudentstofollowalongwith.
LyricswillbetakenfromAZLyrics.comandwillbehandedouttothestudentsastheylistento
thesong.
Anonlinecountdowntimerwillalsobeutilizedandpresentedonthefrontoftheboard.Thiswill
beusedwhilestudentsfillinworksheetssotheyhaveaclearvisualofhowmuchtimetheyhave
tofulfilltheirexpectations.

Rationale:
Theintentbehindthislessonistointroducestudentstofigurativelanguage.Ianticipatedthat
studentswouldneedtwoclassperiodstoworkonfigurativelanguage.Thesamesongusedlastclasswill
beutilized,becausestudentswillbefamiliarwiththelyricsandtheme.Atthebeginningofclass,students
willfillinagrammarreviewworksheetasanentranceslipwhileIcheckhomework.Theworksheetwill
bereviewedbeforeandafterstudentsarecomplete.Studentswillthenbegivenafigurativelanguageterm
sheettojogtheirmemoryonfamiliarliterarydevices.Thestudentswillbeaskedtoreviewtheterms

whileIbreakthemupintoteamsforthefigurativelanguagegame.Thegamewillbepresentedonthe
board,andteamswillidentifythefigurativelanguageandliterarydevicebywritingitonawhiteboardin
frontofthem.Afterthegame,thestudentsandI,asaclass,willanalyzesomeofthefigurativelanguage
inAdelessongHello.Amodelwillbedoneforstudentstofillinontheirworksheet,andthenstudents
willbeaskedtofillintheremainderoftheirworksheetduringclasstime.Studentswillworktogetherand
independentlyduringthislesson.

Procedures/Instruction
1. [10minutes]Uponenteringtheclassroom,studentswillbegivenanentranceslipongrammar,
andaskedtotakeouttheirhomework.Oncethebellhasrung,Iwillreviewtheexpectationsof
todaysclass.Iwillthenreviewgrammarruleswiththestudents,anddothefirstthreeproblems
withthemasamodel.Studentswillthenbeaskedtofillintheremainderoftheworksheet.
StudentswillhavetheopportunitytoreceiveahighAbyfillinginthestretchportion,which
wouldbetocreatetheirownsentencesusingthegrammarrulesdiscussed.Iwillcheckhomework
whilestudentsdotheirworksheet.
2. [10minutes]Afterfillinginthegrammarentranceslip,studentswillbegivenafigurative
languagetermsheet.Thetermsheetwillbeontheboard,andasmalldiscussionwillbeheldon
whattypesofliterarydevicesstudentshaveseenbefore.Studentswillbeaskedtoreviewtheterm
sheetbeforeIbreakthemintoteamsfortheirfigurativelanguagegame.
3. [15minutes]Studentswillparticipateinagamethatinstructsforthemtoidentifytheparagraph
withfigurativelanguage,andtothenidentifywhichliterarydevicethatisbeingused.
4. [15minutes]Afterthegame,studentswillbeaskedtoreturntotheiroriginalseats,andtotake
outtheirsonganalysisworksheetwiththeirlyrics.Theywillalsobepromptedtokeeptheir
figurativelanguagetermsheetinfrontofthem,asitwillhelpthemidentifythefigurative
languageinHello.Thelyricstothesongwillthenbeplacedontheboard,andasaclass,we
willidentifysomeofthefigurativelanguageinthesong.Iwillannotatethelyricsontheboard,
andstudentswillbeaskedtoannotatetheirlyricspaper.
5. [30minutes]Studentswillusetheremainderofclasstocompletelyfinishtheirsonganalysis
worksheet,wheretheywillbeaskedtoprovidethreeexamplesoffigurativelanguage.Theywill
havetoexplainhowthelanguageisfigurative,andanalyzehowthatillustratestheoveralltheme
ofthesong.Studentswillhavetheirannotatedlyricsheet,whichwillalreadyhavesome
figurativelanguageidentified.Thisshouldhelptofacilitatethestudentsinaneffectivemanner.
