Scene 1:

J: Hi Im Jared. This is Mikey. This is Spencer. And this is Ryan. And we

are concerned about the Big Trees park.
R: With the rise of global warming and El Nino on the horizon, it is more
important than ever to stop erosion from destroying this precious and
delicate ecosystem forever.
S: As you can see here, erosion and the creation of trails has removed
much of topsoil, which can remove precious nutrients for the plants, killing
them and causing a ripple through the trophic levels.
M: The lower levels of soil are not prepared to handle water, turning a
small wave of erosion into a tsunami.
J: We cannot afford to let this problem go unsolved, so we have come here
to Find A Solution.
R: We have come up with a variety of creative solutions to save Big Trees
from erosion.
S: The first of these solutions would be to place brush mats around the
area. This provides a protective covering of vegetation to a slope to stop
the material from being eroded away.
M: The next solution is to plant more native plants, such as Cypselea
humifusa, Vinca major, Lythrum tribracteatum, or Conium maculatus. This
will help to strengthen the topsoil so it wont be so susceptible to
weathering and erosion.
J: Our last solution for erosion is to reduce the amount of runoff at Big
Trees. The runoff removes the topsoil, which is what plants need to grow
and prosper.
R: Several years ago, a team of Boy Scouts filled in some of the ruts in the
side of the hill at Big Trees, causing the water to evenly divert all over the
hill. When the water is all focused into the few ruts in the hill, it quickly
erodes the topsoil. We would reinforce their efforts by refilling the ruts,
S: As we have explained, Big Trees is in grave danger. But,we as a
community can stop this threat. With brush mats, native plants, and refilling
the ruts, we can make this a solution and save Big Trees. Thanks for
watching.
