The skill that I have mastered is linear graphing.

The project that helped me do this is the

cookies project. I did not understand this at first but after fingering it out on the calculator I
realized the mistakes that I had been making.

Another skill that I have vastly improved on is finding patterns in data. I will be taking the
Problem of the Week (POW) to demonstrate this. This is the original problem: The information
from the diagrams on the previous page has been organized into the in-out tables below. Your
task is to extend and analyze this table.
1) Find the largest number of pieces you can get from four cuts and from five cuts. Include those
numbers in your table.
Number of cut

Maximum number of pieces

10

2) a. Try to find a pattern describing what is happening in the table.

b. Use your Pattern to find the largest possible number of pieces from ten cuts.
c. Try to explain why this pattern is occurring
3) Try to find a rule for the in-out table. That is, if you used a variable for the input, how could
you write the out as a formula of that variable?
This problem is asking you to find a pattern for the in-out table and if possible then find a
formula, then use the formula to find the most pieces possible for the ten cuts. The pattern that
I found for this is, the maximum number of pieces from the number of cuts from the one above
it. This is it in a equation: Y+X=Z. To find how many pieces from four: 7+4=11. This is just one
example a skill that I feel I have greatly improved this semester.
