Lesson plan format 2: October 1st pages 38-39

Unit essential questions: Chapter 2: Using Decimals Where are whole numbers and decimal numbers found
around us and how do they affect our daily lives?
Lesson question: What happens when we multiply a number by powers of ten?
Common Core or other appropriate standard: (include the standard number and text)
5.NBT.A.2: Understand the place value system; explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when
multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is
multiplied or divvied by power of 10.
Lesson objective:

Assessment:

Student will be able to justify why equations are true,

false or open statements with 80% accuracy.

Formative; student will be asked to solve three equations

and distinguish if each equation is true, false, or open
and explain why. Student will be able to use calculator
to assist in solving equations.
Formative; student will be asked to complete an activity
that will require the student to solve 10 multiplication
equations and correctly place the appropriate product
on/with the equation.

Student will be able to determine correct multiplication

equations by placing correct answer on equation with
80% accuracy.

IEP goals addressed:

Student will be able to correctly identify which operations need to be used in order to solve correctly one-step/twostep word problems. (80% accuracy in 4 out of 5 trials).
Scaffolds/supports/accommodations provided:

Vocabulary:
Power of ten: a product of multiplying 10 by itself one or more times
There are an infinite number of powers of ten
102= 10X10 = 100
10n=10X10X10X10X10..
Student try: 104 = 10X10X10X10= 10,000
To multiply any number by a power of 10:
Count the number of zeros in the power of 10
Move the decimal point that many places to the right
If the number does not have a decimal point, add one after the last digit
Then move it to the right to multiply by a power of ten
EXAMPLE: 4.34X100
There are two zeros in 100
Move the decimal point two places to the right
o 4.34 4. 3 4 434
EXAMPLE: 645X103
645 X 103 = 645 X 1000
Add a decimal point

In 1000 there are three zeros

Move the decimal point three places to the right
You need to add zeros
o 645. 645 000 645,000
So 645 X 103 = 645,000
Procedure:
Exercise A: Multiply (Even questions)
2. 0.05 X 10
4. 5.36 X 100
6. 0.00276 X 100
8. 18.8 X 10,000
10. 5.02 X 100,000
12. 0.0565 X 1,000
14. 2.2 X 106
16. 0.25 X 100,000
18. 0.0063 X 10,000
20. 162.5 X 1,000
Student will complete activity sheet on multiplication as review from the previous day
Closure:
Remind student what a true, false, open statement is.
For exit ticket student will complete 5 of Exercise B questions (odd)
21. 3.3 X 101=33 TRUE
23. 0.204 X 100 = 2.04 FALSE
25. 60.4 X 100 = N OPEN
27. 0.64 X 10 = 6.4 TRUE
29. N X 103 = 5,140 OPEN
