Competency 007: The teacher understands and applies principles

and strategies for communicating effectively in varied teaching and

learning contexts.
Teachers need to be able to adjust their teaching methods to fit the learning
styles of their students. Not all students learn the same way and some have
different learning styles for different subject. For example, when I am working on
anything that has to do with math or numbers I have to draw the problem out and
get a visual of what do to whereas when it comes to history I can usually retain
the information when it is spoken or I read it.

Competency 008: The teacher provides appropriate instruction that

actively engages students in the learning process.
Teachers are able to keep the students focused on the lesson at hand. Involving the
students in discussions or educational games keeps them actively engaged in the
classroom. This can also include, but not be limited by having students work
problem out on the board and asking for help if they do not
understand.

Competency 011: The teacher understands the importance of

family involvement in childrens education and knows how to
interact and communicate effectively with parents.
Parents can be a teachers best friend. Every parent wants what is best for their
child and having teachers who clearly want the same thing is important. Being
able to communicate with parents goes a long way in the progress of the
student. There is only so much time during the school day that a teacher can
work with the children that parents need to be informed on what is being taught
and if extra help should be sought out.

Competency 012: The teacher enhances professional knowledge and

skills by effectively interacting with other members of the
professional community and participating in various types of
professional activities.
Teachers should also be lifelong students. There is always a new method or game
to learn that will increase the progress made by students. Doing things just because
thats the way theyve always been done can get old and boring. By asking other
educators how they do things you can bring more fun and excitement to the
classroom.

Competency 013: The teacher understands and adheres to legal and

ethical requirements for educators and is knowledgeable of the
structure of education in Texas.
Knowledge of the law is always beneficial. In a professional setting the excuse of I
didnt know is not valid. As an educator you are expected to know what is and is
not permissible. You also need to know your rights should any situation regarding
your reputation arise.
