Lesson  Plan

Math 9: Shape and Space (3-D Objects and 2-D Shapes)
Determine the surface area of composite 3-D objects to solve problems. [C, CN, PS, R, V]

  Intro:
5
• Quickly  review  Symmetry  quizzes  (#6,  10,  11,  13)
mins
• Review  9.8  SURFACE  AREA  REVIEW  WS
• Continue  with  Surface  Area  of  3-‐D  objects

  Lesson:
  • Fill  out  the  following  chart.  Draw  the  shapes/objects  for  students  to  see.

  *𝐻  is  height
  Object   Formula   Example

5
mins
  2(𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎  𝑜𝑓  𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒) + (𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟  𝑜𝑓  𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒)×𝐻
Cylinder   2(𝜋𝑟 ! ) + (2𝜋𝑟)×𝐻

BASE  IS  THE  SHAPE  (CIRCLE)   𝑆𝐴 = 2 𝜋3! + 2𝜋3 2.5
Use  3.14  for  pi   = 2 9𝜋 + 6𝜋 2.5
= 18𝜋 + 15𝜋

= 33𝜋  𝑜𝑟  103.62𝑚𝑚!

15
• Assign  questions  from  Surface-‐Area  Cylinder  WS  to  do  in  class
mins
o All  even  numbers  (4  total)                    [all  questions  are  cylindrical]

10   • Show  students  example  with  10  blocks
mins

10   • Let  students  make  their  own  10  block  shapes  and  find  the  surface  area
mins

After  Lesson:
• Assign  questions  from  Pg.  32  #4-‐7  for  HW/review
• Hand  back  quizzes

Differentiation:
For  students  that  are  struggling:
• Show  students  the  cylinder  paper  fold  out  so  they  can  see  the  different  shapes  and  areas  (two
circles  and  one  large  rectangle).
• Explain  to  students  what  𝜋𝑟 !  really  is  (𝑟 !  a  square  with  side  length  r,  pi  is  how  many  times  that
box  can  fit  into  the  circle)  so  they  can  understand  where  it  comes  from.

Resources  Needed:
• MathLinks  9  Textbook
• Net  for  cylinder

Objectives  of  the  Lesson:
• For  students  to  solve  for  surface  area  of  cylinders
• For  students  to  understand  where  the  formulas  are  derived  from  (not  getting  into  too  much
depth)
• To  promote  problem  solving

Learning Outcomes Targeted for Grade 9

General   Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the
relationships among them.
Specific   Determine the surface area of composite 3-D objects to solve problems.
