Negative Treatment of Black People

Though decades past after the segregation was abolished, society's negative
treatment to Black American can still be seen nowadays. It is common knowledge that
Black Americans or African Americans in the past was enslaved and oppressed by
White Americans. In 1700's African Americans were brought from Africa to be sold as
slaves. They were separated from their families and to the things they had grow up
with. Being a slave they were treated like animals. In 1900s some African
American started fighting for their own rights in United States. People like Martin
Luther King Jr., he was a Baptist Minister and the main leader of Civil Right
movements, he was the reason why the racial segregation was ended (Learn About the
United States 23). He made a speech that was titled I Have a Dream", it was about a
dream on having equal right with White American and for their children to have
their freedom. Another well known civil right activist was Rosa Park, she opposed a
white American man when he forced her to stand up. Even now in the present times not
all people in the society give equal treatments between White and African American.
Inequalities between white and black is already ingrained to everyone, so no can ever
erase that because it is a belief that a person grow up with or learn from someone with
influence.

Policemen are the protectors of the people. They should give equal treatment to
anyone either white, asian, or black American. Not all policemen hold the belief that
black Americans should be given a chance to move forward from their past offenses. If
they are once called a criminal that would stay with them until they grow old (Younge
10). Past mistakes of a person either black or white should stay in the past but some
policeman doesn't believe in that, especially if they are black Americans. They think
that a criminal is always a criminal. Policeman who are racist will be giving hard
treatment to black Americans. In the article "Are Minorities Unfairly Targeted?
policemen consider black Americans as offensive to society even they were just driving
in the streets. They can't even walk peacefully down the streets because they got stop
and search by the policeman. Those people who experience the situation will feel
humiliated, embarassed and pissed off because the policeman done it just for the reason
that they are black (Jost 1005). It is in the amendment that people should be equal in all
rights of the law but the policeman didn't uphold this law because of their discriminative
nature to black Americans. There is nothing wrong in being black they are also people
who have rights like any other human being.

Though policeman give unfair treatment to black American, it is not the same
with white American. They are treated with much leniency and fairly than the blacks.
They are the one who does more risks because they know that they are handle with
more tolerance by the society. When a white person do a crime they are not always

punish by the law. In Skolnick's article, he stated that "

Black women were taken or
raped regularly by white men who were rarely, if ever, punished". He did this crime
knowing that the policeman will never believe anything a black person said. Crimes like
this is not always happening but it is still a fact that some people have done this without
a care on whatever happen to their victims. Policeman will thoroughly investigate a
case if it happens with a white American. If the person is rich things like this got
sweep under the rug. It means that it would be cover up by the police or any person
high up, rich people use their connection or influence so that they won't arrest him.
The
police also won't be hasty in apprehending the white if they are seen smoking marijuana
(Young 10). Teenagers, in their stage, they will want to try things that are prohibited for
them. Not only whites have done this but also the African-American, police will likely
arrest them than white even though both races are seen doing this together. Police just
let the white's go instead of arresting them with the black people. Being born as white is
taken as an advantage because they will be treated with more toleration than the blacks.

Black Americans is treated with unfairness not only with the law but also in their
education and in applying for work. Years after the segregation ended, it does not only
apply in housing but also in their education. They have to go to school with white
students and learn under white teachers. In the new school the blacks are seen as
students that can't learn (Nelson 451). For them being in school full with whites that
shows negative attitude at doesn't help them be at ease and be comfortable to learn. The
faculties does not integrate the blacks or openly accept them in their class that's why the

black students is having a hard time to adjust in their new school. Receiving an unjust
treatment and feel that they don't belong in the school, that they are just an outsider
looking inside through a window. So blacks improvement in education is slow and they
are at the bottom because white does not want to help them improve and move forward
in their education. Being a teacher means teaching anyone who wants to learn and
accepting anyone in class whatever race they come from. That's what a good teacher is.
After receiving education black Americans or anyone looks for work to help them
sustain in their daily life. When a black American is once committed in a crime that
mistake will be branded to them for life. It will mean that they will be having a hard time
looking for a job or they can never be accepted or trusted to do a job to anyone because
they are already labeled as a felon. In an article Price of Transgression, even when a
black American doesnt have a criminal record they will still have a hard time looking for
a job like the white American who just got out from prison. Also when a Black-American
or anyone from a minority has a job they receive subtle prejudice from a co-worker in
their work now a days (Offerman et al). Their way of prejudice is their use of tone or
action that is not blatant to the person they are talking about can affect their health and
their work. Black American doesnt have any difference with white, except skin color,
they are just human being who have the rights like everyone in the U.S.
While the white American receive the opposite treatment than the black in their
education and in work. For the teachers they are smart and they learn fast with whatever
they are being taught. For the reason that their learning from white teachers, they have
an advantage to learn because their teachers are more open with them than the black.

They are not treated with racial bias like the blacks that are given negative evaluation
by the faculties ( Neslson 453). A school at St. Louis the black students are cheated by
taking the IQ tests, when a students receive a grade under 80 they are put in retarded
student (Nelson 454). They are taught by the teachers with a limited subjects that limits
their learning in the other subjects. While white Americans are never cheated by the
administrators and faculties on their IQ tests. They are not divided in classes like the
blacks. They are given the white privilege that is known to everyone.
They are not

divided in classes like the blacks. They are given the white privilege that is known to
everyone. White privilege is an advantage of their social status and having more freedom
in work, in their speech, and to do anything what they want. While in working area,
white have more advantage to be accepted in a job (Younge 10). Especially a rich white
American, they can work anywhere because of their connection and influence to certain
people that can help them get the work. Even though a person who made a transgression
when they are young can still have a job unlike the black people. Example was former
Pres. Bush he was reckless when he was young but still he became a president. It was an
example of a rich white male having his white privilege. The difference between white
and black is bigger than what everyone thinks nowadays. The advantages of white in
being chosen in a job never die down, the stigma that whites are better than other races
will never die down.
Although the racism is still going on, it doesnt really matter because as time
changes, the acceptance of Black-American fully is slowly being adapted by the people.
It started when the constitution was enacted, in article IV section 2 it stated that all

Mosqueda 6

citizens of the state either white or black or immigrant have all equal privilege and
immunities. Even though the black have equal right with the black it was not given to
them by the whites. They were still treated as below them and a segregation act was
enacted. Segregation act was a law that blacks have to separate from white from
anything they do like going to a beach. In the novel Southland, Frank and his friends
went to the beach to have fun but when they arrived there they saw a sign Whites Only
and Colored Only, this showed that the segregation is acted by the people especially
the white (Revoyr 97). It was after the Civil Rights movement that blacks were given
more privilege though not like the whites, but still a right to talk with white people. It
was people like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks was the reason that blacks gain
their rights back. In the present time, black and white people have the chance not only
to vote but also to run for office. Having a president that is black shows that they have
the ability to lead and to help the people accept that black American can be a leader and
helper to the citizens. It shows that they are not inferior or below the whites.
People from any races are all human being they have the same rights or freedom.
They shouldnt be treated differently because of their skin color or facial features.
Though racism will never go away, those white American will one day accept the black
people and see that they are no different from each other. A day will come that they will
be treated equally in work, in their education, or to people who holds the law in their
hands.
