mechanicalenergy.Themotorinthisactivityworksasfollows:
Theelectricityfromthebatteriesflowsthroughthecoilofwirecreatingan
electromagnetandthusamagneticfield.Thisonlyhappenswhenthecoilisina
positionwheretheexposedcoppertouchesthecopperwiresupports.Themagnetic
fieldfromtheelectromagnetisattractedtoorrepelledfromthepermanentmagnets
sittingonthedesk.Thisspinsthecoiltoalignthetwomagneticfields.Thisiswhere
thepropersandingofthecoilscomesintoplay.Asthemagneticfieldsaredrawninto
alignment,thecoilmovesintoapositionsuchthatthecoppersupportwiresarenow
touchingtheinsulatedsideofthecoil,thusturningofftheelectromagnet.Sincethecoil
hasmomentum,itcontinuestospinpastthealignedpositionandbackintotheposition
wherecoppertouchescopperandthepermanentmagnetcandrawthecoilbackdown.
Thiscyclecontinuescreatingarapidspinningmotion!Ifwehadsandedtheentirewire
endsofourcoil,themomentitsawelectricityitwouldsimplymoveintoalignment
withthemagnetonthedeskandstaythere!Bysandingonehalfofthewire(and
specificallythewaywedidit)wecreatethiscycleoffirstmagneticattractionandthen
momentumtogetthecoiltospin.
