Learning Activity Plan for Infants and Toddlers

Yael Jacobs
Toddler Lesson Plan
Sink or Float Experiment
Brief Description of the lesson This weeks perasha, Perashat
Noah, focuses on Noah and his ark. Noah had to save his
people and animals from a flood, and the only way to escape
the flood was to float. This weeks lesson will be a scientific
experiment and children will learn which classroom items will
float like Noahs Ark and which will sink .
Developmental Focus The domains of development that will be
targeted in this experiment are cognitive, social, and physical
(fine motor skills).

Objective(s) Children will demonstrate knowledge that objects

which are dense will sink in water and objects which are
buoyant will float in water.

Connection to Standards (if applicable) (Be sure to specify

which set of standards you are working with to construct your
learning activity)
Relevance/Rationale Constructing the story of Noah, we
emphasize the hard work that Noah put into constructing his
Teba, or boat and how in order for him and his family to
survive, they needed to find a way out of the flood, and the
only way to do that was to float. In this experiment, the
children will learn physical properties of objects, specifically
which objects will always sink (like a rock), and which will
always float (like a boat).

Time Needed
15-20 minutes
Instructional Context
This will be a small group activity.

Learning Activity Plan for Infants and Toddlers

Procedure Children will be placed into small groups of four to

five children. Each group will get a small glass beaker filled
with water and an assortment of objects. Each student will
then pick out one object from the assortment and describe
what the object is and some physical properties of the object.
Children are then asked if the object will sink or float in the
water. Then, each student will place their object in the water
and the children will observe and state whether the object
sank or floated in the water.

Resources/Materials Needed
Glass beaker, water, paper clip, wooden block, Plastic bag,
rock, any kind of fruit

Room modifications tables should be separated sparsely

throughout the room as to separate the groups.

Plan for differentiated instruction/Instructional modifications

children will be provided with prompting and assistance from
teacher if necessary

Method of assessing childrens growth and learning

Children will be called up during learning circle, shown
pictures of objects and place a picture on either the sink
side or the float of the felt board.
Follow-up/Extension Activities Students will be shown a variety
of toys such as rubber duck, a baseball, a piece of aluminum
foil and will be asked whether each object will sink or float.
(whole group activity). Both objects that sink and objects that
float will both be placed in the water table for the duration of
the week.
