We are going to learn about communities other than our own!
Who can tell me about a community they know of?
There are people all over the world that are a part of different
communities.
First I want to read you a story! (Raven)
What did we notice about the book? Anything different than what we
usually see?
Did anyone notice the artwork? How the book was drawn?
Its done in a style (who can tell me what style is?) thats very popular
to the Northwest Pacific Coast aboriginals.
Has anyone heard about this community?
Show a map of where they are located
Talk about the northwest pacific coast aboriginals. And why totem
poles are so important to them. What do the animals represent?
Once finished with discussion I will then explain what I would like
them to do! They will create their own totem pole and the animals on
the totem pole need to represent important things in their lives. Like
their mom, dad, sister

Then they will write on a different piece of paper the animal they
choice and what it represents!

Body of Lesson
(20min.)

Students will work on their Totem Poles- they must draw and color it
the very best that they can
Their explanation of why they choice the animal they did to represent
the important part of their lives.

Closure (15 min.)

We will have a group discussion about what they learned from todays
lesson and then they will have the chance to share what they drew

Sponge Activity

If they are complete they will finish any social work that is not
completed. If they are finished all of it they can work on their
Christmas books
