Lesson Objectives:
Students will
Gain understanding of the different instruments of the string family
Show the steady beat of my viola playing with spider fingers
Move with the music in an expressive and creative way
Teaching Procedure
Prepare
1. Write the words J.S. Bach, Germany, and Gavotte on the board.
2. Ask students to come sit cross-legged on the carpet and ask students to raise their
hands if they have seen my instrument (viola) before.
3. Ask if anyone has a guess as to what it is.
4. The viola is one of four instruments of the string family; can anyone else name
any other string instruments?
5. Show students pictures of violin, cello, and double bass.
6. Explain that Im going to perform a piece for the class originally written for cello
almost 300 years ago in Germany by composer J.S. Bach.
7. Ask students to repeat Bachs name.
8. Point out Germany on the map.
Present
1. Listen and get ready to tell me one thing that you notice about how I play this
instrument.
2. Can I have one student tell me the thing they noticed?
3. Listen one more time and please keep the beat with your spider fingers on your
thighs.
Practice & Extend
1. This song is a Gavotte, which is an old German dance. Lets create our own dance
to the song! Can I have one volunteer show us a movement that could go along
with the piece?
