Teaching Procedure
Prepare
1. Everyone please sit down on the carpet so you can see the powerpoint slides.
2. Powerpoint slides Review what folk music is
3. Can anyone remember the song that we worked on together 2 weeks ago? Where
was this song from?
4. Turn to the person sitting next to you, and try to remember 1) what the title means
in English and 2) what language the song is sung in.
5. Answer is on the powerpoint.
Present
1. Please stand up so we can review the song together. Keep the beat as I sing the
song for you
2. Sing through the song for students.
3. Depending on their memory of the song, chunk it if necessary.
4. Ask for a volunteer to demonstrate a movement for seaweed.
5. Perform the song with the movement.
6. Work the tempo up gradually so they are able to sing successfully with the
recording.
Practice & Extend
1. Please have a seat on the carpet.
2. We only learned the refrain of the song. This is the section that repeats throughout
the song between different sections.
3. We're going to now listen to other parts of the song to better understand it.
4. First is the introduction, meaning the beginning of the song. I want you to raise
your hand if you can think of one instrument you hear. (Play first 15 seconds of

the recording for students)

5. The song ends with what we call a coda. I'm going to play it and I want you to tell
me if it's similar or different to the introduction. Raise one hand if it's similar, both
hands if it's different. (Play last 15 seconds of song)
6. Right, those sections were pretty similar! Let's take a look at this listening map of
the song. (next powerpoint slide)
7. Notice that the intro section is at the beginning and the coda is at the end. We
know how to sing the refrain, which is the repeated section in the middle of the
song.
Assess & Close
11 Let's review the parts of the song that we talked about. What is the beginning of
the song called? The end? What about the section that repeats throughout? Great
job!
11 Let's perform the refrain of Dulaman while we watch the listening map.
11 As we listen to the song, please stand up during the refrain, which is the part we
are singing! After the refrain, please sit back down. I know, it's going to get crazy
but it will be fun.
