CASE STUDY #14

An enlisted man in the Air Corps had some previous experience as a private pilot. After a
disagreement with his wife, he decided to punish her by committing suicide. Choosing the most
dramatic method he could think of, he took off in a large, unattended aircraft and made several
passes at the local river, each time pulling up before he plunged in. Very soon, all other aircrafts
were diverted to other cities, and the local control tower was concentrating on trying to persuade
him to change his mind. He finally agreed, but then he discovered that although he knew how to
take off, he did not know how to land the unfamiliar plane. After some tense interchanges with
the tower control, however, he managed to get the plane down. When the military police arrived
at the plane, he found himself unable to remember his name or anything about his identity, his
present situation, or the events leading up to it.
CASE STUDY #20
Ruth Langely was 30 years old when she sought help from a therapist after experiencing longstanding fears of contamination. She stated that she became intensely uncomfortable with any
dirt on herself or in her immediate environment. After noticing any dirt, she felt compelled to
carry out elaborate and time-consuming cleaning procedures. This usually involved thoroughly
washing her hands and arms. Moreover, if she found dirt in her apartment, she was compelled
to scrub her apartment methodically, in addition to showering in a very regimented manner. Her
cleaning rituals have severely restricted her life. She now washes her hands at least four or five
times an hour, showers six or seven times a day, and thoroughly cleans her apartment at least
twice a day.

CASE STUDY #39

Don goes through periods when he feels he just cant lose. He goes on gambling sprees,
launches new get-rich-quick schemes, and engages in promiscuous behavior. At other times, he
feels so down that he cant even get out of bed. Life seems purposeless.

Psychological Disorder Project

Case Study #14:
Diagnosis
We believe the enlisted air corps man has at least 2 psychological disorders. We think he
has depression, and multiple personality disorder. First we think he has depression
because the man is willing to kill himself. Next we think he has multiple personality
disorder; because the man is described as dramatic, he then wants to kill himself, then
decides not to kill himself, and lastly forgets his name, identity, his present situation, or
the events that lead up to the scene. This all might describe what we call in psychology
different alters.
Behavioral Therapies
The reasoning for this type of therapy is to help patients change their way of thinking.
This patient severely needs this type of therapy because his thoughts are not helping him
be successful in a positive manner and they will ultimately lead to self destruction. Once
he is successful in this area of therapy, it can help in other ways as well. This type of
therapy will not only clear his mind of negative thinking, but will also improve his mood,
helping him cope with his depression.
Cognitive Therapies
This type of therapy will also help this patient with his depression. Cognitive Therapy is
designed to create positive and reasonable thoughts and actions for a patient. This therapy
will also help this patient learn to not automatically think negative thoughts about
himself, and how to correct those thoughts.
Group Therapies
Group Therapy may help this patient learn that he is not alone in his struggle. Having
multiple people to talk about your problems with can make patients realize that help is
necessary, and could help create healthy bonds with others that are dealing with the same
issues.
Biological Treatments
There are many different Biological Treatments that could help this patient, including
medicine and electroconvulsive therapy. These medicines and methods of treatment could
ultimately mask his illness, but wont necessarily make it go away.

Case Study #20:

Diagnosis
This patient has severe OCD, an anxiety disorder, and a phobia called Mysophobia(fear of
germs, dirt, and contamination). The patient's current life by my observations revolves around
many ritualistic patterns and cycles of by the patient's standards of cleanliness. Rituals, and
patterns can commonly be associated with OCD. Since the patient claims for years to have a fear
of contamination, fear of dirt, and germs this is a phobia called Mysophobia. Lastly, I believe
they have some sort of anxiety disorder due to the fact that the patient is described to feel
intensely uncomfortable with dirt around her and I assume she more than likely freaks out when
she cant wash her hands when dirt is on her.
Behavioral Therapy
This type of therapy can help show that there are consequences to having OCD and acting in
certain situations. For example if the patient keeps having a phobia of dirt and washing her hands
all of the time then she will be unable to do many activities in the future.
Cognitive Therapy
Cognitive therapy may help this patient learn to not obsess over small details. This patient may
learn to think that not everything has to be done more than once in order to get a certain task
complete, and that a perfect life is unattainable.
Group Therapy
Having someone else to relate to is always helpful when it comes to overcoming similar fears.
This may be hard for this patient because of their severe fear of dirt and her intense urge to clean
her hands multiple times a day. This can cause a strain in her friendships and relationships with
others, primarily causing embarrassment, which is why this type of therapy may not be the best
form of treatment for this patient.
Biological Treatments

Biological Treatments are useful to help patients mask their illness, but it wont necessarily make
it go away completely. Change in a patient's behavior is ultimately up to the patient themself, and
medicine is just another form of treatment to help the patient deal with their illness.

Case Study #39:

Diagnosis
I believe that this patient has Depression and Bipolar Disorder.

Behavioral Therapy
This type of therapy helps the patient realize that there are consequences to their actions. So for
example this could help Don realize that if he keeps going on spending sprees and gambling that
he will eventually lose quite possibly his house, family, job, and because he will eventually go
broke.
Cognitive Therapy
This type of therapy will help this patient with them being bipolar.Cognitive therapy will help
improve functioning, prevent relapse, recognizing early warning signs, and will better educate
them about the disorder. This type of therapy can also help the patients depression by building up
a good to over time change how a person sees the world and help to challenge many negative
thoughts the person may have. This type of therapy may help Don from continuing to gamble
over and over again helping him from relapse. It may also help him go on random spending
sprees and help him think more logically in life.
Group Therapy
Group therapies such as family interventions and classes with group sessions could help Don
realize from other people's stories on what to be cautious of and what not to do.
Biological Treatments
For depression the best course for medication would be to take antidepressant. The best route for
this patient would be to take Brintellix that blocks the passing of serotonin, this will help the Don
with his promiscuous behaviour since it is known to have side effects of decreasing the interest
in sex. Also Don should take Aplenzin since it increases the dopamine in a person it will help
Don with his mood changes and will help him be able to actually get out of bed in the morning.
