Cold Is Mad, As Hot Is Sad

Darren Kagey

Once upon a time, there was an expansive mountain range in

Greece. In this mountain range, there was a mountain named Mount
Olympus. On Mount Olympus, gods lived there such as Hades, Zeus,
Poseidon, Athena, and Demeter.
One day on Mount Olympus, Demeter was showing Hercules
the beautiful plants she was growing. They were having a lot of fun,
when all of a sudden, Hades popped up and struck them both with a
hammer, kerplunk!. The shot was as hard as a rock. Right after Hades
hit Demeter and Hercules, he grabbed both of them and took them to

the underworld. By the next day, everybody heard what had happened
and became scared. This fear made Hades very cocky. Im more
powerful than Poseidon, he proclaimed. You know what, Im as
powerful as can be.
When Poseidon heard this claim, he found his brother. You are
not more powerful than me, Poseidon stated. For it is known that Im
the second most powerful god behind Zeus.
Well, then prove it, Hades responded.
And that is exactly what he did. Poseidon pulled out his trident
and Hades grabbed his staff. They were ready to have a brutal, bloody
battle, but just as the battle was beginning, the whole ground turned
white. What could have possibly
happened?
Hades and Poseidon were
baffled, for they didnt know what to do. Do you know whats going
on? asked Hades.
No, do you? replied Poseidon.

No, what should we do? wondered Hades.

We should go ask Zeus if he knows, Poseidon said.
Yeah, maybe hell know, agreed Hades.
When Hades and Poseidon found Zeus, he was just as confused
as them.do you know whats going on? asked Poseidon
No idea, Zeus replied. But you know who might?
Who? said Hades and Poseidon simultaneously.
Athena, Zeus claimed. Shes the goddess of wisdom.
Both Hades and Poseidon agreed, so the three brothers went to
get her. When they got to her, she was sitting in the white stuff. Zeus
approached her. Athena, you are the goddess of wisdom. Surely, you
know whats going on, Zeus said.
Nope, replied Athena.
Do you know anything, asked Zeus.
Yes, I know how to figure out whats going on, said Athena
What? asked Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades.

We need to learn three things, Athena claimed. What is

it? Where did it come from? And, how do we get rid of it?
Brilliant, Poseidon concurred.
Yes, Athena agreed. Now lets get going.
So, Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, and Athena started with figuring out
what the white material was. Zeus noticed that the white material was
very cold, which was noted. Hades, who was feeling the material,
realized that it was soft and liquidy. The last observation made was by
Poseidon. He saw that the substance, when piled together, compacted.
Athena collected all this information and inferred that the material
was natural.
Now they needed to figure out where it came from. Finding this
out was a challenge. The material showed up out of nowhere and was
white. Even though they were struggling, Zeus believed that only a
person more powerful than him would know, and that person was his
father, Cronus.
Zeus, Athena, Poseidon and Hades went to speak to Chronus.

Father, do you know where this material came from? asked

Zeus.
All I can tell you is, cold is mad, as hot is happy, Cronus
replied.
Um, okay? Thank you for your help, said Zeus.
As they left, Zeus asked, What could that mean?
I think I might know, Athena replied.
Then tell us, Hades said annoyed.
I think it means that for some reason that we dont know,
Cronus became upset and covered the land in this material,
Athena responded. Do any of you know a reason why he might be
upset?
Well, earlier today, Hades and I got into an argument
because he said he was more powerful than me, Poseidon said.
Which I am coughed Hades.
Whatever, replied Poseidon. But anyways, we were about
to fight, and right as we started, the material came down.

Thats odd, Zeus claimed.

Shush, I think Ive figured it out, Athena announced. You
three brothers bicker a lot, and your father got tired of it. So as
punishment, he placed the material on this land. Athena stated.
Yeah that makes since, but how will that help us get rid of
it? Hades questioned.
Make peace, said Athena. If you three try to get along, it
will

make Mount Olympus more peaceful, which

makes your father happy.
So you're saying that if we stop fighting

and make Mount Olympus more peaceful, our father will rid the
material? Zeus asked.
Yes, but I dont know how long it will take, Athena replied.
But it will work.
So for the next decade, Poseidon, Hades, and Zeus never
fought with each other. Because of this, Mount Olympus was
much more peaceful. The mountain was as calm as a pond on a

beautiful summer evening. Eventually, Cronus took the material

away. The city rejoiced.
Even though the material was taken away, we still have to
deal with it every winter in real life, when it snows. Now days,
though, cold isnt always mad.

Theme: Arguing and fighting dont make things better, they
